Post Your Favorite Comic Book Artists - Jack Kirby Exhibit in CA

Alex Ross and Jim Lee are probably my two favorites. Adi Granov has some pretty good stuff also. No one has mentioned him yet, he's got some sick work.

Good thread.

In my childhood I was way into Mark Bagley and Mike Wieringo.

Now I'd say my favorites are John Romita Jr and James Stokoe. I love intricate line work.

I'm also a big fan of William Stout though I don't think he works on comics anymore. He's designed a lot of creatures for film so even if you're not familiar with his work, you've surely seen something he designed.

Michael Turner
I think he would have been great and will give Campbell a run for his money

Frank Miller -- love all his Ronin & Sin City art, real definitive for him. nobody else draws characters like him

Jack Kirby -- simply put, a God amongst normal men with pencils. pretty much made the first iterations of every big name from Marvel in the 60s/70s & creator of my favorite non-Earth residing character EVER, Silver Surfer

Sara Pichelli -- her work in the Pixie [X-Men] miniseries first grasped my attention...but HANDS DOWN the Miles Morales (aka the new Spider-Man) stuff for Ultimate Fallout & Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man is her best stuff to-date :smokin

Jim Lee for sure. i'd have to say J Scott Campbell also for the work he did with Gen13, and Michael Turner for Witchblade

Good thread, very much appreciate everyone posted so far -Alex Ross is my all time favorite for sure though.

Jim Lee and Michael Turner are up there as well

-the way Turner especially drew the human body was just beautiful to me, especially the elongated midsections.

I would also rank Brian Bolland very highly as well, I never understand why he's always left out of these discussions...

Jim Murray, another great British artist who like Bolland started his career on 2000AD...

J. G. Jones and Massimo Carnevale for the Y: The Last Man covers

JRJR is the worst!!
With that being said, pretty much a fan of everyone posted in here. would love to see Alex Ross do a version of the current X-Men and Avengers.
Here's one of my favorites who i thinks deserves to do a big story a la Civil War.

Greg Land

Michael Turner-the way he drew the female figures is unsurpassed IMO.
An amazing artist gone too soon.
Travel Foreman-DC's new 52 Animal Man is just stunning yet simple.

lee and mcfarlane come to mind immediately.....if we can include comic cards then throw Joe Jusko in too.

I've scaled back any JRJR hate since I've grown to appreciate some of his earlier work but you mention Greg Land. I don't have any problem with it but hardcore fans hate him because he traces from other artists, copies from actual pictures and porn pics, and reuses facial expressions like crazy.

He just got announced as the artist for Iron Man in the Marvel NOW initiative an that's when I came across all the complaints.

Buggin...
I can get it though, some ppl don't like all those lines, most outlines of faces are identical, noses he draws look broken. It's mixed reviews imo, I can't call him one of the greats. I love his Kick-*** work and Eternals but don't like him on AvX and Sentry for the most part.

Yeah I can understand that. His work is stylized in sort of a block-like way, but that's why I really like his stuff.

At least he isn't tracing pictures of Kevin Nash though

JRJR work on AvX is terrible! Lots of his stuff just seems really rushed and not very detailed. Would not use him on any major events.

I like Greg Lands work because of the detail in the faces and the fact that all around it doesn't look too cartoony. I understand it's comics but I like the realisim his work brings IMHO. As for as that "Many faces" pic you posted , its the Thing. He has a rock face. Not many emotions can be made with a rock face. He's keeping it real :D

Look at either link I posted he copies or recycles the same face over and over and the same poses over and over for any character. Now I don't mind it specifically cuz most times the style is unique to him despite tracing photos or recycling but I can understand fans of artwork being mad at his laziness. What I find flagrant is when he copies other artists work.

As for the Thing being made of rock that's not an excuse, from Kirby and Ditko to Epting, Garney, and Dragotta currently there's many ways to draw the character especially when it comes to facial expressions.

I'm sure there are tons of artists that do what that Greg Land guy does, but they just don't get pulled up on it

You would think that but why single out Greg Land? I'm pretty sure this is a case of a guy being praised for his artwork and then the rabid fans discovering this. There most likely are tons of artists doing this but they're not getting the big name jobs Land gets or is anywhere as sought after by DC and Marvel. Nobody cares if some no name bums that have got published a few times do this but Land's current peers for the most part are not pulling this **** and doing it so blatantly.
