University of British Columbia and Simon Frasor looking to join Division 2.

UBC was keen on joining Division 1 but the NCAA put a stop to new members until 2011, so the curent aim is D2.

couple more links

UBC, SFU, and UVic already compete officially in the NAIA in certain sports.

Im guessing the short spot i saw on tv was about official approval of the pilot program.

*EDIT* pilot program is approved.

whats wrong with that? there is a foreign team in the National Basketball Association, the NFL Super Bowl champs call themselves World Champions yet theydon't play a team outside the country

Haven't read the articles, so there may be something I'm missing, but if they can compete, more power to them.

I've alwyas wondered that too. why would they call themselves world champions when its only in US teams.

Damn could you imagine if when they become D1 and top recruits in America start going up to Canada for college and %@$+. But for a school not even D1 yet,it'll be a while until they can "steal" top recruits from the rest of the NCAA.

The only top recruit that would go to canada from the states, would be one with a drinking problem

The University of Alberta was approached by the NCAA to *eventually* become a Division 1 school, but U of A turned them down. The main reason being Canadianand American Universities have their sports going at different times, not to mention the differences in breaks.

Football and Basketball won't be very competetive. But I can assure you, we would more than hold our own in hockey and volleyball, as well as Track.

Although, you all probably don't care.

Depends on what sport. Volleyball and hockey are FAR better in Canada.

I dont think any football team outside of the US can compete with US teams, but basketball is a different story.

Well I didn't mean soon, but if these schools actually became a force in the NCAA some time down the road.

They are the world champs because if you are a foreigner and you are good enough to play professional football, you play in the NFL. You dont play in teams outin Europe. Thats why you see not as many Europeans in football but alot of African players have been coming in reccently. There are no nasty Europeans playingon foreign football teams...

This used to be the case in the NBA as well, but there are European teams that would wipe the floor with some NBA teams (Knicks) especially since theirOlympian success in the past. But i guess that MOST (not all) really good oreigners are in the league, so winning the NBA finals is like being world championsas well. All American leagues display the best of the best pretty much no matter where you're from, but basketball is begnning to turn around. I also thinkthere are better foreign hockey teams than NHL teams but im not sure.

my friend actually received a volleyball scholarship to texas tech. it's a wonder how they saw her considering where we're from.

UBC and SFU are trash at basketball and im guessing will get destroyed

Ive seen them play

Most of my school's volleyball team is Canadian.
yeah, that'll happen especially in states near the border.

im not sure if you're exaggerating but my one friend's NAIA softball (16 players) and volleyball teams (12 players) had 9 and 8 canadian playersrespective players repectively.

I think there should just be one or two universities that could represent the entire country in Division 1 Athletics..

The University of Canada.

or

University of Canada West and University of Eastern Canada.

UBC and SFU are trash at basketball and im guessing will get destroyed
SFU is garbage this year, but UBC is consistently one of he best teams in the CIS (which isnt saying much.) But Carlton has that whole half decadedomination thing going on.

If UBC went D1 it would almost certainly allow the Thunderbirds to monopolize the best athletes in the nation.

I got offered a full ride at Long Beach and a partial scholarship to UCLA .... but being Canadian, they can only cover half tuition for your firstyear. I definitely couldn't afford that,. so I chose a school closer to home. But yes, scholarships are hard to come by. Women's volleyball is alotmore popular, and alot easier for them to get on a NCAA Div 1 team.

Just for comparison, a community college from a city of 40,000 went down to BYU 4 years ago, who was ranked number 2 in the US at the time, and beat them 3sets to 1. This is a team that plays in a league BELOW CIS.
