It seems like most people in general equate leaping ability with athleticism. I don't really get this though. Athleticism to me is more than justleaping ability. It should factor in someone's speed, quickness, agility, body control, strength, etc. Case in point, people saying Vince Carter/JasonRichardson is/was more athletic than somone like Kobe Bryant or Allen Iverson. Vince Carter is/was a better leaper than Kobe Bryant. That's about it. Kobeis quicker, faster, stronger, more agile and has better body control. Yet it seems like it's generally accepted here that Vince is more athletic.Iverson isquicker, faster, more agile and probably has about the same vertical leap as J-Rich, but I think most people here would say J-Rich is/was more athletic.

Yes and no... it's like squares and rectangles.

square = hops
rect. = athleticism

A superb athlete with no hops... hmm...how about STEVE NASH for starters? Dude runs on duracells

thats a tossup..... Vince had and still has ridiculous body control.. We just don't see it as much now because he's more of a jump shooter now and hisknees aren't what they used to be. A perfect example is his dunk over Zo in 2006.....

This is basketball. There are many athletically gifted people that when you give them a basketball and try to do the same things they look like goofballs.

Rodney Carney is someone I would say is incredibly athletic, but I'm not so sure basketball is his best outlet for his talents. I've run with guys thatcould catch alley oops from anywhere, but they could hardly dunk on their own dribbling a basketball.

Great example. I was trying to come up with someone who is generally not known to be "athletic" and I didn't remember Nash.

Oh, I naturally assumed you meant in the realm of basketball. There's an infinite number of athletic ppl that have never even tried to play ball.

Son are you on drugs?

Kobe more athletically gifted than Vincent Carter? JRich more athletically gifted than A. Ezail Iverson? What is this? Seriously...what is this?

I'm saying Kobe is more athletic than Vince, IMO. And AI is more athletic than J-Rich, IMO. My point was there is more to being athletic thanhaving insane hops.

James White is very athletic. He pretty much crafted his jumping ability with track. He was a high and long jumper. Same with Carney

Yea athleticism deals with a lot of other aspects, but most people associate it with hops. Usually it's the first way to tell if someone is athletic. Theydon't bother to look into it more

Perfect example.

hops does not equal athleticism. i played a dude in basketball who could jump through the roof, but had the worst coordination

^ thats a good point. people dont realize that coordination is a big part in athleticism. i know dude who can jump through the roof but cant do a between thelegs dunk

Coordination is a big part of it but I think that finding people with hops and without coordination is the exception and not the rule.

By and large, if you have hops, you are probably athletic; to what degree, however, is debatable.

^ Exactly; certain things are a PART of athleticism.

Coordination is a PART of athleticism, but if you have excellent coordination, but you run slow as heck, you can't jump for crap, and you're 100 poundsover weight, I doubt anyone's going to say, "Oh, man... he has such great athleticism because of his coordination!"

It's the same with hops; that ONE THING is one of MANY things that go into the word 'athleticism'.

Dunno if you saw the article or not about touching the top of the backboard, but somebody in one of those links was quoted as saying White could qualifyfor the Olympics in high jumping right now with almost no training... that he's already just that gifted a jumper. To not call him an athlete is a bitcrazy.

Here's the thing - athleticism is much more raw than some of you guys are treating it - when it all boils down to it, there's only two real measures ofathleticism - that's power and quickness.
The two things that generally determine if you're a superb athlete are your short sprinting distance time, and your leaping ability... and they tend to gohand in hand, because they both use a lot of the same fast twitch fibers in your legs. You won't find too many slow guys that can jump insane heights..you won't find many sprinters that can't also jump pretty well.

So in general - if you have hops, you are athletic.
