2013 College Football Thread (Realer than Real Deal Holyfield -->S/O Craftsy)

Sony says he will be at Miami's game tomorrow. He said he speaks to Hurlie Brown about every other week.

When asked about an official visit to Miami, he said he would probably take one, but danced around the question when asked about the reason to take an official while still being committed to UGA.

His brother Marken thinks he will enroll at UGA in January, but neither Marken or Sony sounded ultra confident about it only saying it's supposed to happen.
Luke Stampini just posted this. If the brother package deal has fallen through, then I definitely like Miami's chances.

I just don't like that some teams are given the benefit of the doubt because of their "history" rather than really looking at the teams objectively (pollsters I mean). Justing using USC as an example, but you could say the same thing about Michigan, TCU, Texas from this year.

As an Oregon fan you should be happy that the program has grabbed the Nation's attention without having much history. They have carved out a niche, and they are a program that has grabbed headlines for being "new school" for lack of better terms. They are to this generation, as to what FSU and Miami were in the 80's and 90's. Look at them now, premiere programs.

This complaint of history being important only comes from upstarts, with not much of it. There is a reason what is widely considered the Top 10 programs in the country are all filled with rich and deep histories. It's a selling point. Even though those programs may be in a rough patch they are a coach away from being great. Every program has it's peaks and valleys, but these programs have proven from time to time to rise and be the cream of the crop.

Rich histories, deep resources, deep support, alumni, etc.

At the end of the day, you have to win. Funny how Oregon and Miami fans on this message boards butt heads constantly, Oregon is the new Miami, instead of cocaine and hookers, it's equipment and uniforms. Major difference is that Miami won when it mattered and Oregon hasn't been able to do that yet.

Preseason rankings will never go away, simply because every sport have preseason rankings. Unfortunately, for CFB and CBB, they actually somewhat matter. If you look at any other sport, MLB, NBA, NFL, newstands are flooded with magazines predicting and ranking where teams will end. BCS rankings don't get released until October. Gift and a curse, I guess.

Let's be happy that the ball is rolling on having a real playoff system, this four team one taking place starting 2014 is just a start. :smokin

As far as me being happy about Oregon, I'm ecstatic. I think the exposure is fantastic and I like how they've been able to channel that effectively and really create a brand around their program. I'm an advertising student so I pick up on those things more than others might, so to me it's more than just the team that I think is great. It's their entire brand and image that I think is fantastic. My hope is that they are able to continue that success in the future.

I also get your point about upstarts. And while I agree that history has some merit in a program, I just don't like how some people place all their attention on the history of the program. It should be recognized, sure, but it can't be the only thing. I've read things from sportswriters about how they won't vote Alabama anywhere but #1 "because they've won the last two titles and until they prove me wrong I'm not moving them," but in reality what they should be saying is I'm voting Alabama #1 because they return a lot of players from a team that won the national title. If Alabama wins the title again this year and half their team leaves for the NFL, should you still vote them #1 based on what they've done the last three years? I just don't think that's the most important aspect to a program. Coaching is certainly part of it, current players, some info from previous year (regarding players and their performance). To be fair, I had no idea how Oregon would perform under Mark Helfrich. Sure everybody was saying that nothing was going to change, but you just don't know those variables until they manifest themselves. I really was only basing my opinion of the team based on the players they currently had and the coaches they retained, which was basically everybody, and what those particular people did on the field in the previous season. Does that make sense?

As far as preseason rankings, I know they'll never go away. That's how people make money. I suppose I was venting out of frustration more than anything.

I'm with you on the playoff though. Can't wait until we get a legitimate system in place to crown a champion.

BTW, I never come on here to argue or be aggressive towards anybody on NT. I really just like promoting discussion and seeing different viewpoints. Let's face it, the way college football is, there isn't one set method for determining who the best teams are and the guard always ends up changing (which I think is the best element of CFB). Opinions are all we have in regards to who the better programs are. I really do encourage everybody to speak their mind about what they think. Attacking somebody for their opinion about a game and then generalizing that experience to the entire fanbase or school is ridiculous. Let's just have a great discussion about the sport that we all love and enjoy the season.

Can't wait until tomorrow :pimp:

In legit 11-on-11 football, Aledo (Texas HS that UT RB Jon Gray went to) beat a team 91-0 last week. Had a parent from the other team file a formal complaint with the school district for bullying despite Aledo playing backups for damn near 3 quarters

If Stephen Morris was my quarterback I'd have the collective body language of a team that's about to lose to Wake Forest, too.

Miami already coming out looking uninspired.

Smh. Why is Duke always pulled on short yardage plays?
