No, I do not believe they sold out. They take the colorways down regularly now it seems only to put them back up again (few days or weeks later).

Received my NDC order of the BLK/WHT trainers, all three were unpadded.
So happy they were otherwise they would have been returned with the quickness.
Love the sock like feel of the unpadded heel.

It has nothing to do with look, its all about comfort and feel. I love the minimal bear feel the unpadded heel provides.
The padded heel adds to much bulk for me.
Some like crew cut socks, some like no show socks. Some like zoom air, some like max air.

i orded a pair of racer and a pair of trainers off ndc and am going to return both to NTNY, I feel each shoe has benefits that the other doesnt, I will wait till they combine the positive parts of each into one

Yeah there wasn't a requirement in terms of number of pairs. I think it was started too late from initial release so we lost traction.
