2013 College Football Thread (Realer than Real Deal Holyfield -->S/O Craftsy)

Meh, they have the talent they need to run the offense that works for them. They don't need 5* Linemen because that is not what their system calls for. They finally got one, Arik Armstead, and they put him on defense because that is what he wanted to play (*shrugs*).

They have talent at the skill positions.

Yeah, I'm not exactly sure what "USC level talent" means here. Different schools call for different types of players. I would say that quite a few players could fit into Oregon's system, but not everybody is built (or should be built) to fit Oregon's scheme. My preference is what Oregon does, but I don't discredit what other offenses can do given the right talent. Really, they're all just different ways to accomplish the same thing, and that's to score more points than the other team.

No, because most of the Big 10 teams have things like academic standards and don't commit egregious recruiting violations on the level of the SEC and such.

Northwestern... top 25 team and graduating 100% of their seniors. UMich is still a top school as well.

Exception being tOSU and Urban Meyer. We all know about Urban.
Every school commits recruiting violations. As far as academics go, we've seen players get into schools with some help.

.

SEC is top dog because they are getting players from the region and cherry picking everywhere else. Teams like UGA, LSU, Florida, etc could remain competitive if they only recruited their respective states. As long as they continue to pump out NFL talent, the B1G will continue to fall behind because they are lacking the athletes the south has.

Personally, I want the B1G to flourish, but in saying that, gotta realize that it has an identity issue. Ground and pound days are almost over.

There is a reason why dudes from (example) California skip places like Cal, UCLA, Stanford, etc. Cali is the most populous state by far, and you can't even tell me a state like Louisiana is producing more NFL talent than Cali. If you had to go to a school in your state, the best teams would almost certainly be California, Texas and Florida. Nobody would ever go to Alabama if they had any standards and recruited fairly.

I use Northwestern as an example for a bunch of reasons. They're my team, so I know a lot about them. They are right next to one of the biggest cities in the country (Chicago). They are turning into a perennial bowl-bound team, despite being a top 20 school academically and graduating 97% of their seniors. Notre Dame and Michigan pretty much mirror that as well.

As for identity, Northwestern was one of the first teams (along with Oregon) to implement a complete no-huddle, spread offense. I'm predicting that huddles will be a thing of the past in a couple years. Teams rarely use huddles now as it is.

Let's be real: SEC is top dog because they don't give two ***** about academics, and they'll do whatever it takes to land a five star recruit.

To sum it all up, the SEC is on top because they can recruit whoever they want and pretty much offer them whatever they want. The B1G is full of solid schools and although I'm sure they do commit violations, they are no OK State or Florida (well, maybe tOSU with Urban Liar).

You know that ain't true.

It is true, the B1G has two states the produce top level talent MI and OH

While the SEC has FL, GA, LA,TX, AL

And every school is cheating its just about how far are you willing to go.

Not talking about per capita, talking about total number of players. Because that's what matters in recruiting... how many good recruits you have. It doesn't matter how big the state is.

But you guys are probably right, there are a lot of Southern states pumping out great recruits. But it does really matter whether or not the recruits are staying in your area or going to an SEC team that isn't going to sweat your schooling. And that will rent you a car and an apartment.

And not all teams are cheating. Northwestern, Boston College, Stanford and Penn State (per WSJ article) have never been accused of violations.

Some schools are soooo blatant though. Oklahoma State, Oklahoma,  Florida, FSU and Miami come to mind

and what's crazy is, he had 3 catches for 135 in the first quarter. could've had so much more :smh:

How? I missed most of the 2nd half but it's not like it was a blowout and Evans sat the 2nd half. 95 of those yards came on 1 play in the 4th.

It's funny how people project stats and such for a relatively small timeframe into a whole game or season as if a normal progression will occur. Like if JFF throws for 500 in the 1 game he could end up with 6000 for the regular season.

I'll stick with the majority if not damn near all of the schools commit recruiting violations - 1) The cut-throat nature of it. 2)The blurred lines of what is and isn't a violation.

