GRADUATE STUDENTS OF NT

Jesus,
I got about $20k left how do you manage paying it off?
P.S.
Forgot to thank you for your restaurant suggestion last week. My ex-gf and I absolutely LOVED Filomena. But after the large portions, whole bottle of wine and sambuca they gave us after dinner (since it was our first time there), we didn't make it out to the bars that night

dont know about anywhere else, but here in the Texas, $20k aint that hard to pay off if you do it to it...

think about it... come out of school, making 65K, right? not too bad... around average...

after taxes, you're taking home about 48K... 4K a month...

now, being a single man, living in a modest apartment, with a modest car not, you can pay it off...

apartment - 800
car - 500
utilities 200
food - 500
yambs - 300...

TOTAL - 2800...

that's 2.8k a month, being generous on all of those things...

after all that, you STILL got 1.2 k left over for the month... you can knock out 20K in a couple years, famb...

:pimp: :pimp:

Who makes $65k straight out of college ?

The highest u heard is $45k.

Yeah 65k right out of college is pretty high, but if you have a degree that is in high demand (Information Assurance, IT) or something specialized and you luck out, it is possible.

Sup NT,
I'm in a bit of a situation and I need a bit of insight.
Currently I am going into my senior year at SJSU for psych. My community college was crap, but my year at SJSU i've managed at least a 3.5, so now my cumulative GPA is around a 3.0 maybe 3.1. I am scheduled to take the GRE's the end of sept but I honestly don't think I am ready for it. So now if I wait to push back my GRE's I wont make it in time to apply for grad school for the fall semester of grad school.
My question is, would it hurt to just take the GRE's once and see what I score. Apply to schools and hope that I am able to get into one hopefully. Then if not, taking them again in a year.
or
Wait it out another year and take the GREs when I am ready, hoping that my score will be higher to make up for my GPA, that way I could possibly do some volunteering and things of that nature. The downfall of this is that I have loans that I wouldn't get differed since I wouldn't be going to school. Also, I am scared of taking a year off of school and becoming lazy.
Also, I do have the option of applying to schools such as Alliant or Agrosy which are private schools that offer psych grad programs that do not require the GRE and I could possibly start off there right after I am done with my undergrad.
Thoughts?

Go ahead and get as much studying in for the GRE, take it, and apply. You never know what may happen. If you get in, great. If not, then you will know what you need to do to improve your chances the next time around.

Starting my MOT program at the end of the month. Pretty excited and scared. Physiology and Anatomy classes are going to be a challenge.

What school are you attending? I will start my last fieldwork rotation at the end of this month. Let me know if you have any questions.

The undergrad major for Petroleum Engineering and Petroleum Geology makes between $75k to $90k from the major schools (UT and Texas A&M). That's not including the signing bonuses. I'm going for my Masters in the field. Oil is where the money is.

I'm in a different boat than a lot of you guys. I just graduated with a Bachelors in Art (aka you don't get a "real" job with this ) and have been considering getting an Master of Fine Arts in the near future. Reason I want one is for the connections afforded through the faculty and, with the right school, a bigger boost in credibility. Also, with an MFA, I could hold a professorship at a university so I could earn a relatively steady pay while maintaining my separate studio practice. The problem with an MFA is... the best schools happen to also be the most expensive. I'd be paying similar amounts of dollars compared to students going in for MBA or MS with a future career that payed a tiny fraction that those degrees would net . I would only go if I got into my dream schools (Yale, UCLA, RISD, SAIC) and if, hopefully, I could get some kind of scholarship. I was able to graduate undergrad without any debt and I'd like to keep it that way.

Before I graduated, I was able to talk to the president of a pretty prestigious arts organization in New York. I told him of my plans to pursue an MBA and he told me to try making it professionally first. What's the point of being an educator with no experience in the real world? That's why I picked up my life in California and am now living in New York City trying to grind it out. Make it or not, I needed to see what it was like.

