2008 Australian Open

Good for Djokovic. He fought real hard and deserved the win. Good for him! I'm real happy for this dude. Only 20 years old too. Should be an excitinigfinal. I see Tsonga taking it if he plays anything like he did in the previous match.

Go Tsonga.

DAMN. I'm the tennis version of fr3sh for jinxing federer. sorta

was kinda glad it was over since i didnt wanna stay up any longer. djokovic looked pretty good, but i still can't stand him-it's sort of like thejoakim noah thing in a way. i'm rooting for tsonga

really tho, roger was bound to lose one. i think he will come back strong after this. he just didn't have his shot today and djokovic played really well

^
Agreed. I think Roger will come back with more resolve and a crisper game next time around.

I'll definitely be rooting for Tsonga.

We all know Roger will get revenge and unleash his anger when French Open rolls around.

And damn, it seems like I'm the only guy rooting for Djokovic here, lol.

Gotta give Djokovic a lot of credit. I really thought Federer would find a way to break in the 12th game of the third set. Novak really kept his composure andserved extremely well. I was on the fence on who was going to win heading into the match, but I didn't expect a straight set victory for either end.Federer just didn't look good in the first 2 and a half sets, and Novak had a lot to do with that. Roger looked really slow, but that's mostly becauseNovak was anticipating Roger's punches and that really deprived Roger of the time he needed to line up his shots. Djokovic's serving was out of thisworld. He was hitting lines with regularity, and more importantly, he came up with the goods when he really needed it. After Djoko forced the tiebreak it wasliterally over. The first set was obviously key, but not breaking Djoko in his opening game of the third set was vital.

Seeing a non-Nadal and Federer final isn't really a surprise, but Djokovic and Tsonga? The names may be unfamiliar but I expect a heck of a match. If Jocan win the title I'll defintaely be on board the bandwagon. If Novak can win, it may potentially start a new stage in men's tennis (a la Roger winningWimbledon in '03).

My head is hurting I need some sleep...
Can't wait for Sunday's finals. Like Gordon said if Tsonga plays like he did against Nadal then Tsonga will def. win.

HOLY +#%+! Gotta be honest I'm pumped for Djokovic, even made a post about him a few pages back. I'm hoping he takes this...

I didn't stay up for this match because I barely slept the night before. I can't wait for the replay.
Last night I said that I hoped Djokovic would win because I wanted to see him up against Tsonga. Thinking about it now, though, Djokovic has the momentum oftaking down Federer on his side. Tsonga has Nadal momentum, but does he stand a chance? We'll see. I'm definitely excited about this final, but maybeall the craziness of this tournament has fizzled out. There have been a lot of upsets, and it's been a great slam. Maybe we'll wish the semis had beenthe finals.
Come on, Tsonga. I have faith in him, especially if he plays the way he did against Nadal. I've kept an eye on him for a while, but it's been hardsince he hasn't made it very far into any slam. I'm glad I've finally gotten to see him play enough to be able to say conclusively that I do lovehis game. As much as I like Djokovic I have to root for Tsonga.
And of course I'm excited to see Maria Sharapova humiliate Ana.

^ Yeah, when's the replay?! I had no freaking idea 'till I just caught SportsCenter a second ago after putting my son down for a nap.

WOW, man!!!

P.S.

@ KLJ's 'He's getting out-Federered!'

I fell asleep sometime in that third set; that's how confident I was that Fed was getting straight-setted.

He's washed up!

I'm not ready to send him to the pine with Andy just yet.

I'm not a Djokovic fan at all, but the fact that "Federer losing" is the focus of the news and not "Djokovic wins" is a bitdisappointing. With all the excuses and explanations that could be made for Federer's loss, it really does devalue Novak's win which is a pity.

Thinking about tonights women's final, I really don't see any way Ivanovic can contain Maria. Ana has been really shaky the past couple matches andMaria has obviously been dominating.

I hope Tsonga destroys Djokovic in the final. There's no other player in tennis I hate more than Djokovic. The antics his parents pull off makes YuriSharapov look like a saint.

Yuri is a piece of work. Dude's crazy but I think that Ivanovic has a legit shot tonight. If she can get that forehand working she could. As for Tsonga Ilike his swagger and I think he has a good shoot to win.

I didn't realize Fed had a viral infection, and if anybody has tried to play sports with one it's miserable. I can definitely see how this would'veslowed him down a bit...

I could be typing forever listing all the stuff they've done through the years. During matches, don't let anyone cheer against Djokovic in thematch. Everytime someone around them cheers for Djokovic's opponent they'll yell at the fans and stare them down. It's like they expect everyone tobe cheering for Novak. It happens every single match, not just certain ones. Also during matches his parents will stare down Novak's opponents when theyare on the same side of the court where their box is located.

Two years ago at match against Federer, Roger called out Djokovic on his use of injury timeouts whenever he was losing. It wasn't a one time incident withNovak, he was doing this all the time and players were getting annoyed so Roger decided to call him out on it. Once it happened, Djokovic's parents went tothe media and said Roger was scared of Novak since Novak was better than him. Then after Roger beat Djokovic at the US Open final the first thing his parentsdid was go to the media and tell them Novak is better than Roger.

Federer did have some infection from some bad chicken before the Kooyong warm-up tournament leading up to the Aussie Open. His last competitive match was inthe year-ending Master's Event and also those exhibitions against Sampras (I'm betting Pistol Pete may have had something to do about the bad poultry, conspiracy??). Anyways, he wasn't able to prepare like he wanted, and the fact McEnroe even mentioned Roger doing conditioning and footwork drills on a dayduring the tournament was not a good sign. Federer rarely works on any of those things during a tournament which means he probably didn't feel as preparedas past tournaments. It was also a sign that could be seen in his matches after the first 2 rounds. Even Carillo noticed that Federer was reaching for someshots, rather than quickly getting to the spot, using that good footwork and hitting solid strokes.
With all that said, he was still up a break in the firstset and he still showed great resiliency in the third. He was on the court, ready to play and he lost to the better player. It happens in sports.

I remember that so vividly. In 2006, during the USO,he'd be calling injury timeouts, looking like he may retire the match, then he'd get up and start blasting his opponents like he got a B-12 shot. Hedid it so much in the early round on the outer courts. Matches would be extended by about 30 minutes because of all the stoppages in play. He won a couple ofthose matches, and from that point I never really liked him. He was basically using the rules of the game to compensate for his lack of training during theoffseason. Not a good look.

And make no mistake, Nadal and Federer hate Djokovic. They're just too nice to say anything, but you can tell the tension is there. I just hope Federer canactually be driven by that. With all the glory in Federer's game, his biggest weakness is his mental toughness. The only reason he's been so great thepast couple years is that he's so good on the court, that no one really can challenge him or push him to the point where the mental aspect of the gamecomes into play. Now, he's been pushed and he needs to learn to step up. IMO, he will never be like the great athletes in others sports because he wiltsunder the mental pressure. It's happened so many times at Roland Garros. Hopefully he can overcome that, even if that means he starts to become, dare Isay, "a mean guy."

I thought people didn't appreciate tennis anymore. I'm glad I clicked next instead of making another useless thread.

Sharapova beating Ivanovic tonight. What yall think?

I also gotta say this: YES! YES! YES! BYE FEDERER!!!

some good quality tennis from both girls thus far... Shriekapova's looked tough all tourney, but I'm pulling for Ivanovic...

I don't think he is the GOAT yet, but he probably can/will be in the future. The guy's game is that good.
