I'm not really worried about signing Russell, Earl, or Sherman ultimately. It's never that hard to find the money for players you want to keep if you want to keep them. It's said to see guys like Red Bryant be cut this year, but our cap situation is ultimately strong.
The narrative about Seattle having depth because of those contracts is overrated. We had Sidney Rice and Zach Miller this year, for example, as two of the highest paid in the league at their positions, now both are getting cut. The depth is from strong drafting. If that continues, we remain elite for a long time. If you miss on a whole draft, like the 49ers in 2012, the cracks start to show.
Because of the flexibility to cut players and restructure contracts, the cap isn't as much of a burden as it's so often made out to be. Unless you really are screwing up like Jerry Jones or Dan Snyder.
