THE OFFICIAL 2023 DALLAS COWBOYS OFF-SEASON THREAD || Cowboys Gonna Cowboy

nice 1st post ... you're a day late though
Lol my bad I was in disbelief when I seen that story
A couple of knowledge people on Twitter worked things out so that Dallas would be 12 million under the cap next year. They literally had it done in less than half an hour after that report came out. Jerry, Stephen and Jason will have 9 months to figure things out.

Restructuring Romo and Ware saves 19 million, cutting Orton and Miles saves almost 9 million.

Just the media trying to push that Jerry doesn't know what he's doing again. As I said earlier, these types of articles come out every single season. And every single season Dallas is able to do whatever they want in free agency.

Adding the Cowboys to any story brings hits. That's why you see something random like that bs Murray story pop up, multiple teams will need to work some cap magic next year, not just Dallas.

Just lazy reporting.
Hope it does work out

Got the W so im happy. Defense was doing pretty good considering our injuries.

Is Alleged Cowboys’ 2014 Cap Going To Be A “Train Wreck’’?

Calculators all over Cowboys Nation are spitting sparks and being enveloped in smoke as a result of the ESPN report that alleged Dallas’ 2014 cap is going to be a “train wreck.’’

There is no argument here regarding the Cowboys’ cap challenges for 2014 – and that’s true whether you believe ESPN’s numbers (claiming Dallas is $31 million over) or numbers we’ve gathered (making it possible the Cowboys are $22 million over what we can project to be a $123-million cap). The argument is about “the train wreck,’’ and whether there are planned escape routes to avoid what is now perceived as some sort of head-on collision with financial disaster.

With the help of the capologists at Blogging The Boys, let’s battle through the sparks and the smoke to bullet-point our way to answers:

*Some league-wide perspective might be helpful. The Cowboys are presently scheduled to be over next year’s cap. As near as we can tell, 13 other teams might share that distinction. Does this mean almost half the NFL’s teams are about to “wreck’’? Or is there more media-attention value in mentioning Dallas’ circumstance than there is mentioning, say, Detroit’s or New Orleans’?

*Some historical perspective is also due. In 2011, Dallas faced “cap hell.’’ A “head-on collision with financial disaster.’’ Yessir, a “train wreck.’’ They were $18 million over the cap in July 2011. But … they never collided with a train. The Cowboys released Roy Williams, Marion Barber and Leonard Davis and restructured the contracts of Tony Romo, DeMarcus Ware and Miles Austin. Those moves allowed the re-signing of/extensions for players like Jason Witten, Doug Free and Jason Hatcher.

*In 2012? “Cap hell’’ once again was predicted due to $30 million of dead money. The how-to’s were so tricky that even owner Jerry Jones himself admitted to fearing “Armageddon.’’ But exec Stephen Jones oversaw moves that eventually allowed the over-the-cap Cowboys to sign Brandon Carr to a $50 million, five-year deal.

Not only was “Armageddon’’ avoided, but the Cowboys actually entered the season $12.6 mil under the cap.
*In 2013? Same song, different verse. The Cowboys started $20 million over the cap. But by the time the season arrived, they’d re-upped Romo and Sean Lee and left themselves plenty of room to also sign Brian Waters. (Oh, and I’m told they’ve also touched base with kicker Dan Bailey, with plans to retain him as well.)

*And here we are in 2014 … but wait. We AREN’T in 2014. Why is this a story for a first-place team in October? Why is Cowboys Nation suffering from hyperventilation and aneurysms NOW? That’s a question for ESPN to answer. Meanwhile, we’re busy with answers that truly matter inside Valley Ranch. … which will include the moving of some money and the dumping of some money … as occurs every year with Dallas and pretty much every team in the NFL.

Examples of options:
*The restructuring of the contracts of Romo and Ware alone, depending on how they are done, could create as much as $19 million in cap space in 2014. Forget for a moment whether that means more years on those deals and whether that’s advisable (in the case of Ware, perceived to be in physical decline, there may be more drastic measures considered). Just know that it is do-able … and a restructuring of those two deals moving $19 million essentially gets you near where you must be if you buy the $22-million-over number.

