Chart: How up-tempo offenses affect scoring defense and winning
PDF Print E-mail

Posted by: Pete Roussel on December 3, 2012

Twenty-five teams in college football averaged over 77 offensive snaps per game this season.

Of the twenty-five teams, only Bill Blankenship's team at Tulsa was able to win their conference championship. Jim Mora's squad at UCLA won the PAC-12 South, but not the outright PAC-12 championship.

Fast-paced offenses have become a trend in college football. More teams utilized an up-tempo rhythm during at least certain parts of the game this season.

Coaches, however, understand the up-tempo offense affects your own defense.

Today, I wanted to see exactly how defenses finished up in the category of scoring defense when their own offense utilizes a fast-break offense.

The most important statistic is winning. A year ago this week, Jon Gruden ('GruDawg' to Sean Payton) made it clear he hates those guys that quote all of the statistical bull***t.

There's no question, more than any time in college football, offenses and defenses have to complement each other. When they don't, coaches can end up losing their jobs.

Alabama averaged the 3rd fewest offensive snaps per game (63). The Crimson Tide will play for the national championship. Kansas State and Florida averaged 64 snaps per game. Both teams went 11-1. Notre Dame and Ohio State each averaged 70 offensive snaps per game, yet neither lost a game.

Here's the chart for you to print out and post in the staff room. The 'snaps' category refers to the average number of offensive snaps per game. The 'scoring d' column is the 'scoring defense' national ranking. (Sorry, the chart is not mobile-version friendly)

Click the link for the chart, wont format out well

Post the link to that

nevermind. I found it on the top of article

Dre, it is Elliot... as DC and recruiting coordinator. Good?

Never been a DC before and wasn't the RC at FSU.

But he is a great recruiter and a great DE coach. Very bright, he devised the game plan for the GT game. His ability as a DC will be mitigated by the fact that Stoops will likely be running the show. Will give him time to mature

Coach Cal said he's looking forward to working with Coach Stoops and would help him in any way he could... We straight there.

Kinda want to make the trip to Miami since tickets are only 150, however flight and hotel+ random yuckyness will end up adding to be too much for me and my friends lmao. Applied for tickets, if i get them, then :pimp:

It's awesome that the donor made the donation for yall to get the tickets half priced. have you heard around campus as to who made the donation? I've asked some friends from back home ( i used to live in Goshen) but they hadnt heard anything.

I wish I could go see my squad :smh: but I will be at the orange bowl if I can get the 31st off

Best players never win these awards  (*Jarvis Jones, IMO).

*Still baffled at how Matt Kalil got jobbed for the Outland last year,, that All Pro bonus he's getting this year will make up for that.

Oregon dropped Redfield.

It was mutual.

Just caught up with the thread...

-No non-Oklahoma fan wants to see Oklahoma in a BCS bowl anymo'
-Didn't see the B1G title game, but just looking at the score, wow, downright embarrassing. 8-5 Wisconsin team in the Rose Bowl, :smh:
- The way the SEC Title game ended, :wow:, I'm no Georgia fan by any means but even I was yelling at my TV.
- Saban almost blew it with that "Prevent" defense, abysmal. Maybe Smart will jump on that sword but if Bama would of lost "Oh boy!"

-Bowl games are pitiful as usual, no decent BCS Bowl games outside of the title game and I can see that one being a blowout. Oregon vs. KState can be decent, but better matchups will continue to elude everyone.
- NIU
- Wisconsin
- ****** year will end in a ****** town in a ****** bowl, :smh:... Damn...
- 2013 season can't get here fast enough.
- Can it be signing day already?

-Coaching Carousel is going to get exciting...

- Did someone say that the Rose Bowl has a Pac 12/B1G matchup only because of money...   It's called tradition and it's something that has been lacking as of late in college football due to the money grab. When the BCS came to be, the Rose Bowl, Pac 12 and B1G were the only ones to put their collective foot down. No offense to TCU, but seeing them in the Rose Bowl (Non-Title Game) a couple years ago... >D
