As AMC‘s Breaking Bad is heading into its final eight-episode run this summer, the network and series producer Sony TV are exploring keeping the franchise alive with a spinoff series centered on one of Breaking Bad‘s most recognizable supporting characters, Bob Odenkirk‘s unflappable criminal lawyer Saul Goodman. There are no deals in place yet as the project is in its nascent stages, but I hear it is being conceived by Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan and series writer-producer Peter Gould, who created the Saul character together for a Season 2 episode written by Gould. In the episode, titled “Better Call Saul“, Walt (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse (Aaron Paul) hire the flamboyant Goodman after Badger (Matt L. Jones) is caught by the DEA. Goodman, who has been a regular presence on the show since, is a sleazy but highly competent criminal lawyer with a penchant for over-the-top TV commercials in which he uses his signature tagline “Better Call Saul!” Saul has served as Breaking Bad‘s comic relief, which is not surprising given Odenkirk’s strong comedy background. As a result, I hear the potential spinoff is eyed as a comedy, which could be one-hour, but a half-hour format also is being explored.

The idea for the potential spinoff had been gestating for awhile, with Gilligan mentioning it hypothetically in the past. “I would love to see a Saul Goodman spinoff,” he said in a July 2012 interview. “I like the idea of a lawyer show in which the main lawyer will do anything it takes to stay out of a court of law. He’ll settle on the courthouse steps, whatever it takes to stay out of the courtroom. That would be fun — I would like that.”

Watching The Shield recently has made me even more excited to see how Breaking Bad ends.
The way Mackey managed to technically get away free, but still lose so much, was the ultimate bittersweet ending for such an antihero character. Breaking Bad has a similar dynamic where you can't decide whether to root for the main character to succeed or fail (although Walt has been trending more towards pure villain) and I'm hoping they pull off a similarly satisfying ending.

I was never that excited about a Saul spin-off. I'd certainly watch and support it, but I'm skeptical.

It doesn't have to be a big prodcution. Just a couple seasons maybe while Gilligan cooks up a new project would do.

My thoughts as well. Let's just say if it wasn't made I wouldn't lose sleep over it... However if it's made, my love for Breaking Bad would make me watch it.

Yeah, Saul is good in small doses (a few episodes here and there).

A whole show dedicated to his shenanigans might be overkill.

I would watch that Saul spinoff just cause Breaking Bad was so good, but honestly I won't be expecting much from it.

I'll say this much. Once BB is done, I'll just about be done with AMC.

I don't watch Mad Men and The Walking Dead is wearing thin.

Breaking Bad, has always, from the very first episode, been a black comedy to me. It's Coen-esque. And the humor comes whether Saul is a part of the show or not, so anything that keeps Vince Gilligan in a BB state of mind, and in this world he built, will be appreciated.

No one ever promised a great creative mind more than 1 great creative work, so I'm in already. I don't think it'd be a one-man show with Saul or My Name is Saul. 13 eps, bring the bitter, and I'm there.

I'd rather see that than show about Saul

-I'm hoping this final season has a scene of walt being jesse's teacher in HS, if they do i hope it's a scene saved for the final episode(would make a dope cold open)
-i want to see a hank flashback scene too, like when he was a rookie.(would be a nice cold open for the episode he confronts walt)
-I'm ready to call this the GOAT at season's end. Currently re-watching the series(missed it waaaaay too much to wait till july)
-I'm in season 4 premiere where gus is getting jesse sober by making him do money runs with mike...great TV
