After reading some of the recent struggles of fellow members and seeing how NT is a very philanthropic organization, whare are some other's thoughts on creating some sort of scholarship/fund for members in need. Whether it be a college scholarship to assist with tuition, an emergency fund for someone experiencing a crisis, or some other sort of criteria.

Just thought I would bring up the topic for discussion.

I think a college book fund would be greatly appreciated....buying textbooks is the slap in the face for a lot of college students since they have to purchase the new edition that has 98% of the same content the previous edition does for twice the price.

It's Been a long time coming I think it would work very well

I now know how my girl feels when she has to directly ask me if she looks beautiful. Reaching for compliments like I was reaching for responses on this thread.

Thanks though, appreciate it.

I figured even enough for a semester's worth of tuition, books or housing would do wonders for a hungry, determined NTer who might come from a struggling situation.

count me in with that Semester book fund idea, I'll donate if it's set up right.

A school supply fund would work wonders. We can get laptops, software, books, stationery even backpacks . It would need to be atleast 15,000. Thousand dollars total and the members would need to have counselors who check on their work and progress .Say your behind on a paper you can hit up Method Man and other volunteers to help you write it an official NT school Skype line with designated hours etc

how do we know if they are in need tho? good idea if we can get past people trying to take advantage.

+1

I'm down. Now that I'm out of school I definitely would like to help some NTers that are struggling in college just like most of us did.

Anybody familiar with how scholarships are set up and the process for disseminating them?

I'm sure we would need some sort of application process, panel of judges/review, way of verifying transcripts/financials, etc.

I like the ideas fellas. I can remember being in college and working overnight at the UPS factory with an 8 am class, a $1,000 extra for books or tuition would have been much appreciated. :smokin

i just buy the international version of my book. it comes in english is brand new and cost 60 bucks compared to the 270 that the bookstore wanted

book fund would be cool.

or like a book exchange. NT Library type deal..

This is a great idea! I remember having to spend nearly $500-700 every semester on books alone (And that was only for community college)

How would Meth implement this type of idea?

I'm indifferent towards establishing a fund.

As far as college books go, people just need to be more educated as to their options when it comes to getting books. Your school library/ies will have most if not all the books you need. You can rent the textbook if you can't borrow it. You can also go to websites like Chegg to rent books at a fraction of the retail price. Buying older editions of the book saves money as well. Interlibrary Loan if your school does not have the book you need. If you are buying textbooks it should be because you need them then and there and even if you do, they should be used so that you can return them when you find a cheaper alternative.

There are scholarships out there outside of what your school offers in the financial aid package. Whether or not you want to win them is up to you. Its not easy winning one, but nothing is.

The thing is we can't vet our members thoroughly to make sure it's going to the right people, other organizations can and that's why it's usually best to work through someone else as the middle man for these type of things.

This is true as well. Some sort of extensive interview process/verification to ensure it wasn't going to some undeserving person who was trying to get a pair of galaxy foams or yeezys.

Well damn. Debbie downer. Kidding, all valid points.

Just trying to brainstorm/bounce ideas around and maybe something positive will emerge.

I think a better idea would be to start a thread in which people talk about different grants and scholarships that people can apply to.
There is no way someone can properly monitor this and not get compensated for their time.

I would just like to see some sort of function or process for members who might be older/doing well who want to give back to up and coming members. Ennnnh who knows. |I

This is a good idea, however determining whether or not someone is struggling would be very difficult especially through the interwebz. All sorts of people would just be coming here looking for a come up talking bout they broke and need money for that psychology 101 textbook when in reality they just looking for some bread to buy some foams.

Maybe one of the mods will chime in. I know folks have a lot going on with the transition to Huddler and have their attention spread thin, but I think NT is at the point/stage where we can start giving back to it's members. A true community.

I'm all for it

BUT years ago someone asked the same question. In sum the mods said NO b/c the charities that NT donates to oversees are more important. They basically said those charities need the $ to survive and the college fund is something that is merely beneficial....... I disagree b/c I think college is extremely important to many people, but that's just my opinion.

Welp if you want something done sometimes, you just have to do it yourself. I would be willing to lead these efforts. Open to any input/suggestions about processes and structure.

If we could get about $1,000 for the first year that would be pretty solid for starters. I would have no problems creating some application documents or developing some sort of charter/proposal for the scholarship. I would put up money for the fund as well.
