This guy should go into the Hall of Fame first ballot. I had the opportunity to meet him when we were students at Purdue and he was a very classy individual. Iwish him all the best in retirement and hope we see him in the booth soon!

Rathman was very talented, but I don't feel he approached Alstott in terms of overall impact on games.

Rathman had 2020 yds. rushing w/26 TDs, 2684 yds. receiving w/8 TDs, no Pro Bowl or All Pro selections.

Alstott had 5088 yds. rushing w/58 TDs, 2284 yds. receiving w/13 TDs, 6 Pro Bowl selections (all starter), and 4 All-Pro selections.

No comparison.

Mike Alstott to retire vol. Greatest fullback ever
I don't know about all that champ. I know the dude above me posted stats leading folks to believe that Alstott is better than Rathman andmaybe he is, but Alstott was by far a main weapon for his offense while Rathman didn't have to be the go to guy all the time cause the 49ers have plenty ofgo to guys on offense.

i like dude he use to run people over like it was nothing. but dude was NOT a fullback he couldnt be a lead blocker to save his life

Im not a Niners fan and I would venture to say...Its Rathman...

As stated.. he didn't have the numbers because of all the others on his teams... But go ask his QB and Running Backs....and they will let ya know...

I still hate him for that supposed 2 point conversion he had against us in 2005. He called it the "greatest play of my life."

You know damnwell your elbow was down, not to mention it wasn't offsides on the blocked extra point prior to that, I Tivo'd that and ran it back frame by frame.

Yes I'm still bitter

On the real though, Alstott was a monster. If it was 3rd and 1, you knew the Bucs were giving it to him, and he still got it EVERY time.

I completely respect all of your opinions and do not argue that Rathman was not a good player; I actually liked him as a player. He was hard-nosed andopened holes for Roger Craig, allowing him to have a great career.

However, he never went to the Pro Bowl. Ever. He was never voted to an All-Pro team. Ever. I think it's hard to make a case for a player being the bestever when he was never even recognized as being the best in a single season at his position.

LOL If you think Alstott is getting in first ballot you are dreaming...He's a fullback.

And he's not close to the best "fullback" ever either IMO. But he does have the sexy stats yes.

Obviously nice career, never liked seeing my teams playing against the guy

@ the thought of him being a fullback.

Most fallacious thread title ever.

Wiki Alstott
When you are a running back and there is another running back lined up behind you (Warrick Dunn, Michael Pittman),you are designated a fullback.

For further information, please consult the NFL official home page where he is clearly identified as a fullback:

Alstott was a beast, but he definitely wasn't a protoypical fullback. whether that ends up keeping him out of the HOF, i don't know

I never said he was, and that is what makes him special. He revolutionized the position by forcing defenses to have to defend his running and pass-catchingabilities while also game-planning to stop the tailback, all while maintaining his ability as a punishing blocker in both the run and pass game.

Ur kidding right?
Dude couldnt block a lick.
he fumbled ALLLLL the time.

Dont let chris berman and his silly sound effects fool you.
Ive seen him miss cut block on MLBs on ISos (btw who da %@@+ does that! ) for Warrick Dunn and get Dunn Killed

I figured he would finally retire he had a lot of surgeries on his neck had to be painful. It would probably get worse if he would try to to continue to play. One of the greatest running fullbacks the NFL has had.
