OFFICIAL COMIC BOOK THREAD

Yo y'all, I'm going to be that guy who's a complete novice, but am really looking to get into comics.

Growing up, I had maybe a stack of fifty comics, mostly 90s stuff.

I want to get into the Marvel books of the 60s-early 90s, but I realize that amassing a comic collection isn't practical, and I don't really have extra space around my pad to keep hundreds (thousands?

) of comics.

So, my question is about Marvel Unlimited. It seems like a really good service, but I know it stumbled out of the gates pretty poorly.

I currently only have an iPhone, but I realize a tablet may be in order to get the most bang for my buck.

I'm sure some of you aficionados have the streaming service, and I know it's no replacement for owning the comics, but as a newcomer and casual fan, I'd love to get into some of the classic series'.

So do you guys like Marvel Unlimited? Do you feel like their classic selection is sufficient? What do you read it on? Can you use your laptop to read them?

Also on a kind of unrelated note, are there any comic streaming services that has the Spawn library? That was the only non-Marvel comic I ever read growing up.
Download Comixology app.  Sign up for an account, so whatever you get on your iphone, you can download and read on your future iPad.  I use my android tablet for a lot of reading, comixology is cool because it takes you frame by frame, so you dont get spoilers as you read through the comic strips.

edit: you can also read from any internet source from teh comixology website. Loook into it.

I've heard of it, but do they have an extended Marvel catalogue? I would figure that Marvel Unlimited would have more of what I'm looking for. :nerd:

Yeah they do. Marvel provides a lot for them. Not sure if they have everything Marvel Unlimited has or if it's exactly the same.

There's gonna be an upcoming announcement about MU soon so look out for that.

Do they have a streaming service for a monthly fee too?

Batman - The Dark Knight Rises

Batman - Year One

Batman - Arkham Asylum

DC Universe: The Stories of Alan Moore

Watchmen

X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills

Just to name a few

These mass produced comics? Never. Older comics only raised in value because they weren't produced in these ridiculous numbers and now deman >>>>>>>>>> supply. That will never be the case anymore. At least not for anything Marvel or DC makes. Maybe one day smaller comic companies will hit gold with character that becomes popular way down the line.

Only comics that ever raise in value these days is "First Appearance of [Insanely Popular Character]"

For great reading material:

Uncanny X-Force Vol. 1
Avengers Disassembled
House of M
Annihilation
The Thanos Imperative
Age of X
Messiah Complex
Messiah War
Second Coming
Warren Ellis' run on Thunderbolts (starts @ issue #110)
Dark Reign
Batman - The Killing Joke

Not just Messiah Complex crossover trilogy ALL of Cable Vol 2 and ALL of X-Force Vol 3 which I thought was better than Uncanny X-Force Vol 1. Hell they are cancelling both X-Force books and replacing it with X-Force Vol 4 starting in February. The starting roster is Cable, Psylocke, Fantomex, and Marrow.

The art style is even similar

People who weren't reading the 2008-2010 X-Comics missed out on a lot of good stuff. I thought New X-Men was also an awesome read but not a necessary read. Uncanny X-Men around that time was dope too.

You should also read Necrosha and X-Men Legacy Vol 1.

Outside X-Men I thought Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 was nice as well as Civil War. Civil War appealed to people who didnt even read comics. There were a lot of new comic fans after that event.
Do you think these would raise in value as the years go by?

I have never paid attention to that but I doubt it unless Silver Surfer gets more popular.

Not a DC fan so I couldnt say

Any1 know how well these comics raise in value?
Not by much. Speculators know not to go insane like they did in the 90s. It'll never reach the heights they were at once before unless a generation of ppl grow up in ignorance on how risky this actually is. Every now and then online there's the crazy obsessive collector that wants a rare issue in it's original format or really wants to complete their collection.

I can't tell what issue that Batman & Robin is cuz of the light but if it's not the first appearance of w/e that Robin or that last appearance probably not much. There has to be something critical occurring in it that matters. The death of someone which has a huge impact or the introduction of a character that is important or is very important when you're looking to sell.

just finished 1-17 of Avengers Arena... they are dragging that series for far too long :x
anybody know of a good site to dl comics? PM me :nerd:

I can't tell what issue that Batman
The Batman one is the first appearance of ra's al guhl and the other is the first appearance of the Silver Surfer. SS is $500 RAG is $450.  I like to collect things which have any kind of raise in value over the years, would you say all of these first appearances have potential?
If Ra's wasn't such a one note villain in Begins or if they did a Batman movie really pitting the two against each other; ideology vs. ideology, that Bat issue would've been worth buying if you were looking to sell online down the line.

