Revisiting the 2004 NBA Finals, Lakers Vs. Pistons What Happened?

Kobe was gunning for Finals MVP that year, but shot a horrible percentage(38%)and took way too many bad shots with Prince playing great Defense

Agreed.  Robin tried to play the role of Batman this series and it just wasn't meant to be.  Sometimes folks just have to realize their role in life and just play their position.  Robin tried to over extend himself and it ended up costing him and his team a possible championship.  Not to mention that Pistons team was just wanted it more than the Lakers.

Similar to the 06 Colts.
They went to a finals the next year and took the spurs to seven games man.

I feel your pain. I remember tellin all the Laker haters at my school Lakers are gonna sweep then I had to eat those words all summer. Winning those last 2 eases the pain though.

Makes you wonder what else your dad has been lying to you about.
You should confront him... drink heavily first, though.

i wish #8 could stay in his prime forever.

kobe will always be my favorite player of all time.   dude was/is special.  such a joy to watch.  whether he had amazing historical games, or he goes 3-20 like sunday night lol its all love

in Phils book he was quite a few reasons.  He really believed if Malone could give them 80% they would have won that series.

...and that attitude is exactly what created that monster.

I remember we had so many injuries in that series that Kobe ended up having to guard Corliss Williamson a couple of times in the post...I still believe to this day that if Karl Malone had been healthy we still would've won despite all of the other problems. He had just played some incredible D in the previous serious against prime KG who was better than Sheed.

That Detroit Team was on a mission that year. They were a Scalabrine 4th quarter/Overtime explosion in Game 5 to making that series not as close as the the Seven games made it out to be.

Game 1 they held the nets to 56 points. In a Playoff game. 56 points. The Nets did not score 70 in game 7.

The Pacers hit 80 once that whole series in a Game 4 win. that series was a dog fight as well. Probably better than the NBA Finals matchup vs the Lakers. The Kobe/Shaq dispute is an excuse. They were functioning to get to the finals. I think the Malone injury was more of a reason if any.

Detroit does not fit into the description of one and done either. Although it did not have the glitz and glam of an NBA game, the Pistons/Spurs Finals was probably one of the best played Basketball Series in a long time. Two teams that played the right way and traditionally. That series came down to the last few minutes in Game 7. If anything, Detroit could not do one thing and that was win on the road in San Antonio.

Larry Brown " taught the Pistons how to play the game the right way" which is all ESPN would cram down your throat for the rest of the summer / off season

@ dudes in here making excuses for the Lakers like they should have won it. That season's Pistons team (players, coaching staff, management) was one of the best ever assembled. Point blank. Even if Kobe and Shaq were best friends and Malone was 100%, the Pistons still take that series. Stop acting like it was a fluke and you should have won just because it's the Lakers. You got beat, and years later some of you still can't deal with it.

looking back at that series as well, oh good lord it was painful to be a Laker fan on Niketalk during the aftermath of game 5 and into the summer.

i wish yuku was running back then so that niketalk couldn't have exploded the way it did after the pistons won game 5.

still though, i remember the LA Times talking about the series was going to be a sweep, at worst 5 games with the Lakers spanking the Pistons.

i hate em and im glad their going to be mediocre for a long time to come but that 2003-04 detroit pistons team was one of the more underrated nba champions ever, if Larry Brown doesn't leave after 05 to go coach his one year "Dream Job" the Pistons come out the east again in 06 and 07 as it was obvious they didn't respect Flip Saunders at all.

The craziest thing about this series is I thought the lakers were going to come back even down 3-1

Shaq and Kobe each had real clunkers, but look at the production the rest of the team was giving. It was putrid. No Laker outside Shaq and Kobe scored in double figures until Game 5.

Game 3 and Game 5 is all you need to know about to figure out why that series played out the way it did. The Pistons dominated Game 3 defensively, then in Game 5, all five starters scored in double figures (Ben Wallace had 18 and 22). That Pistons team was so dialed in it was disgusting. That's why I say the series almost felt like a sweep.
