The Detroit Lions have fired offensive coordinator Mike Martz and promoted offensive line coach Jim Colleto and wide receivers coach Kippy Brown to run the offense in his place, a source in the organization told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Colleto will be named offensive coordinator and remain as the offensive line coach, while Brown is being promoted to assistant head coach and passing game coordinator, and will also serve as running backs coach.

In other changes, the Lions promoted Shawn Jefferson from offensive assistant to wide receivers coach and fired Martz's son, Tim Martz, as an offensive assistant.

On Sunday, after their season ended with a loss to the Green Bay Packers, members of the Lions offense said the blame should be on them.

"You can keep changing coaches, but every time you change them that's a new system,'' said quarterback Jon Kitna. "The reality is, the games that we lost, the majority, the times that things didn't go right, it was self-inflicted stuff.

"It wasn't a coaching thing where you were outcoached or they weren't putting you in a position to be successful. There were plays to be made, and we didn't make them for whatever reason that is.''

However, Martz is not expected to be out of work for long. According to media reports, the San Francisco 49ers will seek him out as a replacement for current offensive coordinator Jim Hostler.

Martz led the St. Louis Rams to the playoffs in four of his five full seasons as a head coach, including a Super Bowl after the 2001 season, and helped the franchise win the 2000 Super Bowl as offensive coordinator. The Rams went 51-29 in the regular season and 54-33 overall during his five full seasons as coach.

What a joke of an organization....

Did they even take the time to look at any other candidates..... IMO this was a good firing, but a bad hiring...

. As fot Martz, this dude's plays confuse me at times.. Why not run the clock out instead of passing with lead?
laugh.gif
. Nonetheless, he'll end up in SF

Mike Martz is an offensive genius who has to be reined in. Coach Rod prolly didnt understand that.
**** Vermeil used to have to throw the headphones on and overrule plays but THATS what a head coach is supposed to do.

and

@ the Lions for even tryign to make it look like Martz was the root ofthe problem.

It's funny how people forget how potent the Lions offense was for about 5-6 games to start the year...now it's all on Martz? C'mon....what are theygoing to do about the loud-mouthed bum behind center who had consistency problems and struggled with his reads? Is that on Martz as well? If Norv Turner cankeep gettin OC jobs/head coaching gigs, then Martz will definatley not be out of work for long. He has a GREAT offensive mind, and I think the Lions are takinga step or two back due to dismissing Martz. At least give the man another year.....SMH

This firing doesnt make sense to me. If I had 2beast WR I would throw it all the time too, but at the same time you have to establish the run and manage that clock with a lead

Not a fan of the firing, although I am still puzzled why Martz would run 4 rushing plays in some games. It's like as soon as they started losing, theyabandoned the run completely.

Haha I had similar thoughts. When I first saw that he was fired, I was like "Come to College Station Mike Martz!!!!" That's very very verywishful thinking though. No way he would choose Texas A&M over some of the other gigs he'll get offered, and I doubt A&M is even giving any thoughtto trying to pursue him.

Funny i could have sworn it said their Oline coach was promoted to take his spot, that cannot be possible after the performance of that group this season.

Lions had a good offensive coordinator, although they didn't get along much.... I could live with the firing, like I said above, but the hiring is just laughable .... The Lions already are the worst defensive team in the league, I wonder what the offense will be like now...
laugh.gif
I alsoheard Shaun Rogers is leaving Detroit...... man I feel bad for Lions fans

I don't know man. I look at teams that turn it around, like the Browns this year, and they actually make intelligent football decisions. Not us of course.I can understand the firing of Martz. I liked him and would have rather kept him. But how in the HELL do you promote our offense line coach? WE HAVE THE WORSTOFFENSIVE LINE IN THE LEAGUE. It makes absolutely no sense at all. I really am thinking about trying to get a job with the organization. I mean where else canyou consistently do stupid things and make bad decisions and get promoted? Only in Detroit.
