I am somewhat curious how the movie This is the End will affect MoS' box office #'s. It comes out today/tonight and if people are only set on seeing one film this week (and I know plenty who does) then that is a sale away from MoS. The film look hysterical and I will be seeing it next week for sure. I doubt it'll beat MoS for the 31 spot and I might be reaching but a lot is riding on the MoS' success so every dollar counts.

gonna see both movies on saturday double feature = 6 hours at the theatre

Just got back from the movie..and I'll try to review without spoiling it...

My lady and I are both big time Superman fans (she's more into the smallville story line so take that for what its worth....). The movie is cut in a way where your learning who Clark is as Clark is trying to figure out who he really is. The movie is very fast paced, going from place to place, flash backs to present day, but its done in a way that you kind of understand how troubling it must be really being Clark Kent.

The action scenes are amazing, its everything you would want in a Superman movie...the last fight scene the end with Zod is epic and full of surprises

I can see why the movie has been criticized for its fast pace, I dont think this movie is for the average movie go-er...but this is a different take on Superman, one that I happen to like a lot and even after being out of the movie for an hour I cant stop thinking about what I just witnessed.

Edit::: I expected waaaaay more from Michael Shannon. A lot of his scenes felt a bit forced. He LOOKED like a bad ***..but just not really as bad *** as I thought he could have been. Cavill as Superman is legit though.

^yeah, everytime I saw Shannon/Zod, I just could never get past his his goofy looking face  but, I enjoyed the movie VERY much. Will definitely see it again.

I liked the movie a lot, but can understand why some may criticize it.

Not sure if it was just me, but the IMAX 3D seemed pretty nonexistent. (I know it was converted post-production)

Just came back from the movie. The spurs lost but MoS made up for it...sorta.

The reason I said sorta is because I now get the point of the review and why some of them were mixed as opposed to all of them being great or 5/5 stars. The movie kinda forces you to except the fact that their is another planet and that its blowing up an that they send their only son to earth and this and that without really giving you a conclusive why. I mean we all know the superman story but they make the characters and the world around him so realistic it's hard to except the naïveté they show sometime throughout the movie.

The flashback scenes of Clark in his youth going through the beginning stages of his powers are some of the best scenes. There's a lot of emotion, compassion, and a little comedy in these scenes and they alter your perception on adult Clark kent and how he views the world and how he thinks they view them. Henry Cavill as superman is simply amazing. He embodies the superman role. Amy Adams  Russel Crowe was great as Jor el too. The casting in this movie was great which leads me to General Zod. Michael Shannon's performance was dull sometimes but powerful at most. Him along with faora give superman the action he's never experienced on the big screen before. Lots of great CGI and the final fight between Zod and superman was really good but coulda been much better in my opinion. All in all I give the movie an 8.5/10. It was a really good movie and that fact that it was a superman film will leave you even more satisfied but you can't help but feel like their could've been more...well here's to a sequel

Good movie. I understand certains points of criticism but I liked it as the first entry in what should be a couple movies.

Loved all the different and angles of perspectives of Superman flying, in action, etc.

Really enjoyed the dynamic of Clark wondering where he's from, his parents and purpose while still being endearing and taking after his new parents.

Just saw it and will write a review later when it isn't 3am

I will answer this though:

They were pretty clear on it especially towards the end when Zod returns. They tried to gather more energy/materials that they triggered something int he core of Krypton and it was bound to blow up. Only JorEl and Zod believed this but the survival each offered differ. The codex is pretty much the dna of future kryptons and JorEl embedded it KalEls cells so his body is pretty much every living future Kryptonians. Krypton has also become a species that grows/harvest babies and sets their future for them while KalEl was made of traditional way, first in decades (or centuries?) and JorEl wanted him to grow up and have a choice in what he does instead of being assigned a job/future.

There really are some conflicting ideas there. Onone hand, JorEl wanted KalEl to be Krypton future and that is why he embedded the codex of every Kryptonians (and future Kryptonians) on him but in the end, it is about choice and Kal chose to side with the humans completely disregarding his purpose but his dad wanted him to make his own choices and in the end he did.

I might be just rambling on there, again it is 3am here so I apologize if that is confusing as hell.
.

Our Dept manager is taking his whole staff to see a 12:50PM IMAX showing today... Can't wait. Since I'm working from home today, going to take my 9 year old too.

Edit: nope. Clearly states above not you. This guy made a thread on that guy in general.
Why Reviews Matter For 'Man Of Steel'
Superman-300x199.jpg

The newest incarnation of Superman.

It’s hard out there for a superhero. On Thursday, fanboys spent the day refreshing the Rotten Tomatoes web site as the critic reviews for the new Superman movie, Man of Steel, rushed in. The site aggregates reviews from around the country and gives each film a score based on whether the reviews are positive or negative. At first it looked like the movie was getting great reviews but by the end of the day, the film had a 57 out of 100 earning it a dreaded icon of a squashed green tomato.