*Want more money, or different sources for it? Restructuring the contracts of Carr, Lee and Witten can be made to open up $12 million of room for 2014. In fact, the Romo and Lee deals are specifically built for a 2014 re-jiggering.

*Want to escape Miles Austin’s contract? He can be designated a June 1 release, thus creating $5.5 million in space.

*Ready to move on from veteran backups Kyle Orton, Mackenzy Bernadeau, and Phil Costa? Doing so would generate an additional $3.9 million of cap room in 2014.

*Want to give up on more non-standouts? Justin Durant and Jermey Parnell have contracts structured purposely with almost no prorated signing-bonus money. If they are released, that’s another $2.75 million of room. (Also available on many of these players: A Doug Free-like proposal where they cut their salaries to remain with the team.)

If Dallas were to pull the trigger on all the above? The Cowboys could generate about $43 million of cap space in 2014. … and be $10 to $20 million UNDER the cap.[/SIZE=5]

I don’t mean to treat the transactions needed to manage the NFL salary cap as simple or painless. But they are realities in every NFL city. And there are options in every NFL city. Worrying, “Will the Cowboys have enough money?’’ is a pointless endeavor. There might be a year when a good player is allowed to leave because of the cap (Anthony Spencer, before his injury, was going to be that in 2014.) Some year, there might be a handful of those, if affordable draftees don’t come through … and the team will suffer for a year and you will have your football version of Jerry’s “Armageddon.’’ Of course, then there will be the year after that, when cap room is ample and the process begins again.

Amid the sparks and the smoke, there’s no fearsome train bearing down on the Cowboys. All that’s coming is the continuous search for solutions.

Again..... lazy reporting by ESPN, just looking for clicks.

still look at ALL the work they have to do to just get 12 million under the cap, however you want to look at it the cap situation is not good

Don't think anyone is saying it's good, just saying it's by no means unworkable or a "train wreck".

It's the same song every year... You want them to do like the raiders and just cut everybody and still be in cap "hell" for two years to get rid of all the dead money?

I will never fault Jerry for our lack of success. The team he puts out every year for the past 7-8 years has been top 5 most talented each year. We just under achieve.

As for cutting Miles. I'm against it. I'm not against getting rid of him, but he could get us a 3rd or a 4th round pick easily. Considering out of the 9 lineman positions, we'll have to replace probably 5 of them, we need as many picks as possible.

A look back at Cowboys draft-day trade
October, 15, 2013
By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

It wasn't a draft-day trade that shook up the NFL, but it sure made waves in Dallas-Fort Worth.

he Cowboys swapped first-round picks with the San Francisco 49ers and acquired a third rounder this past spring. Dallas selected center/guard Travis Frederick in the first round, a player the Cowboys projected as a second-rounder. Wide receiver Terrance Williams was snagged in the third round.

Should the Cowboys have drafted a defensive lineman instead of Frederick?

It's easy to second-guess the decision given how the Cowboys have lost three projected defensive line starters to injuries. But Frederick has played well this season and Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said quarterback Tony Romo is more comfortable in the pocket.

"I know this, when you look at just strength, he's anchoring the center and the base of our offensive front there and I can't tell you how much confidence that's given our quarterback," Jones said Tuesday on KRLD-FM. "That was the key, how you get him feeling good."

In regard to Williams, the Cowboys are pleased with his progress. He's caught 18 passes for 309 yards and two touchdowns.

There were shaky moments such as a few drops in training camp, a wrong route that resulted in a Romo interception in the opener against the Giants and a fumble inside the 5-yard line in a loss to San Diego.

But Williams has improved along the way and become a reliable target for Romo when defenses take Dez Bryant and Miles Austin out of the game.

"I don't think any of us could have seen the kind of progress that he has made since training camp," Jones said. "It is there. He's such an overachiever [to go] along with some great physical talent. I'm really proud of the success he's having for all of us and he makes a big difference out there when you look at what we're going to be doing the rest of this year at receiver."

