T-Mac: "I'd like to give up my All-Star spot to someone more deserving"

I've been saying this to myself all along even though T-Mac is one of my favorite players. He should at least be able to give up the starting spot tosomeone more deserving.

it's not unprecedented.

doug collins stepped aside for john havlicek's last all-star game as well.

and in 1992, magic johnson was voted in as a starter by fans (he retired just before the season, nov. 1991).

the west played with 13 players that game, both magic and the 13th man voted in by coaches (tim hardaway) got to play.

i remember watching that game on tv..

west won, 153-113. magic was mvp, hitting two 3s on mike in the last mins.

after magic swished his last 3 from about 40 feet away and some seconds left to go, the players from both benches all came and gave him a group hug. the lastbuzzer never sounded.

I hated how everyone voted Vince into the All Star game that yr then bullied him into giving his spot up to MJ saying he didn't deserve. Should'vevoted for Jordan then%#+$*@%%!$

why would he give up his spot? ppl are VOTING him in. who cares who is more "deserving". i want to see tmac in the ASG pulling form half, dunking andcrossing fools liek he usualyl does. leave the rest to the coaches.

^ K-Mart is one of the top 5 2-guards in the league, get outta' here with that.
KB
Wade
Carter
R. Allen
Ginobli
McGrady
Rip
Redd
Johnson
Richardson

but Martin as a top 10 SG is much more reasonable

Pretty much.

It's a noble thought and all. But just because most of YOU guys all of a sudden hate T-Mac or think he's unworthy of a spot b/c his stats don'tmatch up, all of the other fans who voted for him would basically be getting the shaft.

Stern won't allow this for the simple fact that he'd be setting an ugly precedent. Cuz now every year some player who YOU guys or the media feelshouldn't be on the team will be pressured to "give up his spot" to someone more deserving.

No. You get voted on, you play. Whether you're putting up CRAZY stats or not doesn't matter. Those are the rules and have always been the rules. Changethe rules if it's not working under the current set-up (which they should).

Secondly, why are dudes bringing up this whole "T-Mac is scared to play there" business. He made those comments LAST YEAR. I'm sure heunderstands that there would be no safety issues at this point. I guess T-Mac was also scared to play in Atlanta when he offered to give up his spot to Jordanfor the 93 ASG too huh?

There have been a number of players in the past who have stated they didn't care for the game and didn't even want to be there.

Name some.

This isn't the NFL or MLB. As far as I know damn near every NBA player loves going to the events and/or playing in the game. Dudes like Damon Jones, DrewGooden, Caron Butler, etc are there even if they aren't voted to play or participate.

Maybe wade, redd, jianlian (chinese votes), shaq, dampier and ben wallace should follow his example > tmac.

PS - Vote for Rip!

If Stern was smart, he'd let TMac off the hook and pick either Chris Paul or Steve Nash to run the point for the West.

like some people said he's scared to go to the N.O. I remember him saying something about it last year after the Pac-man thing

I agree, and the NBA's All-Star game is the most entertaining event in all of American sports events other than championship games. Just the atmosphere ofhaving the time off and hanging out with other players and not being competitive/serious and having a good time. Check out Shaq/Howard last year at the VegasASG. It's just a good time out.

And Kevin Martin isn't one of the top five SG's in the L, he can be in the future, but not yet, too much talent.

Plenty of guys look forward to that time off to go to Cabo, Cancun, Aruba, etc... and enjoy those 4-5 days to rest....... Trust me, plenty of guys detest going(usually perennial all-stars)... IE Karl Malone...... Sheed has spoken against it as well this year......

It's easy to offer the spot up knowing that it's not a possibility.
