Quick question i was having a discussion with some relatives about Masters Degrees. i for one am kinda against it, especially for it to just be equalivant to what a Bachelor's degree was a worth a few years back, ( today's requirement for an average corporate america job). if any i advocate Petroluem Engineering simply because its a STABLE Career with desk jobs paying GREAT and only having to do 2-3yrs tops of school. IMO. EXCLUDING MED/Pharm/Dent/Opt/etc what are the better more WORTHWHILE Masters degrees worth chasing after. thanks

My sister is goin for PA (physicians assistant) Its like one of the best career outlooks for 2012. That's a Masters.

I'm also curious. I'm looking into B schools right now and was wondering if you guys think getting an MBA is better than getting a MS for accounting or finance. Im doing research but nothings better than the advice of someone whos been there before

Im getting my MS in finance right now.  It's a one year program and I'll be done in May. I still don't have a job lined up tho...

Im trying to get into the options trading industry. Couple interviews coming up soon.  In all honestly, I would never tell anyone this program has changed me or really helped me out a ton.  Just looks great on my resume, but its pretty damn expensive.  Then again, I'm sitting in class right now on NT, so maybe its my attention span that's the real problem...

none of this for the sake of this thread's integrity. PA aint to bad but you are bound to work underneath someone forever. you really cant do private practice as a PA (as in own the private practice since they SUPPLEMENT doctors.)
Anyone do Petro. Engineering????

my kid brothers GF is doing the same thing.  I hope she is unscrupulous and is willing to write me scripts for painkillers and stuff.  Dont really want to ask her to do it until my brother wifes her up, cause then shes family.

even if she does the hardest part is finding a pharmacy to fill the script. its an uphill battle for OXY. TRUST ME.

Same thing here.
I want to go to Vandy so bad to get my MBA but they don't have Information Systems. So I was thinking maybe get it in Management. No idea how well those two will play together, get my Bachelors in MIS and a MBA in business management.
What do you guys think?

hahaha damn.... you sound like you know what youre talkin bout.

is it cause the pharmacy will call and doublecheck with the prescribing doctor, not just the PA? or is it a matter of pharmacies even carrying it and filling it?

not that its quite on the level of oxy abuse, but when I got a script from a PA for some percocet's, and it didnt seem like they went through any sort of extra precautionary measures before they filled it.

sorry OP.  thread derail.

I'm getting a master's in engineering and I'll probably try to get an MBA once I'm working. Hopefully by then I'll be unstoppable.

Got my bachelors in Chemical Engineering, currently working for a top oil company. Gonna go back and get my MBA, probably part time, since my company pays for a good portion of the tuition. I'm only applying to top tier programs (Booth, Kellogg, etc) so that I get the best return on investment. Engineering undergrad + top tier MBA = unstoppable.

To OP, I know quite a few petroleum engineers, and it is a very stable degree. Just understand that your career options will be fairly limited(which isn't necessarily a bad thing). Also understand that for most reputable programs, you'll have already taken to have Calc 1-3, Diff Equations, Statics, Thermo etc to be considered.

Well, maybe I can say *in before some NT'er who makes half decent money comes in and tells us school isn't worth it*

It depends. If you want to be married to the rat race, Booth/HBS/Kellog/Wharton MBA is probably the way to go. I've seen some kids get into banking after mediocre undergrads then MS in accounting/finance. That's not necessarily stable, but the pay can be pretty good.

Well like everyone else I was thinking about an MBA, but as of late I'm thinking about getting my Masters in Information Systems. Any thoughts on MIS?

Do what you want. Don't do it for what's the career that's hiring now. Because at some point it will get back to normalcy.

I'm applying for my Master's in Education because all I want to do is teach.

But my advice is when you say a Master's degree is worth what a Bachelor's was a half decade ago. That means your bachelor's is effectively an associate's degree, and associate's degree is basically a high school diploma. So it's best to do it now and get it over with, and get yourself into the field you want before you end up waiting 15 years trying to get your master's when everyone is getting their Doctorate. If that happens

(and that's for me as well). I can't even imagine if one day it is Doctorate or Bust.

I have a lot of engineering friends and they say the same thing.

good on you guys trying to better your futures

I plan on getting an MS in biodiversity conservation. just a stepping stone to a PhD as I wanna do research. making $$$ is cool but I think this is where my passion lies
