  • Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini is worried he has lost the initiative in the race to sign Arsenal striker Robin van Persie, 28.
  • And Mancini is furious with City's bosses as Van Persie looks set to slip away from him.
  • Feyenoord coach Ronald Koeman has given Aston Villa a week to sort out a deal to buy defender Ron Vlaar, 27.
  • Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he considered bringing Didier Drogba to Old Trafford during the summer after the striker, 34, left Chelsea.
  • Fulham are also apparently considering a bid for Dutchman Babel.
  • Andy Carroll has told Liverpool they will not force him to leave Anfield.
  • Zenit St Petersburg have joined the race to sign Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel, 27, with Manchester City and Napoli also interested.
  • Nottingham Forest want to bring Jermaine Jenas, 29, back to the City Ground as they look to land the Tottenham midfielder.

Got a chance to meet the team today. Got some pics of the Belgians, Ashley Cole's terrible new cut, and the Brasilians and Fernando.

Dude most traditional statistics are worthless. We're really going to use converted penalties and assist to rate the quality of a CB? and there's no point in comparing modern fullbacks with center backs, the vast majority of fullbacks today play more like traditional wingers than defenders.

Advanced performance metrics like Opta Stats aren't perfect yet but they offer much better data points for objectively evaluating players.

Personally I was very impressed with Koscielny last season. Highly mobile, physically strong, good brain and a bit of nastiness to him. Idk if I'd rate him as high as #2 in the EPL but he was definitely in my top 5 at the CB position.

BUT based strictly off Opta stats a strong case can be made that Koscielny was a top 2 CB.

He lead EPL defenders in minutes per tackle, interceptions, and balls won in the defensive third. He also bested Terry in just about every stat except % of Aerial 50-50's won and pass completion %.

Statistically he was a top CB last season. If he replicates the positives from last season, cuts down on the defensive errors, and takes a little bit more care with the ball, he's gonna get his plaudits.

Either way fantastic long term signing for Arsenal.

Dax McCarty has been playing very well lately at the holding mid spot, I'm guessing Marquez drops back to CB opposed to replacing him.
Henry - - - - - Cooper
Cahill
Lindpere/Lade - - - - - - - - - - - - - - LeToux

I remember watching a lot of Arsenal games last season. He looked decent out there. I thought Vermaelan looked sharp out there too.
Kos stuck out for me in a few games, but not enough for me to rate him as high as Opta did.

As for Evra, I think he was oooookay, but the times when he dropped the ball were so damn blatant and crucial it warrants SAF looking into a replacement. Against City he was sick.gifmean.gif I figure Baines will come, especially with the bid for Moura being rejected. (My guess is SAF will push for Sahin & Baines- now that Spurs are trying to tie another RM player to Modric deal)

Transfer Spec:

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez could beat Everton, Sunderland, Aston Villa and Celtic to sign Real Mallorca centre-back Ivan Ramis, 27

Everton defender Johnny Heitinga, 28, is set to move to Turkish side Fenerbahce in a £5m deal within the next few days

Loic Remy is moving closer to joining Newcastle after they contacted his club Marseille with a view to signing the £15m-rated France striker. (if this is true, Newcastle are going to be VERY interesting to watch this season) smokin.gifsmokin.gifsmokin.gifsmokin.gif

Roma have edged ahead of Chelsea and Manchester United in the race to sign Benfica midfielder Axel Witsel, 23.

Oscar, 20, is edging nearer his move to Chelsea according to Internacional's president Giovanni Luigi, who claims discussions are at an advanced stage.
I haven't seen that much of Oscar, is he really that good? I don't know if we need him because Mata and Hazard can play the #10 role.

He's an excellent young player. He'll be able to pull the strings from the hole better than Mata and Hazard because he's adept with both feet. That attribute along with his vision and ability to maintain/recycle possession makes him an ideal playmaker. Some problems may arise with width as you'll have three players who drift towards the middle, but since they'll be playing a variation of the 4-3-3 the width should be provided by the FBs. (though aside from Cashley, I don't know how well the other FBs will fare in that role)

They'll probably stick with 4-2-3-1 actually. Lampard is set to play holding mid with Ramires so we'd have Mata, Hazard and Meireles as our 3 front mids, which will make for a very fluid and creative offensive attack running at a frenetic pace. Having all 3 of Marin, Malouda and Oscar (not sure if he is currently signed or not but it seems imminent) on the bench is very key too as all of them are more than capable of stepping in and not missing a beat. Really like what Chelsea has done this summer. In a perfect offseason, we would've grabbed Hulk and another defender but I'm more than satisfied with what the front office has done.

Speaking of Hulk, those Porto fees are absolutely ridiculous. laugh.gif

He showed some nice touches in Cape Town too.

I think with time and Rooney and co will really help bring out his talent..

He seems to have a great ability to hold onto the ball...

Not saying that you're all that wrong, but RDM doesn't seem to be keen to play Ramires as one of the pivots, and I think the pairing of Lampard/Meireles/McEachran with Mikel/Essien/Romeu is going to be the more likely setup. Though I don't like it, personally RDM seems to like to play Ramires wide right, and while he doesn't necessarily possess the passing ability needed for the possesion based attack that we seemingly seem to be striving for, I think he sees him as a huge threat on the counter, and possibly a piece to assist in defense with the amount of attack minded players they will have in the side.

I honestly don't believe that Malouda will be in the team by the time that the season begins, and I think that KDB will perform the duties that Malouda has recently, with his ability to play on the flanks or centrally. I would still love to see a piece like Willian or Jovetic brought in and an RB like Azilpilicueta, and I think that the club would be in excellent shape.

From what I heard Oscar to Chelsea done for 25m today.
Yea, ESPN tweeted that it was done. The Thorgan deal was done yesterday, not sure if it was mentioned.
Bale might be facing a ban until Aug 12. He said he couldn't play for Team GB due to an injury and was playing against the LA Galaxy yesterday.

USA looking sharp with 4-2 right now...
I thought I was going to see some sexy football with Brazil...now that I see them lining up for the anthems, all I can hope for is some good football now ohwell.gif

Btw, I'm wondering, surely there has to be a female player far above the rest....

Who is the Ronaldo/Messi of womens football? Is there one?
