If Russ really wanted to be the man he wouldn't have taken less money to be the #2 guy. He did that so he can win.

Not sure how you came to this. He got an 80 mil dollar contract extension. His value wasn't as high back then and people considered that to be too much at that time. He got paid and doesn't have to take the fall like KD if they lose. Not questioning whether he's a team player or not but let's not act like he took a huge cut to be a loyal Thunder

But when they lose its Russell's fault and when they win its because if KD

how does george karl get coach of the year with the job thibs has done this season. yeah nuggets won a ton of games in the west but still, they had their full squad, bulls didn't.

he probably got the award because he had so many wins AND he had to coach javale mcgee

if you make any of the all nba teams twice, as westbrook has.. you qualify for a higher max figure contract..

so he could have gotten the same extension that derrick rose got: 5 years 94.8 million

and he accepted 5 years 80 mill (as you stated).. also of note is that durant had already signed his extension, so OKC still had their 5 year distinction available

also neither player included 'opt out/player option' clauses within their contracts

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_salary_cap#cite_note-11

The maximum amount of money a player can sign for is contingent on the number of years that player has played and the total of the salary cap. The maximum salary of a player with 6 or fewer years of experience is either $9,000,000 or 25% of the total salary cap (2010–11: $14,511,000), whichever is greater. For a player with 7–9 years of experience, the maximum is $11,000,000 or 30% of the cap (2010–11: $17,413,200), and for a player with 10+ years of experience, the maximum is $14,000,000 or 35% of the cap (2010–2011: $20,315,400).[sup][9][/sup]

Under the 2011 CBA, maximum salaries, as expressed as a percentage of the cap, remained mostly unchanged. However, a player coming off his rookie scale contract is eligible to sign for 30% of the cap if he was voted to start in two All-Star Games, was named to an All-NBA Team twice, or was named MVP. This was dubbed the "Derrick Rose Rule" after the 2011 MVP.[sup][10][/sup] In addition, newly signed contracts now have a maximum duration of five years for players with Bird rights and four years for all other players (including sign-and-trade acquisitions).[sup][5][/sup] Every team is allowed one "designated player" who receives a five-year maximum extension on his rookie scale contract.

Poor attitude? Do explain.

Do you mean passion and intensity for the game. Selling out for your teammates every play on the court. Sacrificing the body at will if it means a W.

Just playing the devil's advocate here, remember its a regular season award. The only way to measure the impact of a coach is by win-loss. The nuggets finished 3rd in a stacked west, and no they weren't full strength. The dubs finished 6th. the bulls finished 5th in a weak eastern conference just a game up on the Hawks. Only other coaches possibly in the conversation are Woodson or Vogel.

Thibs deserves the award for managing to draw out consistent effort and pestering team defense every night out. Without Rose, without Deng at times, without Jo at times. Ended Miami's winning streak under-manned.

Chicago also lost vital parts of their "Bench Mob." Yet the new parts seemed to click under Thibs rather quickly.

All that's true, but the Nuggets were projected to be very good before the season started. Most people had them at 3rd in the West behind OKC and the Lakers (remember, I'm talking about before the season started). So, they did about as well as people expected. On the other hand, Golden State wasn't expected to even be a playoff team necessarily and they finished 6th in the loaded West. That should have factored into the vote, IMO.

If George Karl had the same amount of talent but was a defensive minded coach instead, he'd be labeled a 'grinder' and just short of brilliant.

That Nuggets team was not 57 win talented. But his system enhanced what they could do, especially at home. No problem with him getting that award, it's for the regular season.

Complete nonsense. Russ was a max player already at that time and as mentioned, could have gotten 95 mil but instead took 80. And nobody ever says anything negative about KD in the media, quite the opposite Russ is always the lightning rod for criticism.

not quite like doing the head pound with D Miles but that middle aged white guy will do I guess

Crazy to think Shump was probably in the 5th or 6th grade when Q Rich and Miles were doing their thing in LA

And if anybody cites George Karl's playoff failure as a reason why he isn't deserving of winning coach of the year...... Well then you're an idiot.

Good game by the Knicks, but I saw first hand father time with that Kenyon Martin off the glass dunk, 10 years ago it would have been more explosive. Last night it just did not look the same when J-Kidd was throwing them of the glass with them both playing on the Nets.....

I thought it known it is almost impossible to win this award multiple times

there are only 5 coaches who have won it multiple times
