Official NY Mets 2012 Thread. Time To Face The Yung God, Mets Face Harper For 3 Games.

This guy is going to have to die and someones going to have to overwhelm his son with an offer in order for this family to give up ownership. I don't even want to watch baseball this season. I hope people don't go to the stadium in protest.

It'll take more than that.  I personally believe that unless they financially could not operate the franchise any longer and/or MLB stepped in, which could have happened if they were found negligent in the Madoff case, the Wilpons will be here to stay.  They truly believe they can build the Mets into a winning organization, they're finally becoming more hands off...after they drove it into the ground.
It's too late to see any changes made for this season.  As much as 4th compared to 5th doesn't really matter, it'll just be embarrassing to come in last.  I just don't see how we can compete with the Phillies, Braves, Marlins and Nationals, just thinking that is pathetic but realistic.  Even if or when the Phillies big contracts/core guys are broken down or no longer effective, which could be soon, it doesn't even matter because the other 3 teams are building themselves into better teams than the Mets.  It's not just a matter of getting better, which we haven't, it's also that we might have a hard time beating our competition even if we do improve because we're in that big of a hole.

I think Ike can be really good, Duda too though the jury is still out.  Tejada could be solid, but not spectacular.  Murphy is a great hitter but a liability in the field.  Outside of that, are our minor league offensive prospects really something you can build around?  Guys like Valdespin and Flores, etc all have a lot to prove before you can even think about that so to build around them is too far away.  We're gonna probably need a catcher at some point.  Thole isn't it.  Pitching prospects should be strong at the top with Harvey, Wheeler and Familia.

Just keep in mind that some of those previously thought of up and coming guys haven't amounted to anything...Fernando Martinez, even though he's still young, would have to have a remarkable turnaround to even be close to what was expected.  Pelfrey is pretty much a bust, he had his moments but if he doesn't have a REALLY good year, it's time to move on.  Wright has been really good overall, even with the deserved criticism and Reyes was great aside from injuries but now he's gone mostly because of the Wilpons financial issues though they tried to pass it off for other reasons, he would've been signed to an extension without question if they weren't facing the possibility of going broke.  Niese could be a solid 3 if he stays healthy.  Otherwise, I don't even see how, unless every single prospect develops into the best case scenario for them fairly soon that we're competing for much of anything for a while.

Hopefully the Beltran trade was a great start, I was glad they finally absorbed the loss and cut ties with the wild pitcher and slappy at 2nd (names must never be said again).  The Wilpons are here to stay, I hope with this behind them they can made smart decisions with Alderson's directions AND occasionally open the checkbook when necessary.

Sorry for the long post.

I  don't see us competing til 2015, and that's depends largely on if we are willing to spend money(resigning Wright or/and pursuing FA's) and if our CORE young players improve(Ike, Duda, Niese, Gee, Tejada).
This division looks impossible to compete in from now to 2014, I'm wondering should we move Wright next off-season. I know for a fact, that Wright is sick of the losing, and would probably go to a better team in FA(if the money from both sides is pretty much the same).

A lot can happen in two years. HELL Who would've thought the Marlins would be a sleeper WS team in '12, two years ago? So many variables can change the fate of this franchise, so it's a bit early to say we're destined for failure for the foreseeable future. It's rough being a fan of this team, especially w/ the owner. However, when the Mets finally become good again, it'll be

.                                     If we win a WS, I would be off the wall, best believe I'm at the parade w/ my fellow NT Mets bruhs.

Dillon Gee looked great... Lucas Duda destroyed Stephen Strasburg today.

Too bad, it's Spring Training.

I drafted David Wright, Ike Davis, Frank Francisco and Johan Santana for my fantasy team.

For the Mets, I'm glad that ownership got over this hurdle with the Madoff defendant Pickard getting 160+ million as opposed to 400+ million.  Think these dudes definitely did well for themselves in this deal from the initial public opinion.
But, the fact that the Wilpons still have ownership is somewhat upsetting.

You own a team in NY, stop acting like you own a team in Pittsburgh and pony up dough for quality signings!

So it turns out Pelfreys contract isn't guaranteed. He only has a 14.90 ERA this spring after "working" on his sinker all offseason.