Reviews don’t always matter when it comes to big blockbusters. None of Michael Bay‘s Transformer movies have earned better than a 56 out of 100 yet the franchise has brought in $2.7 billion at the global box office.

But fans are closely watching the reviews for Man of Steel for a few reasons. First, the movie was executive produced by Christopher Nolan, a director known for the high quality of his work. Last year’s The Dark Knight Rises got an 87 and in 2008 The Dark Knight earned a 94 out of 100.

So Nolan’s association with the film heightens expectations for Man of Steel.

Second, the last time Warner Bros. attempted a Superman reboot, it didn’t go very well. In 2006 Superman Returns earned $391 million at the global box office but since studios only take home about half of the box office, that meant that the film didn’t cover its $270 million production budget.

But that movie earned a 75 out of 100 on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics now seem to be saying that the new movie is even worse.

Superman is such a beloved character that many fans are rooting for the film to be a hit. And it looks like the movie will have a strong opening weekend. Exhibitor Relations expects Man of Steel will top the box office this weekend with $115 million. But in a world where most superheroes are dealing with serious emotional scars, Superman’s pure goodness can be a tough sell.

And the film is opening on the heels of Iron Man 3 which has already earned $1.2 billion at the global box office. That film scored a 78 out of 100 on Rotten Tomatoes.

So the pressure is on for Superman. Audiences will have to love the film and it will have to earn at least $800 million to be considered a hit and to spawn the kind of franchise Warner Bros. is surely hoping for.

I guess I have differing reviews from what I've read in here so far.

My biggest gripe lies in plot structure/lack of character development. When I saw Snyder and Nolan on the bill, I guess I was expecting remarkable storytelling and character depth. The action is a given.

They did a remarkable job imo detailing the origins. The scenes on Krypton were powerful. Soon as he hits Earth however, everything turns to poop for me in the movie. Plot scenes and structure are all thrown off balance. Things are happening at light speed (no pun). Flashbacks aside, the scenes on Earth were just all scattered for me.

I guess I wanted more depth from the scenes where Clark wonders about his origins, his biological parents, and his purpose on our planet. For me, it was like Synder was like "here's 5 mins for him discover about Krypton, here's 6 mins to meet Jor-El, here's another 5.5 minutes to realize purpose...now lets hurry back to show how many building we can crash thru in Smallville" (A WHOLE LOT OF BUILDINGS btw ). Maybe im being a Dark Knight fanboy, but i thoroughly enjoyed how deep it delved into Joker and Bane (different directors, blah blah)...but with Zod, it was like "my sole purpose is to repopulate my people" and the scenes just kept beating that dead horse.

There's more I wanna discuss, but i'd ultimately veer into spoilers...so i'll save that.

Edit: Movie was way too sci-fi for me. It was like Battle: Los Angeles with Superman flying around.

2/5 for me.

^^ I think everyone expected a Dark Knight feel to the movie because Nolan had his name put in as producer...but to me this movie had Snyder all over it (Depending on who you are, that's a good or a bad thing). But to me, there is no way you make a Superman movie any way similar to a Batman movie. These guys are two different characters, with two different story lines, who at the end of the day kind of share the same morals.

The Superman storyline is a very difficult story to pull off in a movie, how else could you fit the origins of Krypton, young Clark Kent growing up with his abilities (Smallville) trying to figure out who Clark is, then a older Clark Kent learning about his home planet and learning who Kal-El is, oh and then add some kind of climactic scene that ties it all together? It's very difficult to pull off and I think they did a great job of pulling it all together and laying the foundation out for what can be a great franchise.
When Clark finds the space ship, and he finds those I guess they were "Hibernation" chambers with the skeletons inside of them...did any one else notice the empty one that was opened up?

Man of Steel Rakes in $21 Million Thursday Night

One of the most anticipated movies of the summer, Zack Snyder's reboot of the Superman franchise with Man of Steel, finally opened last night in North America with a lot of expectations about how well it might do in terms of giving Warner Bros. a chance to do for the DC Universe what Marvel Studios has been doing with their characters.

The action adventure got off to a strong start, bringing in an estimated $21 million last night, $9 million from midnight screenings and $12 million from an earlier Thursday 7 pm screening with tickets sold exclusively through Walmart.

For those wondering what that means for Man of Steel's weekend outlook, we can look at some comparisons.

For instance, last summer, Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises brought in $30.6 million in midnights and advance screenings on its way to a weekend take of $160.9 million, while the recent Iron Man 3 brought in $15.6 million in advance screenings even though that ended up doing better over the weekend to the tune of $174.1 million.

With Man of Steel falling somewhere in between, even with only $9 million from midnights, does bode well for it having a really strong opening weekend although the anticipation to see the movie might have driven a lot more people out at midnight and earlier to see the movie than usual.
