Has anyone participated in this race? I am going to do it come May for the first time. Any advice on training for it would be truly appreciated.

not as inspiring

but i'm training for this:
the Dirty Dash

Mental and physical endurance. Develop a training program with strong cardio and emphasis and extreme focus on upper body strength. This comment also directly relates to Tough Mudder and Warrior Dash. Will be doing the Mudder October 20-21 in NJ. 13-mile course.

Spartan Race and Warrior Dash are pretty weak.

I did Tough Mudder three times, and will do a second one this year.

The first time I did Tough Mudder I was definitely tested.

2nd and 3rd time weren't as bad.

I want to do the spartan race in NJ which is in June i think but my cardio training has been horrid. I'm going to enter the 3 mile course which is the shortest one.

Doing Gladiator Rock N' Run in May.

Not as challenging as Tough Mudder or Warrior Dash but should still be fun nonetheless.

 I have zero interest in doing these, but I admire people who do complete it.
If there were any in my area I'd go just to watch and cheer everyone on

I have done all of these and they are pretty challenging for the avg person. Just keep in mind, that is really not a race unless you are trying to win. If winning is your objective then you better be prepare to be tested!

My routine

short fast pace (no less than 3 miles) - long slow pace (no less than 6 miles) - rest or short jog  (2 miles) - max effort (4-5 miles all you have) - random hills (3-4 miles slow) - beach run (you are going to be tested 2 miles)- rest or short jog (2 miles)

that's my routine!

Anyways, you really want to have fun on a run - look into HASH runs! Now that's a run that you will enjoy!

just signed up for my first spartan race in September.

im pretty active and have done 5ks, 10ks and completed the LA marathon. i think ill fare well.

im starting off with a Sprint cause id like to get a feel for it, might look into the longer courses if all goes well

anyone else completed a course like this?

Where is your race?

I did one 4-5 years ago. Cardio wise you'll be fine, but take care of your hands man. Once they start to hurt life will suck doing the obstacles.

Lots of fun

No problem man. Just try to keep them as dry (mud free) as possible. The ropes are what rubs your hands raw.

Done two spartan runs and two tough mudders. All around 14 miles.

Biggest thing is to build up your cardio, and upper body and make sure you hydrate as much as possible before the race. People cramp a lot during the race.

Came in thinking this was a race thread.

Pleasantly surprised.

We have a zombie run in oct 8)
Body is ready

I did the spartan race in Monterrey just last month. I did not train specifically for the race but I was still able to complete all 13 miles in 4 hours and 20 minutes. I had to do it because a client is a big fanatic and my work thought it would be a good idea for me to go to strengthen our business relationship.

I was coming down with the flue which made the race so much worse. Be prepared to take on hills :x unless the race you are doing is on a flat area. I did it in the middle of nowhere and cannot tell you how many hills they had us going up and down.

As far as training goes, I go to the gym about 4 times a week but I suggest you start doing cardio! Train your mind and legs for the long run. A lot of the challenges require upper body strength but your legs will be the determining factor on whether you finish the race or not. Good luck!
