2013 College Football Thread (Realer than Real Deal Holyfield -->S/O Craftsy)

Too many variables in CFB not to be excited by a BCS game appearance. Especially given what's gone on in Coral Gables for the last decade. Not hanging a banner up over it, but come on, let's not act like it's meaningless. Especially when you look at the team and expectations coming into the season. To be Top 10, 5-0, beat Florida, and controlling our destiny right now is huge. No matter what team you're a fan of.

trying to understand how a team cares about winning a BCS championship but doesn't care about winning your own conference...when you can't win a BCS game without winning your conference. hell, you can win your conference and still not make it to the BCS championship game.

Seriously?

yes. serious. you can talk about wanting to win titles all you want, but if you can't even win your conference you look stupid. baby steps. you can't win the BCS title game without winning your conference first, and even then you might not make it to the BCS conference game. so worry about winning the ACC first before you think about winning the whole thing.

Sure, winning a conference and/or BCS bowl doesn't mean nearly as much as a NC but you're out of your mind to act that it doesn't mean something, especially if your team hasn't won one in a while. It's stuff like that which helps build toward the possibility of being in the NC race.

How many schools have gone from not winning their conference in the previous 5 years to winning a NC? Auburn? We all know how they got there and what happened after that. Serious question though, I'm sure there are other examples but I'd guess it's not too frequent.

If nothing else, winning a conference and earning a BCS appearance is a first step towards greater success and a building block for the future. There most definitely are other factors that come into play but to brush it off like it's not an accomplishment is silly because your team likely won't even have a shot at greater success til you win one, even if it just means a regular old BCS appearance which less than 10% of teams can claim every year.

With the constant turnover in college football in players and coaching staffs, the previous year's success doesn't mean the current team will repeat or improve on it but no doubt it helps to sell the program and work towards something bigger. It helps recruit, bring in money (both can be related  ), generate publicity, etc.

False.

Stanford won the Pac XII & both Stanford & Oregon won BCS games last year

A ton, an I mean a ton of you Saints' fans didn't come on the scene until the Payton X Brees era.
Considering you're in school, whether that be HS or college almost assures me you were not a "die-hard" fan of those scrubs around the dark dark years of the franchise, I'm talking Ditka... city about to lose the franchise era.
 You mad bro? I wasn't even putting the Cowboys down, I was putting the dumb fans that I know down. & I am in HS. Is it my fault I'm young?? I couldn't root for a team I wasn't around to see.

The majority of my life, I didn't even care about FOOTBALL, the sport as a whole, on any level. I was basketball all day. I started watching football (Saints only) CASUALLY in about '05, around the time Brees & Bush got there. I was still all about basketball up until 2 years ago. Now I hate basketball & football is life.

The Saints have been my team since I started to remotely care about football as a whole. I DO consider myself a die-hard fan now, because I've been a fan for half of my life, & before that i didn't even watch football. Can't speak for anyone else, but I feel like I have a legitmate reason for being a fan since the Brees/Payton era, not to mention I'm from Louisiana.

Been an LSU fan for a little bit less time than a Saints fan, only because I didn't care about cfb until later. My becoming a fan played out the same way as my becoming a Saints fan.

Wasn't that the Bore Bowl?

I just find it funny we're talking about an Ed Reed led Miami football team so much. Dude last played for the Canes in 2001, right?

Let's keep it here and now. None of this "last year's team" crap because it's a new season and that's what makes college football so great. Teams vary from year to year and it's always changing.

2013 is where my mind is at :pimp:

Precisely my point.

Next year you'll want to focus only on 2014

Then again the year after

Etc etc

Because that's all you'll ever have. Hopes and wishes.

Inside glass cases.

I mean Oregon can still win the.....

Ehhh forget it.

They'll figure it out at some point.

They run off at the mouth over and over and ******g over again. You watch, as soon, I mean AS SOON as they win a title, the internet will need to block them.

Do you have ANY idea how many times PER DAY, I hear 1977 brought up here in Oregon? I grew up in California, and didn't even know 1977 ever existed. (no jerks, I was not yet born yet, clowns  )

Move to Oregon years ago, that year gets brought up more than any year on the calendar.

But Duck fans say titles don't matter. If their day ever comes, suddenly titles will be the ONLY thing that has ever mattered, ever. I can see it already.

Georgia fans still won't never know that feel tho. :pimp:

When UW lost to Stanford two weeks ago, in a game I felt they could have won, I was upset. I wasn't upset because they lost or had no chance of having a "successful" season. I was upset because (despite the laughts that may come) they then had just about a zero chance at getting to the Nat'l Championship. Now, with two losses, Sark is gonna spout on and on about still being able to accomplish goals and what not, but that's bs. It was a disappointing season...Already.

My mindset is with CP. Other UW fans can have their bigger-than-the-Holiday-Bowl-win triumphs, but I don't even care about all that. I want them relevant again by winning a Nat'l Championship.

Why not talk about the greatest safety of all time in CFB history.

I might blackout from pure euphoric bliss if they get 8 wins

In the Natty? Not often, in the BCS bowl games, every year

That's my point. You can't say the only thing that's important is winning the national championship if you aren't winning your conference, considering you have to win your conference to win a national championship. (With few exceptions)

You seem to be missing the bigger picture that I was alluding too.

It should be assumed if you are playing for the title, your conference is locked up. (yes, Bama with the 1 in 130 year bad example)

But the point was that winning your conference and then losing the title game, you don't then revert back to "well, we won our conference at least" No, you failed. You didn't win it all. No celebrations, they don't bring your team back on the field 25 years later, etc, you did nothing of merit.

When you win that title, they DO bring the team back, celebrate anniversary's etc for that team.

Didn't LSU just do that this weekend? Didn't they honor the Saban title, and he couldn't make it obviously? Nobody honors the 1996 Pac 10 champion. No parades are thrown for the 86 SEC champs.

Titles dude. They are what matter. They are what teams play for. The goal, every single year.

UCLA won their half of the conference the other year with a losing record, the **** they gonna celebrate that **** for?
