Gilbert Arenas to opt out at end of season; willing to take less for championship?

The ball is in the Wizards court (no pun), and they have shown that they are just as competitive without him in the lineup. Does he make this team better? Of course. This man owns DC. However, as we have seen EG has been a shrewd man when it comes to contract negotiations and player movement. He has been right on some additions and subtractions to the Wizards roster. Most Wizards fans have full-faith in Ernie to make the right decision. As I have said before, Caron Butler is the heart of the team....as he goes, so do the Wizards.

*on a side note, Jamison is a free agent this summer. I would like to see him remain in DC for the rest of his career. Another year or two of starting, then move back to the bench to be a 6th or 7th man. By then Blatche should be ready to get those starter minutes at either the 5 or 4. I think that Jamison still has another 5-6 good years left of being a productive scorer. He doesn't rely on athleticism, so that won't be an issue. He finds the most unorthodox ways to score, and that will only benefit him as he is getting older. He's a dude who can EASILY average double-figures in scoring for the rest of his career. Instant offense.

I think the point your missing is that Gil most importantly wants a chance to win a championship and he knows and sees that he cant get it done in DC with Butler, Jamison, and the rest of the role players.Especialy now with the Celtics having their big 3 in the eastern conference.

I think his feelings/ego is getting hurt because he sits front and center at the Verizon center and sees a team overachieving and WINNING in his absence(look at the team's W/L record when Gil shut it down for the season...well over .500 after starting 0-5). However, he'll most likely remain a Wizard(things can change, but that's my gut feeling). If EG feels like negotiations aren't heading in the direction that he wants then Gil will be dealtbefore the season is up. Again, the Wizards can MATCH ANY DEAL HE SIGNS (he's restricted)!! Anyways, he is damaged goods at this point, so the Wizardshave the upper-hand in all aspects of the contract negotiations. He isn't getting that max deal, because that would be stupid/unprescedented for a guycoming off 2 major knee surgeries to get a 90+ million dollar contract....EG ain't that stupid, and if a team is willing to give him that money up front, then I think that the Wiz should let him go....you don't know the type of player you will be getting coming off of major surgery on their knee. Especiallyfor a guy who relies on his quickness and lateral movement to attack the rim...

As far as the Celtics, they have looked kinda "mortal" in the past couple of games in losing to both the Bobcats and Wizards. The team to beat IMOis still the Pistons.....I refuse to drink that green Kool-Aid until the Celtics have gone through the West. The window of opportunity for the Celtics is verysmall seeing that all of their big 3 is in their 30's. Their future is kinda mortgaged, but they have that "win now" mentality....we'll seewhat happens....

Xtapolapacetl:
Kobe and Gilbert on one team? Are they going to play basketball with two balls at once next year?
Thank you, man. I was going to say something similar.

I know Arenas has a lot of fans, so this might get some heat, but I don't want him on the Lakers. I don't think he's the type of player that cansubmit to a team's specific dynamics and make-up. He plays... the way he plays. I'm an Iverson fan, but he's the same way. Coach says in practice,"Now this should result in a fast break opportunity, so and here's how we're going to turn that rebound into a fast break bucket. We're goingto start with the ball on one of the wings. We want the rebound to be collected, then passed out to a player running the sidelines, then hit the cutter in thecenter of the floor. If the rebound was collected in the center-line of the court, then you still pass it out to a player on the sidelines, and he's goingto pass it back to the center-line."

Players like Arenas, players that just play the way they play... period... they hear all this stuff in practice, then when they hit the floor and get therebound, and they see outlet players running on both sidelines, they keep the ball, and go all the way to the other end, pulling up for 3 or getting into thelane or just whatever. They just do what they want to do, not what's designed.

I'm not saying they're wrong, or that they're bad players; just saying, they're not conducive to the concept that a team already has in place. And we already have a concept, we already have a way we do things, and it works. COULD Arenas submit to what we already have going on if he came over? Yes, heCOULD; he has the ability. But do I think he would? No, personally, I don't. I'm not saying he'd be on some, 'Man, eff this. I do things myway' tip. He might put forth an effort to submit, but in the end, I don't think it would happen.

and thank you DoubleJs. Arenas has said multiple times that HE PLANS TO STAY IN WASHINGTON, he's just opting out so he gets more $$$ from the Wizards

Why do you think some of us Laker fans get the heat for some of the trade proposals
roll.gif

That's why people of NT think Laker fans are gullible.

if he opts out, that means hes NOT RESTRICTED.

he has a player option, that means he can stick around for his current contract, or OPT OUT. That doesn't make him a restricted free agent, it just meansthat washington has his bird rights, which gives them the right to pay him the MOST money, but that does not mean they can MATCH any teams offer and keep himon the team no matter what.