Yes, the Cowboys could have drafted a standout defensive lineman, but two of the players they selected, Frederick and Williams, have started the season strong.

I honestly see Spencer coming back. Shouldn't demand much coming off a season in which he didn't play a snap. Wouldn't surprise me to see Waters back either. And I don't see why they'd let go of Free. That DT spot is going to be hard to fill tho... Hayden has been terrible, his play has just been offset by J Hatcher. And Hatcher is playing great but he's 32. No way you can pay him at that age. That being said, regardless of how things shake out I'd like to see at least 5 picks spent on lineman. 3 of those on the Dline.

But we all know that won't happen

Cowboys signed Marvin Austin. Dude was a second rounder but had a poor work ethic. He has unbelievable talent and is a Marinelli guy. I think he's been humbled.

 @ the Cowboys giving him the #90

Shots fired.

Because Free is a penalty machine. He started off ok this year, but he is so undisciplined that anything he does well doesn't matter.

Spencer is going to go by track record, I don't see him going cheap.

Waters will be 37 next year, while he is still pretty good. 37 is 37.

I'd say first couple rounds on OLine / DLine. Once you get to Round 3 and beyond, your best bet is to draft the skills positions because they are likely to give you the best return on investment. And Free Agency on a #3 corner. We need to be able to swap out Carr & Claiborne during the game, and be able to count on someone to take a couple snaps.

I hope not  retaining Spencer could at least be a temporary fix. Can't imagine what Marinelli would be able to do with a healthy line :smh:

I know Waters will be 37 but until he slows down on the field don't think we should write him off. Many even on this thread said the same thing back in September, and he's turned out to be one of the best OG's in the league, again. At the very least he'd help the young guys we have on the line.

I'm not a D. Free fan but go check pff he has 3 penalties this year... Should we get rid of Tyron because he has twice that many?

If you've been a fan for more than a few years you already know JJ is going to over pay one of those old DLineman. (Not saying you haven't)

Also don't give him a break and don't drink the kool aid this has not been a top five team recently, really top heavy talent wise 5 great players and 48 just another guys.

Most penalized lineman in 2012.

Every year he has a plethora of penalties. Every year he has led the team.

He started off well this year, and I'll admit I don't like him, I don't think he is a good lineman. but I gave him some credit. The past 2 games, he has been EXTREMELY undisciplined. Why in the hell should we bring him back?

Let's wait until year 8, where he finally decides that he probably should learn the damn snap count.

Tyron Smith and Doug Free. 5 to 4 in penalties. If you count offsetting and declined penalties, they are 3-3. Also the difference between the two is that Tyron Smith is a VERY GOOD lineman. Whereas Doug Free is at best an average lineman with no discipline.

 Come on man Free has probably been the most surprising player on the team. He wasn't flagged a single time before Sunday. He is by no means a liability. If Dallas didn't cut him when he was absolutely garbage the past two years than they will not cut him when he's been one of the 5 best tackles in the league, so get used to him.

how about stop giving out bad contracts and big contracts to guys over 30? gotta start somewhere

B Carr this year :smokin

Yall boys already breaking down the draft for next year :smokin
Who are some good d-line cats in college?
And not worried about Detroit, because they are the Eagles with a better receiver.
We should manhandle them on both sides of the ball.

What happens with Hatcher will be a huge indicator on whether the team had truly changed their mind set or not.

Though they probably cant afford him anyways

Wilcox and Church are going to have to be on their A games helping Carr out on Calvin. I think we can man up against the other wideouts, but Fouria is also playing great this year. Limit Bush's big plays

We CANT allow suh and Fairley to get hits on Romo, just cant. I think Williams and Beasley continue to have big games with the attention Dez is getting.

Offense is going to have to put up points this week

Easy way to do that is run quick routes for TWill & Beas out of the slot. Get the ball out quick, and pick and choose the bomb.
