I remember the racist rumor for Tommy. That rumor had the same effect on Timberland boots as well. Both were hurting for a long time as a result.

Chiming in on the rumor. Def spread like wildfire when I was in junior high. Once the rumor hit, everyone completely stopped shopping at TH and went full Nautica & RL.

when exactly were power pieces going for big coin back in the day? currently we're at the apex of what vintage polo has been re-selling for from what i've seen online.
it's not about how much cash you blow, but it's how you blow the cash. this "game" was always to get expensive gear for cheap and i still keep that mentality.
what i type may convey a different meaning which happens often, but talking down to you as a child was never my intention.
i'm more humble and grown than people think of me on here, but in the end I can care less about what people think of me on here.

For people adding their .02 cents on the whole Hilfiger "racist", it would be helpful to state where you are from and lived at during the times so we can see how the rumor affect different regions.
In NYC, the rumors were just rumors. From what I know and heard, it was taken out of context to the effect him saying something like "he never thought that minorities would be so attracted to his clothing" because he was designing clothing on a preppy lifestyle and it was the complete opposite that made his brand iconic at the time.
But people still wore it but eventually Hilfiger died off. Likewise to what BIP stated, when the Tommy Jeans label came out, he catered to the demographic making it somewhat less appealing.

I don't remember those rumors hurting Tommy Hill in nyc much. Never knew anyone who stopped wearing his gear because of it either. There wasn't really any confirmation that he said what was alleged and the other rumors about him hooking up Puba with entire wardrobes actually helped him. He embraced our culture, cut clothes the way we wore them and would be seen rubbing elbows with rappers. He fell off because his designs did.
To be honest most ppl I knew or dealt with didn't care about racial rumors whether it was Tommy or Timbs cause quite frankly so many of us weren't paying for their products and when we did most of the time is was at half price from boosters or "gap houses" and if you were a regular the disco was even greater.

Saying that something was designed for the people who wound up liking it is something incredibly different than saying you don't want those people wearing your items. That's what I never got. If he said something like the former, it does not in any way imply that latter. ...Like those dudes who hopped off Tommy and onto Nautica or RL - how were those brands designed "for them" any more so than Hilfiger was?... Nothing about the whole fiasco made sense. And, I think in NYC - home of the most acutely calibrated BS detectors there are - people just sort of dismissed it as noise.

Those "gap houses" were a beautiful thing! I remember going to several in your hood and mine. That was back when I spoke Spanish a lot better than I do today.

I been tried to get this point across and i think it is pretty plain for anyone who comes in this thread to see. Just try to ignore it and not let it derail the thread. Some people are just ********, no need to let it rustle you.
Yeah I spoke on this in a previous conversation. The way I see it they are chasing that new customer/new dollar a lot more than they should be from a longevity standpoint. That nike/jordan comparison, it's happening. And once it starts it just keeps going and going due to the dynamics of publicly traded companies. Once Ralph passes, this company will be whored out to the max.
