What are the odds Jose Calderon actually makes the All Star team?

If Hell Freezes over, Canada beats the USA in a war, and pigs fly...then Maybe Jose Calderon would make the NBA All Star game, but probably not.

Jose Calderon wouldn't even make the NBDL all star game. Randy Livingston >> Jose Calderon.

Stein Line's All-Star Reserves

By Marc Stein

(Archive)

This is exactly how the coaches do it.

As instructed on ballots that went out Friday, coaches in each conference have been asked to vote for seven reserves -- excluding their own players, of course -- for the All-Star Game in New Orleans on Feb. 17. The list of seven players is to be comprised of two forwards, two guards, one center and two wild cards, with each coach ranking his choices from one to seven to give each vote a point value ... but also with the invitation to ignore the positions at which players are listed on the official All-Star ballot if they wish.

Forwards: Caron Butler (Wizards), Paul Pierce (Celtics)

Guards: Chauncey Billups (Pistons), Jose Calderon (Raptors)
Billups, again, would have been one of my starters had I actually punched a ballot -- placed ahead of Dwyane Wade because of the depths of Miami's for-the-ages collapse. Then there's Calderon, who probably deserved at least a starter's mention in the last Weekend Dime. He's been even more efficient than the economical Chauncey. How efficient? The Spaniard, not a bad bargain himself at just $2.5 million a season, has averaged 13.8 points, 9.9 assists and just 1.8 turnovers in his 28 starts while shooting 50.7 percent from the floor, 43.4 percent on 3s and 91.2 percent from the line.
All of which helps explain why Toronto hasn't nose-dived without T.J. Ford and why Raps general manager Bryan Colangelo was moved to thank predecessor Rob Babcock on Chad Ford's weekly podcast
listen.gif
for bringing Calderon over. Praise for Babcock, remember, is not exactly Toronto tradition.
3707.jpg
Center: Chris Bosh (Raptors)
I know (and I agree): It's not really All-Star Weekend without Shaquille O'Neal. But Shaq will be in New Orleans and I suspect we'll see plenty of the Big LSU. So there's no need for East coaches to vote Shaq in on a lifetime achievement basis, especially when he's not even healthy to play. East coaches, furthermore, don't have to fudge at all to vote for Bosh. The lefty indeed plays plenty of center for the Raps and the rules, as noted above, allow coaches to vote for players at the position "most advantageous for the All-Star team" and "not necessarily the one he plays most often during the season." So Bosh is clearly the best fit here, especially because he's gradually getting healthier and more dominant and with Rasheed Wallace urging the coaches to evaluate him on purely statistical terms. Which would ensure that Sheed gets to stay home all weekend.

Wild Cards: Antawn Jamison (Wizards), Rip Hamilton (Pistons)
There are only five 20-and-10 guys in the entire league and Jamison, as the other chief catalyst in Washington's gritty Arenas-less run, is one of them. Yet there are actually several contenders for the last spot on the roster in spite of the East's ongoing ability to disappoint us as a group: Hedo Turkoglu, Joe Johnson, Gerald Wallace and two of our favorite lefties -- Michael Redd and Josh Smith -- all have a case.

The traditional Stein Line tiebreaker, though, naturally led us to make a team-success choice between a second Piston (Hamilton over Sheed) and a third Celtic (Allen). And Rip prevails. As much as I'd like seeing Boston's entire trio of prominence prominence (don't want to offend anyone by calling them anything more) on the All-Star stage, even Ray would have to concede that Rip has been sharper for a fellow 30-game winner.

The Line's 1-to-7 East Order:
1. Billups, 2. Butler, 3. Pierce, 4. Bosh, 5. Calderon, 6. Jamison, 7. Hamilton

Caught what? Hollinger is pushing for Calderon to make it as well.

Men lie, women lie but numbers don't. Caldy is a stud.

Its also good for the league if he makes it. Seems like there aren't any first-time all-stars this year. It'll be a good look.

