The best part is, this guy is doing it somewhat quietly.

I think soon enough, Seattle will get their Sonics back. They need an NHL team up there as well.

Great Seattle Times chat with Chris Hansen today. Some tid-bits definitely worth noting:

1. He mentioned the possibility of purchasing back OKC’s share of the Sonics’ franchise history from Clay Bennett.

2. The whole plan is to build a smaller, Seattle version of LA Live (no hotels though).

3. Speaking with current owners, execs, the league, etc. everyone seems to want a team in Seattle.

4. Gave an under-promise/over-deliver opening date for opening a new arena in 2017...so interpret that as you will.

Nordstrom is of course in favor of it. I worked at the flagship for awhile. Any time there was a baseball or football game (including Husky football), the visiting fans all stayed downtown. Football Sundays, and when big time MLB teams were in town were our best non-sale days. Same goes for Space Needle and Holland America: more tourists and more people coming into town.

It's a shared history (colors, trophies, name, etc. stayed in Seattle, but record books went to OKC). But I guess there's a possibility of buying OKC's "share" back and letting them establish all new franchise records.

There won't be an arena without a team secured and ready to move. The arena would take two years to build and a team would use KeyArena in the interim. That's all part of the MOU that was released last week. So if you really think about it, he made it sound like worst case scenario is have an arena by 2017, which means theoretically he's looking to get a team moved to Seattle a couple years before.

Kinda funny to think about how much longer the W's new arena is gonna take to build since they have the same target date.



Also kinda funny to think about how long of a process it is to come up with an arena agreement, and how fast it takes for #+%@ to crumble

just watched the documentary. i knew bennett had no intentions of staying in seattle, but i didnt know it was that bad. howard schulz really did do the city dirty.
seems like $tern and clay are good buddies and wanted him to have a team in okc.
seem like clay is they type of guy to put on a retro night and rock sonics gear

hopefully, seattle gets their franchise and history back along with a team

it's hard to say since im not a seattle fan but personally i think okc does a good job supporting that team as they did with the hornets in 05.

if i lived in okc i'd be happy we have a team now but not happy at how we got the team and i think alot of thunder fans would share that sentiment.  i know in 96 when the browns went to baltimore, the baltimore fans didn't want the browns name and a bunch of them didn't like how they got the team due to them knowing how it felt losing the colts to indy.

howard schultz is scum though,  i remember seeing a video of some sonics fans going off on him when he had a book signing a while back.

This is why I secretly blame Hurricane Katrina. Without that, the Hornets never relocate to OKC for awhile, and OKC never proves itself as a viable market. Stern saw the success of that short-term relocation (which was inevitable, considering the state of Oklahoma had no pro sports), and I think it was at that point he made it his mission to help OKC get a team. However, Stern didn't want to abandon New Orleans because of the hurricane aftermath, so he steered Clay Bennett to the next option: Sonics. To this day I'm convinced that if someone else even wanted to out-bid Bennett's group, Stern would have stepped in and forced the sale to Clay. That's how determined they were.

Wow, that was a very informative yet depressing read. So much of that stuff I didn't know about. All I kept hearing around that time was
"If we had stayed, we would have lost 60 million over the next 2 years, but if we left, we would immediately save 20 million". Had know idea
so much stuff was going on under the table. Even after reading that, I still don't have any animosity for the Thunder (unlike me hating the Titans
for leaving Houston), they just have too many players that I like on there. It's still an eye opener though, with all the damn snakes involved in
taking the Sonics