If Gil wants to leave, Washington has NO CONTROL over it.

I thought NYK fans were bad, look at these delusional Laker fans.

30 ppg + 30 ppg does not equal title contenders. Just look at the Denver Nuggets, they aren't winning a title any time soon.

Gilbert is going to get a huge contract, most athletes aren't willing to take less for a championship until they hit their mid-30s.

^ That ain't bad. Arenas and Haywood would be a good look for Houston. Haywood and Yao could be a nice C/PF combo like David Robinson and Tim Duncan was,except... nowhere near as talented.

And Arenas scores points, so that's solid offense.

And Tracy + Rafer is a good look for Washington, too.

Well, not so much Rafer actually. I'm not a big fan of him.

Hmmm... maybe that's not as good of a deal as I originally thought when I first looked at it.

I like how everyone keeps laughing at us Laker fans. Please. I just like saying "Do it Mitch" because I'm hoping one of these days he hears me.

We ain't stupid. That guy that offered Vlad, Mihm, and Sasha.........I can't speak for him.

Rafer is definitely not appealing, but the Wizards just need somebody to handle the point since Gilbert will be gone.

I mean, it'll be pick your poison with Antonio Daniels or Skip, but Skip is just a notch or two below average, and definitely a couple notches aboveDaniels.

PG - Skip
SG - T-Mac
SF - Caron
PF - Jamison
C - Blatche (gets his time to shine/sell Haywood 'high') and Etan Thomas as the backup next year.

PG - GA
SG - Head
SF - Battier
PF - Hayses/Scola
C - Yao/Haywood

Houston finally gets a real 'PG' and better yet, one that can hit the 3 ball consistently which is key with Yao in the middle. Dikembe's lastyear, and Haywood will fill in nicely as a backup to Yao.

DO IT MITCH!

LMAO, ya'll must be on crack rocks to think Arenas is going anywhere. DC made arenas i say.

If i recall, a certain player who wore number 0 said "you never turn down 12 million"

Gilbert's a 'quirky' dude, you never know.

This is the same guy who decided he was going to Washington instead of the Clippers by flipping a coin.

laugh.gif

What teams could he go to (that don't have a good PG), and put them at the top of the league? Cleveland? LA? Boston? Miami? I don't know. But then, howmany of those teams could pay Gil as they are now? And he plays NO D, so he can't play the combo-role and guard 2s. Even with a $3M salary cut, he'sclose to $10M a year after this year. Plus, throughout the course of his career, he's had to miss a LOT of games due to injuries (like his currentsituation). Where he goes, I hope they are on TV more next year, he's very FUN to watch.

To the Lakers fans:

After ALL of the BAD moves that the organization (won't name names, but I am LMFAO at Do It Mitch!) has made, you're just looking/hoping to come out ontop of one of them. I understand, keep hope alive and make sure you get a draft pick...

But it's funny, living here, everytime somebody comes up as trade-bait/possible free agent, I look at how they could help the Lakers. And I don't evenlike the Lakers. LOL People are still talking about how the Celtics stole KG from the Lakers. Yes, apparently the only reason Boston went out to get him wasbecause the Lakers were trying to get him first. LMFAO Gotta love a Laker Fan. Every move that happens in the NBA is to hurt the Lakers...

whoa, what?? i'm gonna assume you don't see the Wizards much, but Daniels is actually good. he led the league in assists/turnovers last year. he actually dropped 18 assists against i think the Nets. i can't believe you would even compare him to that bum Alston
laugh.gif

Daniels is good for what he is..

..a career backup type PG.

Daniels is definitely not better than Skip, IMO

Skip's numbers are scewed because the Rockets don't have a legit 3rd scorer, so he tries to do so much/takes so many 3 pointers because Yao gets doubleteamed a lot.

There's a reason why a playground street baller has gotten the starting gig on a number of teams, while Antonio Daniels rides the bench everywhere he goes.

Skip can run an offense.

AD is good coming off the bench, but not good enough to start anywhere really.

..unless it's by default through course of injury.

you ever seen the cover torn off a baseball? well if Gil and Kobe are on the same team, you will see a basketball straight torn in half

DC will pay him his asking price & the team will continue. Attendance is down this year, and its better for us to develop than change. Plus we got himhooked on mumbo sauce.
