Sony Launches Female Superhero Movie Mining Spider-Man Universe

EXCLUSIVE: Having pushed the next installment of its Spider-Man franchise out of 2016 and into 2018, Sony Pictures is doing a top-to-bottom revamp of its most important property, insiders say. And that includes a female superhero movie which is being eyed for a 2017 release date, Deadline has learned.

Sinister Six, the next installment from writer-director Drew Goddard, was announced in April and its release date revealed during this year’s Comic-Con. It will bow November 11, 2016. The villain bash is the first of several planned character and story expansions for the Spider-Man franchise which the studio is hanging onto by developing other character spinoffs — much like Fox has done with its successful X-Men franchise. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing Sinister Six, which revolves around all the villains of Spider-Man converging after the evil Dr. Octopus summons them.

There are a lot of different Sinister Six team-ups so it has yet to be revealed which characters might appear, but one possibility is Vulture, Mysterio, Electro, Kraven the Hunter and Sandman. And Goddard is said to be a supreme comic book geek — not that there’s anything wrong with that — who truly understands all the aspects of the Spider-Man universe and its characters and storylines which is key for that movie and the next. “Having Goddard on board places the movie in the hands of someone who has lived in this world,” said one person who knowledge of the property. “If you look at Cabin In The Woods, he did such a phenomenal job on that in redefining and commenting on the genre while also completely embracing it. He’s a fanboy which compliments his talents as a filmmaker.”

After the villains emerge, get ready for the power of the women from the Spider-Man universe. Which characters they will develop is up for speculation, but we know that Lisa Joy Nolan (Westworld) has been hired to script and that again Arad and Tolmach are producing. There are several strong possibilities — Silver Sable, Black Cat, Stunner, Firestarter and Spider-Woman, to name a few.

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO! What the **** are they doing over there! Jessica Drew nor Felicia Hardy need their own film. Avi Arad is smoking rocks man

Yeah, they're pushing back ASM but trying this ****

Marvel needs the rights back.

Garfield coulda been one of the greats in the superhero world.. damn sony.

Let them keep expanding and expanding their Spider man franchise.

A S6 flop and a Spider woman flop might have Sony running to Marvel screaming for their mommies :nerd:

This is just what fans wanted. Sony totally has an eye for refreshing, engaging content

People will flock in droves to see this movie

How interesting

How wanted

I'd totally be down for a Spider-Woman movie. Always liked Jessica Drew. They can do a lot with her without comic book restraints. Maybe even bring in some of her themes and villains in a new possible way (clearly can't use Hydra but they might have something else available).

Could even shake up the dynamic and expectations of ppl expecting Mary Jane to swoop in and be the only new love interest. Peter Parker could have a nice love rectangle with Spider-Woman, Black Cat, and MJ.

A Black Cat movie is more of a struggle unless they just have superb writing for it especially since it'll be a bit of an origin and they're trying to frame her in the light of a anti-hero/thief. However, if they're just connecting her more to Oscorp and S6 then it's a bit easier and it's just be a solo villain film.

I just told this to my brother yesterday. I'm hoping it flops so they can eventually give it back to Marvel and put Spider Man with The Avengers. But that's me speaking selfishly.

And I just saw the other day that the status of AS3 is up in the air, which is stupid considering how this one ended. I pray SM flops on Sony hard. It will make money but I hope they don't think it's worth it to keep the franchise.

ASM3 isn't in as much trouble as people are making it out to be, Marc Webb is still attached to direct and if you really think about it, 2016 is a loaded year and they really aren't doing themselves any favors trying to compete.

For 2016, there are:

BvS
Cap3
Doctor Strange
Xmen: AoA
Alice in Wonderland 2
Planets of the Apes 3
Independence Day 2
Tarzan
King Arthur
And possible HTTYD 3 or Finding Dory (Finding Nemo spin-off)

And that doesn't include any low budget comedy similar in vein as 22 Jump Street or This is the End that steals a few millions from these other blockbuster films.

On another news... Carnage possibly be in the Venom solo-film.

The Sinister Six will be a big test, and it sounds like Venom won't be far behind. Deadline notes that the film that will be directed by Alex Kurtzman, from a script he's co-writing with Ed Solomon, seems to be aiming for a 2017 release date in between The Sinister Six and The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Does that mean Venom could end up popping up in the 2018 sequel? We're not sure, but the spin-offs title does tell us something.

Supposedly the title for the spin-off Venom film will be Venom Carnage, implying that one of the other major Spider-Man villains will be the force with which the anti-hero Venom will have to contend with. Like Venom, the character Carnage was created with an alien symbiote. But unlike Venom, the host who becomes Carnage is an absolutely madman, and essentially becomes a much more powerful and evil version of Venom. Both Venom and Carnage appear together a lot, and even had their own bigger story arc in Venom vs. Carnage, a comic book series from 2004, so it makes perfect sense for the big screen.

Now that Emma Stone is gone, I have no more reason to watch a spider man movie. I'm done with spidey movies until the rights revert.

ASM2 was good but could've been better. Now instead of trying to make an awesome ASM3 movie they're trying to do a Marvel and expand their property, only they have no material to expand with. S6? Spiderwoman? It's going to flop so hard bro

just no
Word I don't even get that.

He already signed the contract so it aint like ASM3 isn't gonna get made. Besides the type of character he plays is never gonna fully captivate the world to where it translates in to awards or billions in the box office.
Miles Morales is buns

I agree only because Pete, and Otto, are the only Spider-Man's I've ever paid attention to. What makes Miles special other than being Dominican?
He got different powers and a funny friend. I'm sure they'll just lift all of Peter's Spidey stories and give it to Miles anyway if that were to happen

At this point I know I'd pay to see a death of Peter Parker movie by Marvel and then Miles Morales instead of watching SONY struggle with their booty adaptions of great stories or don't even do the great stories justice.

On the contrary, a dominican Spider man is very special.

I'm all for having more diversity among major superheroes.

Making Nick Fury black. Making Thor a woman. Making a hispanic/black spider man. Marvel should keep it up. Keep on going.

Having an all white superhero cast is a reflection of how old these marvel characters have been around, but I'm all for updating them to reflect newer times.

It depends but they could be referring to the Spider-Woman around the time they sold the movie rights: Mattie Franklin.

Aside from some of the movie visuals this movie was trash. Those deleted scenes could've made the Goblin's presence in the movie a bit stronger instead of just making it seem like a quick cameo to kill Gwen and get his *** kicked right away. Only thing keeping this movie from being on the same level as SM3 is a dancing scene. It was a cluttered mess. :smh:
