He didn't deserve to be a first round pick in any capacity.

Mallet has a cannon. Rare arm out of the Cutler and Stafford mold. Learning under the greatest Q of our generation.

Barkley was a consensus top-5 pick one year previous. A bad season at USC doesn't change his evaluation completely for me. He played behind a porous offensive line. Admittedly tried to do too much and forced things, thus the increased turnovers. He did benefit from Lee and Woods. What a luxury.

That may be true with what you say about Weeden and Barkley's draft positioning, but I don't really care about all that. If they end up producing like they need to then it doesn't really matter where they were drafted. We can discuss value at certain draft slots and all, but the Browns had a vision at that point and it's unfortunate that that regime didn't have the chance to see it through.

Do we know if Mallet really learned though or what it was he did learn? Everyone loves a QB with a cannon, but its always been more about accuracy, anticipation, and mental preparation and resolve.

What I'm saying is Barkley can't fail as a fourth round pick. The value is tremendous. The pressure is minimal.

Weeden has to prove he can overcome age and an inflated draft slot.

We won't know about Mallet until Brady retires or Bill trades him (Ry).

You can't take a beating when you're riding the pine rest of your career.

Two years max before Cleveland admits Weeden was a failed experiment.

I'm still waiting for the Jets to see/admit that with Sanchez.

It's more likely to fail now, but I can't put all that on Weeden. Regime changes really can set teams/players back when a certain plan gets derailed and you bring in new people with different thoughts and ideas. It doesn't matter to all the best of the best players, because they'll still be great, but for those players that cover a certain niche or do something along the lines of a regimes vision, then that can be very valuable. I think Weeden was that niche type QB, but does the new regime hold the same sentiments about the direction of Cleveland to allow Weeden the best chance a success?

That's how I truly feel about Colt McCoy. He got shafted. Dude is a successful game manager with winning pedigree. Out of the Jeff Garcia and Chad Pennington mold.

Why waste the other first rounder? Build around Trent. Add a lineman or receiver with that late first instead.

that was a nasty hit by mays. schaub had balls to keep going. respect. houston losing though.

Yeah, I like Colt. Feisty competitor.

Very valid point, but who knows the conversations in that war room? I felt they had a certain trust with taking Weeden knowing they could get a veteran-type quarterback (in terms of maturity, habits and leadership) in the rookie draft. There's still that learning curve, but they probably didn't think it'd be so steep given what we knew about Weeden. At OKST, there was a lot to like about Weeden. I think the age factor and the draft slot is really diminishing the idea that this guy may actually be able to succeed.

Last time I checked you need to win in the playoffs to go to the Super Bowl.

I have high hopes for Mallet... really liked him coming out of Arkansas. Will be intriguing to see how he emerges after sitting for so long. Post-Tom, he should get his chance if development doesn't derail.

i still can't believe the semi-hype around Mallet. dude has a cannon, yes. has anyone seen him work in NE's offense during preseason and/or blowouts? dude CONSTANTLY sails balls 5-10 feet over receivers heads. he needs to reign it in a bit. he's got the arm...but i dunno. let's see if he's improved....no doubt we're going to see plenty of him this preseason.

I was waiting for DSA to come in here with the Mallet slander

Between him and Edleman dude gets vexed.

i'm just saying...what have people seen from him at this level :nerd:

as for edelman...i have no choice this year but to believe in him. he's the freakin' veteran on this squad :x

Exactly. Thanks for chiming in, because that's the same things I was seeing. Way too erratic to be relied upo. Interested to see what, if any, improvements he's made, but from what I've seen so far, he's nothing but that dirty word...Potential.

Well, in this particular case, I think he's right.

But yeah...It's that whole what looks sexy thing. Arm strength and height are all ancillary luxuries in my opinion. There's more value in other aspects of playing quarterback.

Mike Zimmer is a hell of a coach.

Tyler Eifert is going to be a huge weapon for the Bengals.

James Harrison is like the real life Bane. He was born in the darkness.

Giovanni Bernard makes Harrison Barnes look like Malcolm X.

James Harrison is the player you love when he's on your team and hate when he's not. Not hypocritical, it just is what it is. That's his caricature.
.

But that's being a hypocrite. Either like the type of football he plays or don't, regardless of team

Bengals have talent, lot will depend on AJs knee and if there are no issues there along with Dalton and the explosiveness of the offense. For all the weapons he had last year the offense was pedestrian for many games. As for Pitt I like them under the radar, Bell running well and rookie safety Shamarko Thomas has been looking great. Nicknamed 'headache' for his hits, I'm sure Roger loves that. AFCN will be tough, as always

"Small melee" disrupts Panthers camp

Well into the second full week of camp, the Panthers had their chippiest practice Tuesday morning, when a number of dust-ups led to what coach Ron Rivera described as a “small melee” involving several players during team period.

“I think we're getting to the point where we can't wait to play against somebody else. It was disappointing that it lingered and it lasted as long as it did,” Rivera said.

Things started when safety D.J. Campbell hit tight end Greg Olsen near the sideline, prompting Olsen to get up, fire the ball at Campbell and yell at him.

Safety Mike Mitchell and cornerback Josh Norman then took turns getting into it with receiver Brandon LaFell. The biggest scrum involved offensive tackle Byron Bell and defensive end Greg Hardy, who was then thrown to the ground by receiver Steve Smith."
