Of course this is your response

I don't think ninja understands what a democracy is

except da United States isn't a Democracy.

He means that technically it's a Republic. He's not wrong, but he's not really right either.

The United States is not a pure/direct democracy. It is "still" :rolleyes an indirect democracy. A representative democracy (i.e a republic) is still a form of democracy

He is wrong

it's a constitutional republic.

cut it out.

Educate yourself.

It can be both a constitutional republic and a indirect democracy.

Many of our major representatives are chosen through a direct democratic process. BTW, at the state level we vote on ballot measures (which direct democracy)

It is a democracy. It is just not a direct democracy.

There are different forms of democracies.

I saw two links

One says that a republic is a democracy but not vice verse

The other article said that a democracy is a type of republic but not reversed.

Guess it just depends on one's viewpoint

*Ye shrug*

It's not really a matter of opinion.

Because democracy couldn't be practiced in large communities the way it was in Athens (direct, where people gathered in the Agora to vote on stuff), leaders came up with variations of it, among which was the republic.

Notice how ninja misdirected us and got us arguing about semantics when we should be talking about how Trump is trying to turn the US towards fascism

Full blown oligarchy bordering on authoritarian nationalist society.
In the Holocaust museum right now...
We have something like this as well in the National Center for Civil & Human Rights museum here in Atlanta. I believe it was an early warning sign's of genocide they didn't allow pictures so I couldn't take one.

Point being is that this stuff has happened throughout history and the signs are there why take the chance repeating this history

Word, that Yates firing statement was scary

@jonfavs: The job of the Attorney General is loyalty to the law, not the President.

Bingo

Son is gonna be demanding full loyalty above the law and constitution from his cronies...

Altright playbook memorized af.

Focus on everything but what matters. When the focus turns to what matters, shift blame to the left or just deny facts.

Or also just play the victim

It's semantics. This entire argument is pointless.

ya da ones dying to correct da record, hyperbole is what got ya here in da first place... Authoritarian comparison and Trump don't even have 3 weeks in yet.

It's low-key genius.

No matter how ridiculous things can be, there will always be cronies they want to cozy up to the power.

There will be no shortage of people that will sign up for it.

And  at ninja contriving a mastermind plan to deflect from Trump by inciting a semantics argument.

Y'all either giving him too much credit or not giving y'all selves enough credit..

False sense of security and assurance that "it could never happen here"

And those guys are quite sloppy with it tbh.

My grandparents fought with Mao and the CCP against the Guomingdang, they fought for freedom, economic opportunity, fear of the west and the 'real China'. It wasn't until my father was born when they realised that they had been sold a false dream by an autocratic dictator. My family barely made it through the cultural revolution. My grand-father was arrested in 1957 in the anti-rightest movement. After having shed blood for his country. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the tenor and tone of American political discourse today scares me in ways that is hard to explain. This idea of nationalism, ethnocentrism, and isolationism that Donald Trump is selling is a toxic falsehood that can very easily lead to things that run utterly counter to what America represents. An institution is only as strong as the people in it and the American government is filled with the worst kind of people right now.

To the Trump supporters I would say that I can speak from personal knowledge how tempting the idea of extreme nationalism is. This idea of safety and America first is tempting but ultimately only benefits those that Trump chooses to include in his version of America. Once you start defining what it means to be a patriot, what freedom entails and what a true American is, discourse starts failing and those in charge start gaining more political power. Always question. You may have won but being able to participate in politics in real terms is a privilege I have never been able to experience. Take advantage of that and don't rest on your laurels. You may have beaten the "liberals" but Donald Trump is not your ally. I can promise that.

I don't know if its right for me as a Chinese national studying in your country to criticise as I know its a privilege for me to be here at all. And I apologise if I cause any offence by my comments. Its just in my own country, regardless of the economic growth we've seen in recent times, I have experienced first hand the dangers of state falsehoods, delegitimisation of media, and consolidation of power. I have the utmost respect for America and everything it represents and it breaks my heart to see America start to go down this road that I have seen before. America is beautiful to me because it welcomes Muslims, Chinese, Japanese and other immigrants not despite it. It's beautiful because I have been welcomed to your country by so many people despite not having been here more than two years. And I hope and believe it will continue to be beautiful for many years to come.

From here:

Encapsulate how I feel about the whole situation right now. It isn't a matter of liberal vs conservative. The power that you have given this man might never be given back if you're not careful.