No Bratz, let's trade him in July, and get a prospect or two. Thus giving Swhinden a shot to show his worth.

I couldn't care less what happens with the Wilpons money at this point, it isn't mine. So there's no benefit to me as a fan to cutting Pelfrey before opening day even if he frustrates the hell out of me. So I kinda hope they hold onto him and try to trade him if anyone sees value in him.

Who is going to give us anything more than a career minor leaguer/AAAA player for Pelf and his contract? League wide cuts are about to be made. Better off bringing in someone else and seeing what they can do. I wanted them to nontender him and sign Paul Mohalom this winter.

Now that this whole lawsuit is settled and ended in the Wilpons favor, I would try and throw some money at Roy Oswalt. Pitch here for half a season, show he's healthy. It would be like buying prospects at the deadline. Send him to a contender, give us Wheeler 2.0.

I lobbied for him to be traded after that year he posted an ERA under 3 and he looked like a good pitcher but of course, it didn't happen. Pelfrey is a bum with mental problems that needs to be out of New York. This team also needs to trade Wright. Plain and simple, he is not a winner or a leader.

I can't wait till this team is blown up and we see a real rebuilding process.

Sure he's no Votto or Longoria, but he's a great player in his own right. Put Wright in a fair park and a good lineup(both of which he'll be in this year) and he'll flourish(not '08 Wright, but a .280/.380 OBP/30 HR/.500 SLG player). He strikes out a lot in the clutch, but that's largely due to being the "only" guy in a lineup.

Pelf is an every other year innings eater. He'll pitch decent this year, given that pitchers often get injured, he'll have value in June/July. We can pick up a bench MLB player for Pelf, and that's something that we need.

I would love to get Oswalt, but he will have his choice of teams to sign with, and won't come here.

Trading Wright is one thing if you have a capable replacement either now or down the road. Do the Mets even have that? Otherwise you're just getting worse at that position too.

Sandy should trade him for a C + level prospect come the deadline.

My dream off-season for 2013, would for us to do the following:

- Trade Santana for a decent pool of prospects.

- Trade Bay for a decent prospect or bench MLB player

- Extend any young player that plays well. DON'T let Ike/Niese/Duda/anyone 26 or under that's plays well sniff FA. Thus, we lock up our players at a bargain(ala the Tampa Bay Rays method).

-  Sign BJ Upton for a 7-10 mil/year deal. Anything more, and he can go eff himself.

- Sign Matt Cain or Cole Hamels.

Even after those changes, we'd still be short of the PO, but we'd certainly be closer to it. I hope we're players in the FA market this December, because I'd be pissed if we don't go after anyone good and young.

I agree with your Murphy sentiment, but they are hellbent on having him on this team. Less thinking, more reacting and not having to turn the double play is better for young Daniel if Wright is traded. Ideally, Havens can step into the 2B job but who knows there anymore.

Wright is good, he's just not a superstar. Put him on a team with bats around him, he can rake. I don't think he's ever been the same after getting beaned though, and I can't really blame him for it.

I'd rather spend big money on a bat in the futre than an arm. We actually have decent arms in the minors. Wheeler/Harvey can be 1-2 type pitchers. Gee I think can be a No. 3 guy as well. Our bats however are poor and unproven. No point in naming names right now cause we won't be able to spend money for a few years though.

Johan looked excellent his last springtraining start.

and I love Murph man, he is more than capable of playing the infield, and he really has good discipline at the plate, need to get rid of him. Unfortunate injury last year.

David......on the fence man, they need to stop acting like a small market team and at least keep him since Reyes just walked away, I don't see why you don't hold on to him and just keep developing players around him, assuming he wants to be around that.

- Extend any young player that plays well. DON'T let Ike/Niese/Duda/anyone 26

I agree, and let Bay go away, hope he plays well have a season so the Mets can get SOMETHING in return.

I have trust with the GM and have no issues with rebuilding, it won't take as long as you think.

The division is loaded that's the only problem.  Washington/Florida/Braves have really good futures.  PHilly will be over-the-hill sonner than people think, they'll be irrelevant faster than people think.