Silver Surfer has potential depending on a lot of things. You'd have to wait it out.

As you can see a lot of this stuff is tied back in to a whole different medium now. The comic speculation prices will go as the movies and tv shows go. So if FOX manages a great F4 reboot and they bring in the SS again and it's really good this time you got great chances. You also have good chances if FOX fails but when Marvel gets the rights back they succeed with the F4 and possibly a crossover with Avengers for the coming of Galactus story. Then you'd be looking at a profit. This is all hypothetical though and requires patience.

With Ra's it's up in the air but I'd say right now it has slightly less potential than SS but I will say you can't underestimate crazy Batman fans. Might be a fan in the middle of summer in 2016 willing to drop a stack on that comic.

Warren Ellis Brings Marvel's "Moon Knight" Back to NYC
Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey have been announced as the creative team tasked to bring Marvel Comics' Moon Knight into his latest phase.

Announced this morning on Hero Complex, Ellis, Shalvey and colorist Jordie Bellaire are bringing the All-New Marvel NOW! title to readers in March, and relocating the hero from his Los Angeles base of operations established during Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev's 12-issue series to his original stomping grounds of New York City, part of Ellis' plan to present a version of the hero which "unifies all the previous takes, making the character whole and taking him forward into a new kind of crime fiction."

"The best Moon Knight stories for me were always ground-level but weird crime,” Ellis told HC. "'Weird crime' has kind of been the touchstone for me for this revival."

The biggest change the series will see is a shift away from previous writers' emphasis on the character's dissociative identity disorder. "I've known people with D.I.D.,," Ellis said. "I, they and any doctor can tell you [that] you can't catch D.I.D. just from pretending to be other people. If that was true, every actor in L.A. would be hospitalized."

"Moon Knight" #1, by Ellis, Shalvey and Bellaire, launches in March, 2013.

Warren Ellis. Declan Shavley. Moon Knight. **** YEAH!

This is just great news. Seems All-New Marvel NOW! is all about giving the B-list heroes (and lower) another and stronger chance to succeed (She-Hulk, Captain Marvel, Punisher, Black Widow, Elektra, New Warriors, Iron Patriot, Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider, Loki). I'm loving all the solos too. I had not had any hope for another Moon Knight revival but this is a pleasant surprise. Only thing left is if I got a Iron Fist/Shang Chi solo.

Comics for the week:
F4 14
Thunderbolts 18
Indestructible Hulk 15
Avengers 23 (best read of the week)
Superior Spidey Team-Up 6
Superior Spidey Annual (2nd best read of the week)
Young Avengers 12
DD 33
Secret Avengers 11
Avengers A.I. 6
A+X 14

Where would be the best place to sell comics? eBay? I don't have rare stuff, but I have some decent #1's, final issues, and variants I'd like to sell.

Ebay, amazon (get a feel for what price other ppl are selling) and at conventions (there you can up the price of what you're selling  ). You'll probably do best with variants as long as they're in good condition.

I don't know how reliable it is transaction wise but even craigslist would work for ppl who are in places where they don't have local comic shops and it's a bit too expensive to order stuff online.

Another thing I'd suggest to ppl looking to sell just to make some money. I know Marvel hooks you up with the AR app in the comics and codes. So you can always sell the code online for a $1 or two to ppl who just want that. I'd say check a few comic forums for buyers.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I didn't know people would pay money for those digital codes.

Haven't bought comics in forever, or been in this thread in forever, but this just happened

Bryan Lee O'Malley shot both Bendis and me down.

Now I'm talking to Bryan about comics....it's short, but I wonder how long I can keep it up, I'm fan girling right now

The Bendis/Maleev Moon Knight from like 2yrs ago was dope but was cancelled cause no one really buys it. I cant see it being better than that run but and the end of the day no one really knows the character so it ends up getting cancelled.

REally late to the party. But finally got around to reading The new 52 Batman Death of the family. (purchased from Amazon.) Wow. Needs to be made into an animated movie for real for real. lol.

DotF was cool. But I think Year Zero is going to be better once it's run is complete.

I also did like Snyder's work on Gates of Gotham and Black Mirror.

Gates of Gothem is dope as well. Really gives the city of Gotham some depth and history.