To your point about the southern schools not caring about academics, I don't believe that to be true, but the focus on academics in those schools can be linked to embedded socioeconomic factors within the south. With that, you're going to get even more of a radical fanbase because culturally, that's all there really is, given the lack of major metropolitan areas. You said, "nobody would ever go to __". Football in the south is everything, there's a big difference in going to universities in different geographic regions as a football player. They would go to Bama, Ole Miss, etc just because football reigns supreme and the programs back that up. Those universities are trying to improve their academic standing, but the football program is the cash cow with the majority, so naturally more resources would go there. Once again though, socioeconomics comes into play with that argument.

Look at the draft the last few years and see where the NFL is drafting. As a top recruit, why would you not want to compete against the best of the best?

Take a glance at Bama's Championship teams rosters and primarily where those recruits are coming from.

At Ohio State, Urban is recruiting the south HEAVILY. As an alum, I know the B1G is chopped full of great academic schools, but they aren't going to gain ground in recruiting because of it.

Northwestern and BC both have had point shaving issues, no? Though it was like 10,000 years ago

On the whole I can see the general premise of what you're getting at re: this 'Cheating' thing

Not having NCAA Violations =/= Not cheating though

Yeah, they do. It was 15 years ago in 1998.

And you're right, violations are definitely not the same as cheating. There are millions of violations you can get hit with. Other schools that have had violations in the past that I doubt are really "cheating" are ones like Vanderbilt and Rice.

Sorkoram, I'm definitely not saying that all southern schools push aside academics for athletics. I am calling out schools like Nebraska, Florida, OK State, etc, who have shown again and again that they will recruit dudes who are idiots and or complete jerkoffs in order to win football games. Just look at Aaron Hernandez. The more I learn about dude, the more I wonder how he was allowed on an NCAA team, much less one that won a National Championship. That is disgraceful, imo.

Keyshawn Johnson was ineligible to play in the Rose Bowl in 1996 (1995 season) against Northwestern because of academics, but it was covered up by USC until after the game. He caught 12 passes for 216 yards and a TD. I went to that game and I will never forgive him for that

considering he had 3 catches in the 1st for 135, then got called for a weak *** PI call which could have been 30 more yards, then didn't have a catch until the mid 3rd and i don't think was even targeted until then, i'd say he could've still done more damage.

So what, are schools only supposed to recruit good guys. In life if your talented your allowed to get away with stuff that just how it is.

Vanderbilt is a top notch academic institution and they have rape case sitting on them. Michigan has some stuff going on there too. You can only control they players so far, idiots will be idiots no matter where they are.

Ah yeah, well if they recruited smarter athletes, we'd see much better wonderlic scores :x

But if he runs a 4.4, sign him up

It is what it is I guess.

Any darkhorse teams for BCS title game, besides Louisville?

Evans should have been targeted on the jump ball that resulted in Johnny's first interception :smh:

Or better yet...Malena and Carson have combined for 7 TDs from inside the 5. That play call still bothers me.

And speaking of Wonderlic, I took one for a job interview last week. Scored a 33 :pimp:

i don't remember who he threw it to, but i kept asking myself, "why's the receiver back pedaling to the ball and not getting in a position to jump for it".

at some point of being semi drunk at the game, i found myself just randomly yelling "throw it to mike"

Uh, yeah. That would be called ethics.
laugh.gif
Exactly what I'm talking about... some schools have ethics and some don't. Simple as that. I'm not saying you gotta recruit saints, but how many Gators get suspended every year for violating team rules? Like a dozen? Sometimes isolated incidents happen. Sometimes, it is clear that the institution is solely about winning, and that's really poor to me.

Ethics and sports don't mesh well together, especially in cfb; you have coaches you have enormous amount of pressure on them from boosters, fans, etc..., young naive, not so smart men, agents, than you add in the black market element because the players aren't paid in a sport that is printing money and you want ethics.

But I already pointed out multiple teams that are doing it the right way and winning, so your argument has no legs.

Being ethical is hard. Being crooked is easy.

I agree with everything you said about CFB, but I am also pointing out that it is possible to win and have ethics.