I guess for those that might be interested in getting an MBA... my advice would be, keep working on your portfolio even after you graduate from undergrad. Show that you have maintained a studio practice outside of the student realm. Try to get more shows and exhibit your work. Don't just show your work anywhere. If you can, hold out and try to get your work to the point where your work is somewhere you want it to be. Don't be the guy with the paintings in the coffee shop. Build connections with other artists and, if you can, gallery and museum people. Only go for grad school if you really, really want it. It's not a game and debt is no joke.

and my buddy graduated in construction engineering and got a 65k job straight out of undergrad. :x :smh: some of his classmates got even better offers.

Somebody from my school with a degree in Computer Info Systems and a concentration in Information Security/Assurance got 75K.

Mind you I went to a HBCU and they didnt start offering Info Security concentrations till last year.

I'm so mad I majored in management instead of that...so mad. >:

*Throws laptop*

What areas were they majoring in?

Unrelated, but how did you get into the Fed Gov't in DC? I've been applying 3 years straight (internships, part-time, and full-time) and I STILL can't even get a interview :smh:

Petroleum Engineering and Petro Geology. As far as Gov't goes...best way to do is to go to the site of the Agency or Gov entity you want to work for and check their recruiting/job fair schedule and see when they are coming to a place near you. The best way to get in is to get facetime with them, because USAJOBS is a crapshoot. That's what I did.

Make sure you are filling out the application completely. Any little piece of omitted info will get your app canned.

To the ones at a major university ...

How do you feel when you're on campus? I'm 23, but anytime I go feel like grandpa ...

All the young bucks full of energy ...

It may be me, but I feel like I get a few more looks than normalfrom the yambs.

Graduated high school and took 2 years off to just work. I feel like I may have wasted 2 years but at the same time, I'm in a mindset now where I want to actually go to college to learn.

As for majors, I'm still confused as to what I really want so I'm going to take my Gen Ed courses. I was thinking of something In Business at first, but I'm looking at Cybercrime as well. Psychology what I feel most passionate about however but I'm not sure how the job market looks there. I like Law as well but I don't see how I can work full time and eventually go to Law school at the same time. I pretty much want a career in something that makes good money but I don't want to be doing something I hate for the rest of my life.

I start school at a CC next Tuesday but I'm only taking 2 classes for now to get into the school feeling again. With my work schedule and bills, I'll have to take summer classes as well if I want to get out of CC within 2 years, 2.5 at the most.

Regardless of what I end up doing...my body and mind are both ready, fambs.

_______

I have a laptop right now for school which I bought a new battery for. Would getting a tablet be better than hauling a laptop around?

I know some pharmacists and they are making a huge entry way salary that starts from 100k to 150k with a Pharm D and a year of training.

did biology ugrad at Rutgers, New Brunswick in Biology, minoring in Psychology.
Graduated with a 3.2, which wasn't enough to do anything in my plans.
Took a year off to reassess. Entered the masters program at UMDNJ in Newark, NJ last fall.
Current GPA is 3.726, hopefully graduate with ~3.8...
Will be finishing this fall, and taking my DATs in around then.
Hopefully start dental school at UMDNJ next fall, lord willing.

Im 31 in my last year. How do you think I feel? I feel wiser and since I have experienced life some of the stuff I learn is common knowledge. I feel professors respect the older heads alot more as well.

College aint for the none motivated. If those 2 years gained you the motivation needed to attend college, no time was wasted. I went in the Navy for 6 years. Its good though cause most of my high school friends started but didnt finish. Some have a mountain of debt.

Starting year 4 of an MD/PhD combined program. It has been tough, bros. But I've accomplished so much more than I thought I could. Everything is paid for, and I even get a stipend. I haven't had any debt until this point, and am managing to save a good amount of my check each month. Good luck to everyone pursuing graduate degrees. We got this. If any of you are interested or have questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Co-sign this.

I'm a similar age as you, but I feel old compared to the freshman, sophs, and even juniors I TA'd. I hear them talking about boozing on a Wednesday night and just think, "Man, I wish I could still do that."

I'm nervous as heck. Tomorrow I have to go up to A&M and get a Professor to accept my thesis proposal and take me on as a Grad student. This has to happen before I'm formally accepted...basically saying that if no Professor takes me on, I will not be starting the program in January. I've been a part of some interesting high profile research projects in the past, and I know what my thesis is going to be...but I'm still a little nervous. A lot is on the line here.
