THE OFFICIAL 2023 DALLAS COWBOYS OFF-SEASON THREAD || Cowboys Gonna Cowboy

Sportac has a Manage Roster Feature that they just added...

We have 61 players on contract, and $6.179mil in cap space:

After Releasing:
Brandon Carr - (Saved almost $6.4mil)
Barry Church - (Saved $4.25mil)
Rod Smith - (Saved $525K)... 24, RFA after the season, and wouldn't have been in top 3 of our RBs this year.
Michael Hill - (Saved $525K)... 26 RFA after the season, definitely wouldn't have cracked the roster at any time
Vince Mayle - (Saved $525K).... Too many WRs in front of him, and if we pick up a late round WR, he likely goes behind them too.
Buddy Jackson - (Saved $450K)... 26 y.o. DB, that will never make the roster
Keith Smith - (Saved $600K)... He's still young, so you could cut the fat elsewhere, but not sure I want to pay him $600K to be a practice squad OLB
Terrence Mitchell - (Saved $600K) - 23 y.o. DB, but not much room for him for what he's getting paid, but like Smith, you could find fat elsewhere
Rodney Smith - (Saved $675K)... 25 y.o. WR with no future on the team.

Restructuring:
Doug Free - (Saved $1.55mil, which now goes into his signing bonus of $752.5K this year, and next year)

We would then have a 52man roster, and $22.194mil in salary cap space.

I dont think Hardy comes back, i just dont think the team wants to deal with what he brings. I think Mo is gone too, think he ready for a change of scenery.

For some reason i think they bring Carr back :smh:

not at that price tag

im on the ramsey and bosa train
but if we select a qb (assuming goff is available)...romo gets hurt this year (god forbid)..repeat this season..
that means we are back up high on the draftboard in 2017 with possibly a competent/above average qb brewing .....

it would be bad for the culture though..

What you guys think about Buckner in our system? Iknow he is more of a 3-4 end but when I see him is see JJ watt potential in the type of 4-3 we run. Pair him with Billings in the 2nd and the linebackers are running clean all game.

Cowboys gave a 2nd Round Tender to Ron Leary.

So he likely will not be going anywhere.. Because if a team offers him a contract and we let him go, we get pick compensation for 2nd Round.

He's backup Guard behind Collins & Martin... If Frederick gets injured, Martin will move to Center, and Leary fills in.

Different thought...

Besides Leary & Heath who have RFA tenders, and will almost certainly be back..

I'd like to see them bring back
1. Rolando McClain
2. Lance Dunbar
3. Kyle Wilber
4. Nick Hayden and/or Jack Crawford.

None of those guys are going to get paid. And all solid contributors.. Also whatever you think about Rolando, we can't afford to try to replace another position on defense..

(I would still keep an Eye on Greg Hardy & Mo Claiborne's Free Agency, and if it goes down in flames, swoop in and get a favorable deal for us)

Need to focus exclusively on defense in Free Agency & Round 1 in the draft.

It would be nice to go after say Jaye Howard to play 1-tech next to Crawford... And Casey Hayward/Jenoris Jenkins at DB... We need a big splash FA signing due to the amount of holes we have on defense.

Word is we can figure out how to keep Carr, and re-structure his deal in a way that saves us the same amount as cutting him, but puts him at an extra year. If that's the case, might as well do that.

And I'm fully sold with Jalen Ramsey at # 4. Ramsey & Byron Jones at the Safety Positions would be so much fun.

We'd still have Church & Heath as backups (They should cut JJ Wilcox), which could allow us to occasionally sneak Ramsey or Jones into DB if injuries require.

essential1 essential1 How do you feel about the RB position? :nerd:

I'm fully on board with Ramsey as well if we stay put at #4 (still rather trade down a few spots and pick up some more assets while we can because I don't expect to be drafting in the Top 5 next season)

I'm fine with McFadden & Dunbar... But I know we have to get another guy because McFadden is gone after this season, and Dunbar has injury history..

Think Ramsey tests out too well in the combine to not go after him. And when you put him next to Byron who is the freakiest of athletic freaks, you got something far better than the extra asset, or say a 3rd Round Pick...

Even if Ramsey is gone, I'd still take Bosa # 4 rather than trade down.. We should have been a better team, but got hit with every injury possible.. And we got lucky to end up 4th, as opposed to like 12-13 by winning a couple extra games...

I'd go
#4: Ramsey / Bosa
2nd Round....Derrick Henry if he's available.
If Henry is gone, push for Devontae Booker in Round 3.

If We got Ramsey/Bosa & Henry... Come back Round 3, and really have a surveyed landscape of QBs and DBs.

I'm not sold on DMC or Dunbar staying healthy.

Hopefully they go after someone in FA as well as draft a younger back. Can't have Tony out there with one shoulder chucking the ball 45+ times every week.

Nervous about Cowboys taking Jalen Ramsey at #4. It has the Claiborne 2012 draft feeling. Cowboys were between Luke Kuechly and Claiborne that year.

Also Romo got hurt 2010 and 2011 and McGee was our backup....

In my perfect world :

I'd like to go Ramsey at 4 if hes there, which i have my doubts about. Go DT in the second round and RB/QB in the third.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone grabbed Leary this is a poor guard class and if not for his knee I'd be sure of it

Also essential1 essential1 as much as I'd like Henry for this team (don't like him almost anywhere else due to his poor short area quickness) gotta take a DT at 34

I'm beginning to like Buckner over bosa having him mocked to the Cowboys made me check him out and he's definitely more athletic than bosa thus having more of an upside

Claiborne was never a freak athlete he was a man corner that was just better than the receivers in the sec at the time (even handled AJ green) never was he Patrick Peterson or jalen Ramsey

Give me prosise in the 4th for a stop gap till the real backs all come out next year chubb/fournette etc...

Just saw the money the Giants have Janoris Jenkins. Sheesh.... Wanted him, glad we didn't even get close.

Just saw the money the Giants have Janoris Jenkins

12 mil a year? No thanks...

Janoris Jenkins' career cover stats:

Yds allowed: 2,989 (3rd most since '12 by CB)
TD allowed: 22 (3rd)

Glad we resigned McClain, kinda' wanted a 2 year deal but how he's coming off that suspension last year maybe it's too risky. For now, he's a filling a gap we can't afford to replace in the draft of FA. Great player for the Cowboys but we will have to find a player long term.

I feel like he'll likely get like 2 more years of 1 year deals after this...

Just seems like that is where this is headed
