STAY/GET BACK IN SHAPE VOL 3.0 -- A New Niketalk = A New Thread

Thanks Stuntman Mike. Just curious, as you dealt with it, how cautious were you? Did you juts cut down on the # of days/volume or did you more attempt to work around it? I'd like to give it a run next week after time off to see how it reacts after the inflammation goes down

both sides got to the point where i couldn't do certain exercises without being in excruciating pain. even little things like carrying groceries to the car would hurt. as far as the healing process, i stopped going to the gym until it didn't hurt doing day-to-day stuff. then i started the stretches and wrist curls and when that stopped being painful, i went back to lifting and would stop doing any exercise if the sharp pain came on. eventually it would only be a mild pain and finally, i'm pain-free. if i didn't try to work through the pain in the first place, healing would have gone a lot quicker i'm sure

my reps are getting up there

all i do is compound work these days, then i usually end with a heavy rep......so like 405 deadlift and 275 incline this week, thats at the very end of working sets when im usually fatigued an i do like 1-3 reps, my goal isnt strength but more endurance an athletism these days

315 deadlifts for 15 reps and incline bench 225 for 15 reps this week, ill do legs saturday i gotta play basketball friday night

i coulda went for more but im working my way up

i weight exactly 200 on the mark these days, i plan to lose 8-10 more lbs, no winter bulking for me this year

supplements are just hydrowhey right now

Do you or any of the big boy squatters in here have any tips for keeping your hips happy after/during heavy squats?
Can't remember the name, but essentiall side lunges.

I also like jump squats, anderson squats, and leg rotations. Also more squatting.

Anyone dealt with tennis elbow or elbow discomfort? Have given myself the week off from lifting to see how it reacts.

I get elbow discomfort from certain exercises like DB Tricep Overhead Extensions... I usually just roll the area that's sore with a lacrosse ball, and I'm good to go.

Finally quit being a little b**** and scheduled my CSCS exam.  Also gonna get my USA Track & Field Level 1 cert (looks good on paper), trying to decide btwn the infamous FMS (functional movement screen) cert or the CES (corrective exercise specialist) cert. Also a nutrition cert, look at Precision Nutrition.  Then i'm done with certs unless a school will pay for me to take the SCCC.  Only ones I have right now are my USAW and the NSCA-CPT.

I know certs don't mean jack when u don't know what your doing but I have a master's, over a year of D1coaching experience and a former D1 athlete so i'm just trying to put together a nice resume.  Just need to get this violation expunged of my record (reason I had to leave my first D1 coaching job) and I should be good.

@Durden7
have u ever thought abt being a team SC? Thinking about exploinetring the private sector with this "time off" to decide if I like it better.

Ive thought about team strength and conditioning, but the issue I have with things like that is the job is essentially adult babysitting. We all have an interest is exercise/fitness and for someone whos interested in the field of S&C theres obviously a high interest in that type of fitness, but when you work in that field not everyone has the same passion. Youll have a few people who are legitimately interested in getting stronger/faster/etc., but youll also have your fair share of people who are there because they have to be and will do a damn good job of making your job difficult. Those people are tough to fall in line.

In professional and most college S&C areas, youre the fall guy and the first coach to be fired when a season doesnt go as planned. Much like other jobs, its totalllly about who you know and not what you know. If you look at some of the resumes and past experiences of some of these coaches, its baffling how some get the jobs yet theres a ton of highly qualified people out there. (Thats the deal in almost every profession though)

In regards to certifications, get a quality certification, and just get to work. I wouldnt focus on getting too many certifications right away. It's likely going to be a waste of time and money for you.

That's part of the profession at that level though, motivating players and getting them to buy into the system and philosophy.  Yea every team is gonna have their headaches but you do everything you can with those guys and if it doesn't work and they don't budge then chances are they won't be there long anyway.  It's extremely rare for a player to do what he's supposed to do off the field and with his position coaches where he's a productive player but a headache with the strength coach.  The strength has a lot of power with a team, more power than people would think because they coach and interact with the players more than anybody.

Yea blame does get tossed around but if you have a good relationship with the rest of the staff and the players love you and buy into your philosophy and there are obvious results with your program then a strength coach's job is usually safe unless the entire staff gets terminated or the relationship with the head coach isn't strong.

Yea you're right there are plenty of questionable coaches out there that are in because they played with so and so or worked with that guy, also there are tons of really great coaches and programs too.  Like you said, same thing with most professions.

Yea all you really need is the CSCS/SCCC/USAW which are the most respected (of course USAW isn't as highly regarded as the other two or count as a accredited cert with the NCAA) but with the others I just wanted something extra because unfortunately with some coaches the more you have the more respectable it is because it shows you value continuing education.  I agree though the CSCS should just be enough.

My body sucks this week idk what it is.  Tweaked my left bicep.  Have had right knee discomfort for the past 4 days now and my right quad is strained...buckles for no reason every now and then.  I have the opening game of my soccer season this sunday against the current national champs.  I desperately need to be 100% by sunday

I sit down in a squat for a few minutes before and after squatting. Also rock back and forth to get a good range of stretch in.

i stretch for a good 15-20 before squatting and really work on the hip mobility. look for some good hip stretches online. I usually do some floor work and or find a box used for box jumps and put my leg on it and stretch it. stretching the hip really helps with depth and takes the tension off the lower back in squatting and deads. since you can bend better.

Banded hip stretches are money too. I do them at least twice a week for mobility. Plenty of youtube videos on it. Kelly Starrett is usually a good go to guy for mobility.
