T-Mac a reluctant All-Star
Tracy McGrady, second among Western Conference guards in All-Star voting, said Thursday he would like to give his spot to a more deserving player. That, however, is not an option the NBA allows.
"Any time you are chosen to become an All-Star, especially having had the season I've had, there's other guys definitely having better seasons than me," McGrady said. "If it was my choice, I would select another guy to participate in my spot because I see other guards that are having outstanding seasons."

Players who are able to play prior to the All-Star Game, which takes place Feb. 17 in New Orleans, are required to play in the game.

Wow, very interesting, but would Stern allow him to do that?

If so, that could shake up the roster a whole lot.

If Tracy gets out, I don't know what happens, will Nash get in because Stern chooses him? Will the third best vote-getter get in? (who happens to be AI?)Will be interesting.

Regardless, props to Tracy for real talk.

Good move, T-Mac.

Though, I don't think David Stern will alow it.

Only thing to do really is if he says he's injured, and just doesn't participate.

Someone remind me of the Vince Carter/MJ All Star substitution thing from like '02 or whenever it was.

Was it just that both were already selected to play, but Vince was supposed to start? So he gave up his starting spot to Jordan so that he could start hisfinal ASG?

You have to respect that he is making this decision.

He could have been ignorant and just played in the game but he didn't.

I was thinking the exact same thing when I read the thread title. I guess T-Mac can give his starting spot to someone else more deserving. I'm not sureif it would free up an extra reserve spot for another player though.

This has actually been discussed before. Stern's not going to allow it unless he really is injured. And to sorta "prove" he's injured,he'd have to miss a game or two before or after the all-star break. If Houston is on the verge of getting somewhere in the standings and T-Mac ISN'Tactually injured, do you think the rockets would just let him miss a game for that reason...? Doubt it.

This has come up in past all-star games 'cause a lot of players would prefer to just sit out and relax and heal. But Stern obviously wants them to be inthe game. If you could get by on the injury excuse, a lot more players would be declining their invite. There have been a number of players in the past whohave stated they didn't care for the game and didn't even want to be there.

Houston's not going anywhere anyways, all he has to do is like a poster said, miss a few games prior to the All Star break which would be good for himbecause he really is injured and probably isn't terribly excited about playing in the game, and remember what he said about New Orleans and security. Hecan be with his wife in Hawaii or something instead

True, but in this case, T-Mac has been out for like 2-3 weeks already, and it's been reported he might be out for who knows how long. He mighteven be out until the All-Star break, anyway.

Jordan was the reserve behind Carter that game in 2003. Before the game, Carter gave Jordan his spot for starting. Both were already all stars, but Carter let MJ start. If McGrady does something similar, it would be to a bench player I assume.

He'll probably just be there since he was voted, but won't play because of injury. I'd imagine the 3rd-leading vote-getter, who would probably bean All-Star anyways, will start, and someone else gets picked as a reserve due to injury.