NIMFH seems to know what he's talking about (one of the few in this thread) a whole lot more than the 'tards posting up emoticons

all star selection is a popularity contest and he isn't necessarily flashy, brash or gets the attention of the media that many of his nba counterpartsreceive (gilbert arenas? vince carter? shaq? dwayne wade? tmac? amare stoudamire?)

his points per game hold him back a bit, but his shooting percentage and assist numbers have been pretty good especially since he's been given light aftertj ford's injury.

he's a highly underrated point guard who's contributed to a lot of the raptor's success in the last three months, but as usual goes under the radarbecause of extraneous reasons that don't have much to do with the actual game.

i think he should have been considered for the reserve team at the very least.

his chances are better than people think
even NBA.com thinks he should be there

SECAUCUS, NJ, January 24, 2008 -- With tonight's announcement of the starters for the 2008 All-Star Game in New Orleans, it'sobviously time to think about who the seven reserves should be for each conference. That's exactly what the coaches will be doing over the next couple ofdays, and the results of their voting will be announced next Thursday night on TNT.

John Schuhmann gives you his selections for the Western Conference

The East is in good hands with the five starters the fans voted in. Jason Kidd, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James,Kevin Garnett and DwightHoward should bring the firepower necessary to make three wins in four years wellwithin the reach of the boys reppin' the Right Coast. I'm curious to see if the big-man duo of KG and Dwight actually bring the defense to the table (ararity in All-Star games) and the inclusion of Kidd ensures that everybody will get their touches. (If Kidd takes two shots the whole game, it will be one toomany.)

When picking the reserves, the only rule is you need need to choose two guards, two forwards and one center. After that, there are two wildcard spots andyou can fill them with any position.

The Guards

Chauncey Billups, Detroit (30-13)
17.9 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 7.1 APG

chauncey_billups.jpg
He's the motor that keeps the Pistons within strikingdistance of the Celtics atop the Eastern Conference. After not making the mid-season classic for the first eight years of his career, it should be thethird-straight selection for Mr. Big Shot.

Jose Calderon, Toronto (23-19)
12.1 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 8.5 APG

jose_calderon.jpg
Calderon gets the honor of being my only selection that will be afirst-time All-Star. There are a variety of reasons of why Calderon is deserving (starting with his ridiculous 5.4 assist-turnover ratio and including hisattaining the holy trio of percentages with 50-40-90), but the most impressive thing he's done is play Lou Gehrig to T.J. Ford's Wally Pipp. Since Ford went out on December 11 with a neck injury, Calderon has led theRaps to a 11-9 record while upping his points and assists averages to 14.5 and 9.3, respectively.

Three Hardest Guard Snubs

Tragic Shaft: Richard Hamilton (DET)
Maybe Next Year: Ray Allen (BOS)
Team Record Hurt You: Joe Johnson (ATL)
The Forwards

Caron Butler, Washington (22-18)
21.5 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 4.3 APG

caron_butler.jpg
The Wizards started the season 0-5, Gilbert Arenas was sidelined with knee surgery and Washington's playoff hopes were supposedto be forgotten about like we all pretend to forget that '80s fashion ever happened. Right? Wrong. Butler transformed from a capable dance partner into theleading man. He stamped his ticket to N'awlins with inspired play (18.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals) in back-to-back wins against Boston on January 12th and 14th.

Paul Pierce, Boston (33-7)
20.4 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 5.0 APG

paul_pierce.jpg
What All-Star team would be complete without the leading scorer on theteam with the NBA's best record? The Celtics' 33-7 start has to be particularly satisfying for Pierce who has spent all of his 10 seasons in Boston andhas experienced it all, from the highs of making the Eastern Conference Finals in 2002, to the lows of being injured for most of 2006-07 and seeing his squadland in the lottery.

