Tipping etiquette when you're being treated

I was treated out to lunch the other day and we had a really good waiter. He was really attentive and went above and beyond, even when we were really slow ordering. However, when we got the bill, my hosts didn't really pay him any kind of tip. I don't even think we gave 5%. Our waiter wasn't around after he gave us the tab back, and he was like a high school student so I knew how money's tight when you're a kid.

What do you do in this situation? I'm not trying to be impolite to my hosts but I'm also not trying to short-change someone who deserves more.

And this isn't an argument over whether one should tip.

Next time someone pays just let them know thanks for the meal and you will take care of the tip

My friends parents treated me and I offered to leave the tip and they told me not to worry about it.

At least offer

what up SC? you disappeared? got lost on sneakertalk? haha

if you didn't pay it's okay, but a good gesture is to get away from the hosts and go up to the waiter and personally tip him.
As long as the host doesn't see it's alright.

If you're being treated it isn't your job to tip.

If you feel that maybe they should have tipped more then leave a little extra, but again, they offered to pick up the bill.

sneak back and take the tip when they are leaving, you deserve it for being a swell chap.

Someone find the face-palm-gif because I know whats coming - 2 camps of people

Group #1 - says that being a waiter is easy and theres no need to tip more than a couple of bucks

Group #2 - says that its a tough job and that if you're cheap with tipping to stay home and eat a pop-tart

I wouldn't tip regardless.. Why should I pay someone for doing their job?

You don't tip waiters/delivery drivers?

I would have just told him, "pre-shad-id bruh," (appreciate it, bro) head nodded, and dipped. I wouldn't care if he filled your drink 30 times. Get outta here with that "above and beyond" nonsense. People are so terrible at their jobs here in America, particularly angry people who work in the "service sector" that we consider them coming anywhere close to their job description some massive accomplishment worthy of praise and bonus.

You know how I know you're poor?

:wow: You don't tip waiters/delivery drivers?

I don't tip people to bring my food out. Do you guys tip the guy at footlocker to bring out your shoes?

The people who do deserve tips in my opinion are the UPS/Fedex/USPS delivery guys on those days where it is incredibly hot/cold or pouring rain and they don't accept tips, although I do give them a cold water when they come to my door and deliver a package.

i always tip the pizza man and unless i got a hot waitress bending over and showing cleavage they usually get $5

I am a pretty substantial deviation away from "poor," but thanks for playing. You'll get me next time.

It's their job though. They signed up for it.

And it is increasingly common that people are tipping their USPS mailman which is another one that when I found out I had to tip or be a son of a *****, I turned into the weebay gif. A general standard is 20 bucks around the Christmas holiday

5%? :smh: Walk up to the waiter where the hosts can't see you and tip him personally. Hosts don't lose face and waiter gets tipped properly.

ups driver has an actual annual salary and benefits. dude working in the restaurant is making max $20 a night without tips.

Only ghetto, classless, or cheap people don't tip when they get good service. Trying to justify it any other way is all BS.

You should tip, but what rubs me the wrong way are the waiters who feel like theyre ENTITLED to tips. You know the ones where if they dont get a tip they like or a tip at all, they whine and complain and swear revenge on those people if they ever get them again. Its not hard to grasp the fact that not everyone believes in tipping its not obligatory, stop acting like it is.

I always tip though, its how I was raised and I feel like they should be tipped in most cases.

In the case of the OP, I've been there and I've just left the tip for them to see, didnt really think much of it and I dont think they did either, they dont believe in tipping but I do and seeing as how I didnt even contribute to the meal I should be the one leaving it anyways.

The folks who never tip definitely haven't worked in a service industry based job like the restaurant business as a waiter or a bartender. You do know their "salary" comes strictly from tips right? That $2.00 an hour they make is soley for taxes. Cheap folks are the worst.

Lol... a NT "tip" thread

These threads never end well.

If you are being treated, its up the person who took you out to tip.

As far as tipping goes, I'm not for it. The patrons shouldn't be forced to subsidize a person's salary because the owner wants to cut corners to make a profit. I'd rather pay more for my food than have to have to do that. The percentage at which you're expected to tip for a meal is very unreasonable. I don't eat out to begin with and when I do it is rare, so save it if you were going to jump down my throat. Some restaurants are downright shady at how they try to get people to double tip, but I'm not going to get into that. That's another thread for itself.
