dude was on the radio when I was coming home from work, pretty much admitting he hit a lick and that he cant rap, he says he got signed because he is doing something someone else isnt.

Pretty much him being in Atlanta which currently has the lowest standard for artist talent being produced and pushed at the moment ,his imagery and the fact Fader and SPIN magazine have a grotestque infatuation with this type of imagery and a certain sound in hip hop pushed him to the forefront. Dude is no substance all image product of the tumblr age where rappers get big not because of lyrics or even how they sound on beat just off their clothes.

Okay, so I just spent like 30min watching interviews of dude on youtube. All I have to say is, at anyone who thinks he is just some ignorant hood rapper. This guy knows what he's doing, he sees this whole thing as a joke and is basically just chilling and doing him.
TJ is one of those Kid Cudi-type artists who make you feel like they're regular people, that approach is a breath of fresh air to music imo.

its the song... not the beat really... more so his flow and lyrics... everybody in any club/bar will scream "popped a molly im sweatin, WOO!"
there are plenty of live beats that make terrible club songs cuz somebody made a terrible song to them...

Yeah he trippin.. The song is the definition of a hit especially when you talk about the current and not the past. People not liking the complete package seems to have them going against the facts because of their personal preference. He is speaking on his personal preference but his personal knowledge should exceed his preference and if not maybe thats why he can't see it's a hit.