Three Hardest Forward Snubs

Tragic Shaft: Josh Smith (ATL)
Maybe Next Year: Hedo Turkoglu (ORL)
Team Record Hurt You: Richard Jefferson (NJN)
The Center

Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Cleveland (23-18)
13.5 PPG, 9.5 RPG, 1.2 APG

zydrunas_ilgauskas.jpg
Brett Farve isn't the only pro athlete to experience arenaissance this year. The 7-3 Big Z is averaging more rebounds per game than he has in any other season of his 10-year career and his .481 field goalpercentage, coupled with his .824 rate from the foul line, gives LeBron James a trustedtarget to pass to. Ilgauskas has quietly had a stellar career, as this would be his fourth All-Star selection.

Three Hardest Center Snubs

Tragic Shaft: Rasheed Wallace (DET)
Maybe Next Year: Emeka Okafor (CHA)
Team Record Hurt You: Andrew Bogut (MIL)
The Wildcards

Chris Bosh, Toronto (23-19)
22.2 PPG, 9.2 RPG, 2.2 APG

chris_bosh.jpg
No, I'm not just taking Bosh because he dressed up like a Texas car salesman and told me to. CB4 earns the nod for ushering in a newera of successful basketball to Toronto post VC15. You can pencil in 20 and 10 next to his name in the scorebook every night, but you might have to use theeraser once in a while and double the numbers as Bosh has three 40-point games so far this season and grabbed 19 rebounds once as well.

Antawn Jamison, Washington (22-18)
21.3 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 1.6 APG

antawn_jamison.jpg
Jamison's 24 double-doubles put him second only to Dwight Howard in the Eastern Conference and eighth overall in the NBA. The 10-year vet isaveraging more than 20 points and 10 rebounds for the first time in his career and is also sixth amongst all Eastern Conference forwards in three-pointers madewith 66.

^ its Zo Dogg, dont actually take him seriously. Talks like a 16 year old with a chip on his shoulder when really he is tripple that age...

Anyway, Jose has played well enough to deserve a spot, but IMO he wont get in. The all star game goes to those big name players, like Billups, Ray, Rip, etc...
Does Jose deserve to be in the game? Absolutely.
Will Jose play in the game? Most likely not.

IMO Jose has a much better chance at being the MIP for the year than getting in the all star game.

Something I have noticed (and im not surprised), that Chris Bosh really only gets any... media coverage i guess you could say. I totally understand; a team inCanada, a team that traded their superstar three years back, a team of European players. Alot of players for the Raps dont get the coverage by the media thatother players with the same cailber get. Well, in a sense I mean. Players like Anthony Parker, Jose Calderon, Carlos Delfino, etc, are very good players whonobody really notices. Does it bother me a little? Not really. I guess thats kind of how I view why Jose wont get in the game.

Oh, and this...

If Hell Freezes over, Canada beats the USA in a war, and pigs fly...then Maybe Jose Calderon would make the NBA All Star game, but probably not.

So just to sum up then, the day Jose Calderon makes the all star team is the day the Suns dont choke in the playoffs, and win a championship.

Wow that guy thinks Calderon is a better pure PG than Chris Paul? I'm in shock. And no Calderon won't make the team and he shouldn't. He is a greatrole player and that's it.

I can't believe somebody said that Andre Miller wasn't on Jose level? You must be kidding me, Jose does have a way better range than Miller but if wetalking about PG play I'd rather have Miller. Put Jose in Miller's position with the 76ers and you'll see how good of a PG he is. He's good inToronto because of the playing style but if his role was to control the whole floor he wouldn't flourish.

Not a chance in hell, but, dude is one of the most underrated players in the game.

Probably the best PG nobody really knows about.

Dude has an effecient game. Doesn't force up shots, shoots a great % as a result, and throws out dimes like it's nothing.

A PG's, PG.

12PPG, 8.6APG.

Shoots 51% from the field, 92% from the stripe and 43% from 3pt land.

Calderon > More than half the league's PG's, no doubt.
