***Official Political Discussion Thread***

Tebow, I will assume you're having trouble with the code and not trying to put words in my mouth.

But let us be serious, things can get much worse for black Americans in this country (they will under Trump), they were worst decades ago.

One can make the argument that progress has been made, and that things are still very bad. Those two arguments are not mutually exclusive.

The system of white supremacy has transformed multiple times. Nearly every time is has been in response to black people gaining some new right. Racist had to fine new ways to marginalize the black community.

It is ridiculous to me that so many black people like to play the "ain't nothing changed" card. It is not only disrespectful to past generation that got terrorized and plundered on a level not seen today, it is intellectually lazy argument to make. We have to know the enemy, the enemy is white supremacy, and it is a moving target.

Ceding the marginal gains we have accomplished, and hoping that enough our people get martyred to start some "revolution", is not the path I want to take.

The truth is Blacks don't have nothing to lose. The Dems and Repubs have both played a role in destroying the lives of Black folk. We live in a racist society that will never change. After Trump is done destroying the lives of muslims and immigrants, B lacks are next. The next President won't do ish for Blacks and this will continue until we all die. I have no hope for this country sadly. Dems will continue going to the center because they don't want to lose votes from rural and working class Whites. Blacks and others will continue to be disenfranchised from voting and their votes will mean less in the future. The country is becoming more diverse, but the structure in place won't allow progress for the marginalized. We really have nothing to lose because we don't have nothing and this country isn't designed for us to have anything. A small minority will progress but the majority will remain marginalized and hopeless.

This is such a defeatist mentality. You should be ashamed of yourself.

It's a sad reality. How are we going to catch up after 400 + years of oppression?

Society tolerates oppression. Our country has enough $ to fix things but they won't because the oppressed are blamed for their marginal existence. I just try to do me and live my life. I'm not hopeless or defeated just know that this country isn't for me so I try to move in a way to stay out of prison, the morgue or a homeless shelter.

Listen, it won't happen it your lifetime, come to terms with that.

All you can do is fight for what marginal gains you can make, and do it as long as you can. Pooling resources, learning public policy (this is especially important for people like you), and being extremely involved in the political process will help. Sometimes sizeable progress will be made, some none, sometimes you're playing defense.

There is no magic bullet to solve everything, but if you care, you need to fight for every inch you can. Civil Rights took generations to accomplish, and failed many times before something was accomplished.

The only way to change this country is a revolution, but that will never happen. We're way too divided, all you have to do is tell someone they aren't Black and they will accept their marginal existence and bow down to White Supremacy. This race ish they use to divide us is brilliant. Race and Religion.

I agree but should we continue to call minor steps progress? Look at Flint, Baltimore, etc. How will what you've just said change the lives of folks who live in delapadated row houses? How you gonna pull resources together when you don't even have loosie money? How can we get street cats in hoods of America to become politically active when many of them are struggling to put food on the table or have felonies?

everybody, left and right, seems to want and expect massive change from our elected politicians.

secret: change can go backwards too. see: trump.

what's wrong with settling for steady progress? why do we at every ******* election say that this is the year for change?

i understand people are suffering and that there is injustice in this country that we should not tolerate. but not every president needs to be a messiah. usually change is driven by the public too.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend towards justice without a force applying pressure. Every single marginal gain applies that pressure.

And I don't expect the same actions from every black people, white supremacy affects the lives of different black people in different ways, partly because racism is not the only type of oppression many black folk face. Moving America towards a socially democratic state will help, targeted programs will help, charitable work will help.

You're just using one example to throw up your hands.

where do you see this country in 20 years?

If you vote Dem in 2020, we will be find, demographic will be moving us toward a more progressive nation

If you don't vote Dem in 2020, then we ******. Ninja buys two Hemi off of renting out his closet space on AirBnB, coal country is poppin too much and we live in a constant state of smog nationwide, hardcore white supremacist like David Duke hold public office. And Chad Hazelton is the new Attorney General.

So the fate of the country rest on your shoulders b.

As much as I'm a big "Bernie bro", the comments he made about Perez were quite divisive.

And at the end of day, Ellison and Perez are working together. People who say that the Democrats aren't open to new ideas are being tone deaf right now considering that Democrats are now trying to encompass a wider base. For the Bernie Bros, yes it "sucks" that your mans didn't get elected to the main chair, but so what? He's still part of the damn party and is doing important things. It's time to make some damn progress instead of this inside party division crap.

Can't Blame folk for not being motivated to vote for folk. It's up to the political party to inspire their base to turn out to vote.
Trump should have been enough motivation. The problem is that a lot of people are shortsighted and won't care until it directly affects them. It's kind of like how people never take new influenza viruses seriously unless a lot of people are dying.

No one ever really believed Trump would win.

If you ran the election back the next day Hilary wins in a landslide

Yea. We may never know for sure but I'd like to think that the polls depicting Trump as a massive underdog leading up to election day made the Democratic base complacent and energized the Republicans.

I tell my students the same thing that I yell you guys. Progressives need to bifurcate in the same way that conservative activists. Progressives need to show up on election day and vote straight Democratic all the way down the ticket from President to municipal vice comptroller.

The rest of the time, complain like crazy to the Democratic Party and your local Democratic elected officials. Between that and the fact that you're now voting in big numbers, the Democratic Party will take notice. Once DNC pollsters see that 18-30 year old white guys are suddenly voting Democratic (especially if its in midterm and State wide elections) they will reward that group and give more weight to their issues.

Show the Democratic Party that you're a powerful and consistent voting bloc and you'll start to get your way more and more. I wish that the Democratic Party had the foresight and audacity to actively bring white male college students and recent graduates into the coalition in big numbers and deny the Republican Party its future base of voters. Sadly, the nature of political Parties is inertia so it falls to the "Bernie bros" to help the democratic party win some elections and force the DNC to take a more economically leftward stance.

The secret of American Apparel was that very few of our workers were Americans

I chuckled.
