Think about it. Every major city in America has major artist. NYC, ATL, LA, Miami, Chicago, etc....

I swear its like people raised in this area can't rap.

Nobody in the 90's or 2000s was hot....how is that even possible?

Now you have Wale, Fat Trel, Tabi, Black Cobain, Shi Glizzy, King Pin Slim? C'mon that roster is worse than the Wizards last season.

Wale is the best to ever do it and thats kinda crazy if you think about it. :smh:

anyway is it because of Gogo? Whats the reason the urea doesn't have better rappers?

You must just mean DC & MD

VA has plenty of rappers, and some of the best producers are from VA

Clipse are from DMV no?

Nah...

...the 757 is a totally different world (well not really, but that's like 3/4 hours down the road so it'd be like tryna link LA with The Bay).

And while we're at it - this "DMV" stuff is new...

...either your from DC, or you're not - and that's not a knock to MD/VA, but in the past there was never a time when it was all lumped together.

And yeah, gogo did play a huge role in the stifling of the city's hip hop scene...

...but as the city's bein' gentrified, gogo is bein' washed out :frown: .

And all sneak dissers (that's that **** I don't like) with corny "foam" jokes will be blocked and put on my "life-long enemy" list...

I was in DC back in June. This dude came up to me and the people I was with and said he was Shy Glizzy's manager and asked if we heard of Shy Glizzy. We all hit him the  and said nah we ain't from around here. Fast forward to last month and I came across his Chief Keef diss, that **** is horrible. :x

Some old DC **** :pimp:

I hate how they've grouped Maryland, DC and VA into one "DMV" hate that term with a passion.
I was born in 91 and grew up with people being from Maryland or DC or VA, not all three.

Maryland is split because of the difference of cultures/styles between PG County and Baltimore.
DC is DC
VA is just Northern VA

But to answer your question, it's because we grew up wanting to be in gogo bands. The south didn't claim us, the North didn't claim us so it was like screw rapping and being the next Pac, Big, etc. it was more I want to be the next Chuck Brown or Big G. Or i want to learn how to play the drums or the guitar, the girls love gogo bands so I want that groupie love

Its not like we dont have people here can rap, few people make it out to radio or "mainstream" because everyone is so focused on beefing with the next man.

Shy Glizzy can't rap, but all the kids here from 10-16 love him because they sound alike.
Trel needs to go back to his No Secrets flow
Black Cobain...he's grows on you....slowly...very slowly
Kingpin Slim.........

And Fat Rodney was supposed to be the first from The City that made it out

I've always wondered about that "DMV" label too. Seems like you can take any 3 states that are close to each other and group them like that.

anyway is it because of Gogo? Whats the reason the urea doesn't have better rappers?

 I know what you meant, but  You basically said "What's the reason the piss doesn't have better rappers"

Three reasons.

1. Go-go is the dominant music genre of the area.  The hip hop scene never flourished like it did in other cities during the 90's.

2. Their sheer disdain of all things North of the Beltway.  Yeah they mess with some guys but they never full embrace people from "up north".  So that traditional lyricism was never embraced.

3. They barely support the dudes from DC who can actually spit (Tabi, Wale) instead choosing to support exported, not so lyrical talent (Gucci, Waka)

The DMV has always been here.....it was just called the NCR or North Capitol Region or the DC Metro area even. If you work in that area you know what I mean.

DMV has more to do with just music. Its based on our similar culture. A PG dude can relate to a DC dude who can relate to a Del Rey dude. Simple as that.

Most of the so called URBAN people that live in Northern VA only moved to Northern VA because they were economically FORCED out of DC. The same goes for PG dudes. Its safer and cheaper to raise your family in VA than DC. At least the Teachers are better and more jobs are available.

You will see WAY more DC dudes in VA soon, Southeast is getting a WALMART YALL!!!!!!!!!!!

Where in NoVa would someone go to live if they were economically forced out of DC. Everything in NoVA is expensive as hell.

If anything the people that are forced out of the city mostly end up in PG county where the cost of living is by far the cheapest in the area.

Why would someone who is forced out of an area move to someplace that might be equally or even more expensive?

Baltimore not in the DMV, but me and one of my homeboys that rap was just talking bout why dudes suck in this city...it doesnt make sense especially with alotta rappers talking bout drugs and catching bodies, bmore rappers could make songs for days bout all that

I guess you've never been to woodbridge, the working class neighborhoods of Alexandria/Arlington/Falls Church, or Manassas...
Anyway, there's plenty of talent in the area, and IMO, DC is on the come-up, but locals don't support, too much "crabs in a bucket" mentality. The fact that SO many people dislike Wale SOLELY for NOT being EXACTLY from DC (he grew up in MoCo and PG) is pretty sad... Although i'm not a fan of the term "DMV" (sound like the place you go to get your license renewed) I acknowledge that there are MANY cultural/economical similarities between Minorities in all three areas and IMO its pretty obvious. The same way SNOOP reps LA (although from Long Beach), I def feel someone from Del Rey, Landover and Silver Spring can ALSO rep DC.

OP, most folks on here have given great reasons as to why this area has been stagnant in terms of contributing to hip hop, but fortunately, that is slowly starting to change.

BTW, why isn't this on the DC/MD/VA forum? Better question, I see SOOOO many NTers on the boards from the "DMV" yet barely any of you post in the local forum... What's good?
