Because at 15$ a haircut 15 a day is 225$. and then out of that 15 average tip 3$ is another 45$ add that to the 225 is 270$ a day. 5 days a week is 1350$.

but barbers said they were broke and they got there car repossessed really?

You have to figure in the booth fee but it's not guaranteed that everybody is getting a full cut.

What about overhead costs such as the lease, insurance and utilities? Repairs? Supplies? Magazine Subscriptions?

its just like preachers its all about your clientele, noriety, and the ability to sell urself and the brand/image.... I mean if done correctly you can really make some bank... considering money under the table not reported, the tax right offs etc... its one of those professions that falls under "legal drug money"

Who said barber's make bank? A select few are truly stacking and those are the ones with extensive clientele (~10-15 clients/day) and own their shops. Being a barber is a very risky job for some of the reasons already stated. My cousin is one of the lucky ones who owns and has high profile clients.

The owners of shops have a lot to pay for. Shop upkeep. Machine maintenance/replacements. Entertainment (magazines/cable). Utility bills (water/electric/phone bills). Added to the fact that 15 heads a day at 5-6 days a week is highly optimistic.

If the owner, who has built up a decent repore among customers (enough to have opened a shop in the first place), isn's assured 15 heads daily, the regular dudes that work at the shop damn sure won't be cutting that many. Then they have to pay weekly booth fees. So essentially, they're paying just to have a job.

It's definitely not what some people think as far as monetary gain. My uncle has owned a decent shop here in Atlanta for the past 10 years, so I've seen this stuff first hand. It's anything but easy.

this is the reason why nt general is falling off

It all depend on location, clientele and the barber. Dude that cuts my hair usually cut about 20 a day 6 days a week. On average he is paid $20-30 a cut. So we can say 2400-3600 minus chair rental and new blades etc. it all depend on those factors. I know personally he makes bank since we grew up together. Like Sneaky said a lot of barbers act like they are making money when they really aren't. It's all a skill. If you have that skill you can charge what you want and people will pay.

My barber makes decent money.

5 days a week about about 300-400 a day and yhe doesnt take walks, hes so busy you have to make an apt, 10-7 every day, fri and sat he'll do 9-8/9

he makes money and hes smart.

issue is these other barbers who arent consistent make 300 one day and 100 the next but continue to live off that 300 day.

Clients and location... Is the key. Your location gives access to clients. Big cities make it possible to charge more15 - 20. Suburbs 10- 15. Booth rent (chair) food. Gas. Transportation. You can make 600 a week but only take home 250- 300

Where is your uncle's shop?

My cousin cuts hair at a higher-end salon. $35 for men's cut and ~$45 for women's. Colors and highlights, $50 and $70.

About 12-14 clients a day. Makes ~$600 per day. Splits 50% with company. Company also deducts 15% for tax. Brings home 35% of $600 = 210... + 110 tip. $320 a day. Works 6 days a week. You can work the rest of the math out if you want weekly, monthly, and yearly earnings. Keep in mind you also have to pay about 30% tax of your salary. Tips by cash don't need to be reported for tax. Even at a higher-end hair salon, he's not "caking," so it would be hard to imagine barbers at lower tiers making a lot of bank. However, this amount of salary is definitely not bad for someone with only a high school degree, and is enough to maintain a decent living lifestyle. He is #25 in the company - the top employee makes almost twice the amount he makes.

But to answer OP's question, being a barber is one of the lower paying jobs out there.... average salary range is 25K to 35K
