Official 2017 San Francisco Giants Season Thread (20-30) vs. Atlanta Braves (05.26 - 05.28) - Page 54

You don't think the Giants should try to unload on some of the "assets" that this team has? Why not try to move Pence when he may have some value(according to some insiders)? If I were the Giants I'd listen to anything that doesn't include Bumgarner or Posey. Offense is horrible and bringing back the majority of them next year would be crazy.

We need to Trade Pablo now! He has no desire to get or stay In Shape
post #1593 of 9789
We should sell. As far as pitching I think Lincecum would be gone if they felt Kickham or Surkamap could bring anything to the table.

As far as Pence Sabean has had a man crush on him since we have picked him up and he's already said he'd like to sign him to a long term deal. He's making nearly 14 million this year and he's probably looking for a 3 or 4 year deal in a couple months. Don't think he's worth it.

How are you guys feeling about Romo? I know the last couple outings he's struggled but I still think he has the stuff when he's focused to get 45-50 saves a year.
I still don't think Romo is a closer. Great Setup guy!
I like Romo, but I'd also trade him if he has good value.
Romo definitely isn't a 45-50 save a year guy. But like jumpman said, he's an excellent setup guy.

I'd trade whoever isn't under contract next year for anything we can get, and I do mean anything. These guys are hitting the market in the offseason, might as well get something for them.

Yeah I love Romo as a setup guy but iffy about him as a closer. But why trade him? He still has a year on his contract after this one. I can see Pence, Lopez and possibly Timmy(although hes looked way better as of late. Maybe hes re-learned how to pitch?) being traded but they better get prospects in return that are on the verge of being major league ready. Belt is a complete failure and we should listen if teams are interested in Pablo. This team desperately needs more RBIs and power from it's corner positions. I swear that's been the story for the last 4 yrs. sick.gif If they trade any of these guys I want starting pitching or power hitting corner outfielders/infielders. Don't want to see a complete fire sale tho...

Ownership group needs to open up the checkbook(both with free agent acquisitions and scouting and strengthening our player development I remember Neukom got canned because they said he was spending too much money on that wtf sick.gif) a lil more Giants' fans deserve it. Need to take advantage while a rare player like Posey is in his prime.

Are you really comparing 2002-ish payroll to today's?

Let's see what has happened in between -

2 world series titles, further confirmation that Pac Bell is one of the great MLB venues which in return filled the coffers, TV revenue deal with CSN and the overall development of China Basin as an ownership group..

Since 2010 have we really thought they've been anything but fair w/ their payroll??

I think they have been fair.  I wouldn't say they have done everything in their power to put the best players on the field though.

Take late last offseason for example.  We had a glaring hole in left field, and there were still good free agents available.  I believe the exact quote from management was that we were "tapped out" and wouldn't be making any more moves in free agency.  Well, IMO, that is a load of BS.  How after two WS titles in the last 3 years (and all the money that was flooding in due to that), were we tapped out?  Thats why we ended up with Andres Torres.  To me, that was a perfect example of our ownership being cheap.

But overall, I am with you Lazy.  They have been fair.  In fact, they have often times been far more than fair when it comes to spending money (Pagan, Scutaro, Huff, Affeldt, etc.)

I'd have to see who was still left and what they signed for. Tapped out could mean a couple of things - they may not have been high up on Player X and therefore his bidding price to come to SF would have over-extended them. It's not like FA is done in a vacuum it has impact on years to come.

My only issue is the "rewarding" the team does - Huff and Scutaro, for example. Scutaro to a lesser extent, but we'll see in 2 years.

At the end of the day, we're not the yankees and their not running a 501(c) so I understand they owners want to make some coin, too.

All the players that were given bad contracts were already on our team, and they all played like they needed the money in their contract years. Of course the last few years is a small sample size but from what it looks like it seems upper management is only willing to spend money on players that prove themselves while they're with us. They might be hesitant after how badly Rowand and Zito flamed out.

I dont disagree with any of this.  I think you are absolutely spot on with how management is willing to spend their money ( A- rewarding players who were already on our team and B- hesitant to make big(ger) signings in free agency because or Rowand and Zito).

Problem is, you cant continue to run your organization like this if you want to remain competitive.  We are overpaying our own free agents, and choosing to pass on other teams free agents strictly because of fear of them turning out like past signings.  That is not a recipe for success.  Now I am not advocating buying every free agent out there like the Dodgers are, but there needs to be a balance.

This offseason is going to be VERY interesting.  With the amount of money coming off the books, it will be very interesting to see how Sabean uses the money, if at all.  He better though.  This team is in need of some major changes.  And if he doesnt make a splash in free agency, I dont see how we will improve on this season.

I agree. This offseason sets us up for the near future and some long term attributes as well.

Thank God Zito won't get his innings quota to trigger another payday. Could you imagine?

I don't get the fascination with B. Pill laugh.gif
post #1611 of 9789
There's no"fascination" withh Pill. Dude has just done nothing but rake in the Minors, and we have never given the dude a chance. The fact that Belt gets every opportunity in the world and Pill gets none, only makes me root for him harder.

Lon Simmons says that his two favorite Giants are Tim Lincecum and Brett Pill. He also said that he hopes he gets traded to a team that will give him a chance to play.
