Giants, Cain consider surgery -- but not Tommy John

SAN FRANCISCO – The Giants will make a decision soon on whether Matt Cain will undergo arthroscopic right elbow surgery to clean out bone chips and other debris.

The good news: He doesn’t require any repairs more drastic than that.

Cain sought a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews, who examined the right-hander on Wednesday. The Giants received his recommendation and were “digesting it,” GM Brian Sabean said via text message.

Cain’s ulnar collateral ligament checked out fine. He does not require a Tommy John procedure, nor did anyone on the Giants staff believe that to be the case when they sent him to Dr. Andrews. The consultation was about the chips and other loose bodies in his elbow, which cause recurring inflammation. The swelling hasn’t subsided this time even though Cain received a cortisone shot prior to the All-Star break and the Giants tried to give him 12 days between starts.

If Cain undergoes surgery to clean out his elbow, he likely would miss the remainder of the season but would be recovered in time to have a normal winter and operate nearer to his usual routine as he prepares for 2015.

Cain is owed $20 million in each of the next three seasons.

I've been saying for years that we don't don't a scouting budget. It's obvious as ****.

Thanks for posting that coachred80baugh

Daniel Murphy, Asdrubal Cabrera or Emilio Bonifacio could have been had. Upgrades yes but neither is "saving the day"

Just heard the conference call Sabean made with the media after the deadline... he sounded awful physically drained as if he had been making deals all day. :smh:

From AA straight to the show...usually chances are you have heard of the player(s) before a two step leap. Lets see how this works from the looks of it Parker was chosen over Gary Brown.

I hope we at least see Gary in september. I know he's the not prospect he was a few years ago, but I'd still like to see what we can do in the bigs.

Apparently Duffy was raking in AA, which is a pitcher's league

That game was 2:06...that has to be the quickest game played all year. I wish this team played at home like they do on the road.

YES!!!!! No blank0

Peavy gets absolutely no offense. He's the new Vogelsong. I'm still pissed at Morse. I'm so done with this dude. He's in the same boat as Blanco and Scutaro as far as I'm concerned
