Official 2023 San Francisco Giants Off-Season Thread - Jung Hoo Lee signs with SF 6-years $113 Million

Did anyone hear Keith Law on 95.7? Talk about not sugar coating anything and being brutally honest.  I really didnt like hearing him say this, because I truly respect him as an analyst:

"Michael Morse is not a good player.  He is a disaster in left field."

I put no ounce of thought into statements like that.

I'd rather see him play for a couple months before judging. If his wrist is truly healthy, I can't see how he doesn't help us.

I hope you are right and he does help us. The reason why I actually do put stock into statements like that are because you never hear analysts make statements like that. I never hear them say "this guy simply isnt good" or things like that. They sugar coat everything. In fact, his delivery of the line made it even worse. And I think that Law is actually a knowledgeable baseball mind.

I hope you are right aNd he is wrong though.

Law was also the guy when Timmy was first drafted that said Lincecum's command issues would make him a relief pitcher so I'd say he's got a pretty good idea of what he's talking about.

I was never a fan of the Morse signing. He's on the other side of 30, he's a guy with semi power coming to AT&T so who knows. He says he's 100% healthy so thats a good sign.

So what are you guys realistic expectations from Michael Morse??

I actually like the Morse signing. I really do.

With Belt expected to hit 3rd, Posey and maybe Pence following him, I think that only helps Morse. The Giants pretty much had no offensive production from left field, and the slightest offense from Morse would be a huge boost. When healthy in Washington, Morse can hit it out as far as anyone, so if he's completely healthy from the wrist injury then I think there won't be a dip in his offensive production. With that being said, I can look at 18 to 22 bombs from Morse hitting 5th or 6th.

I prefer Posey hitting 3rd, but Belt has finally come along offensively so I'm content with Posey hitting clean up. So where is Pablo going to hit? We have Pence most likely at 5th, so does Morse bat in front of Pablo?

Morse at the bottom of the order is actually good, at least could be if Crawford can hit for average and not have a super long slump. What would you say our projected line-up / order is on avg for the season?

Any particular reason for having Pablo bat 3rd over Belt? I could definitely see Pablo hitting 3rd, but I think I'd prefer Belt there.
Yeah I disagree with this lineup.  I see:

Pagan

Scutaro

Belt

Posey

Pence
Pablo

Morse

Crawford

Pitcher

I was torn on the 5-6 holes, and ultimately decided on Pence before Pablo so we can utilize his speed more without Panda clogging up the bases for him.  I could see that switched.

Also, if Belt has prolonged struggles, I can see removing him from the 3 hole and dropping him to 6th, with the three P's sliding up a spot.  I hope Belt has really turned the corner, but I will have to see it to believe it.

I would much prefer this lineup, but this team for some reason has an infatuation with Panda. If he could finally develop into the 25+ homer guy everyone on the organization thinks he can be I'd be ecstatic, but I've been waiting for the last 4 years for that power to develop.

I really dont think that he needs to "finally develop into a 25+ homerun guy."  I think Pablo is right around a 25 homerun guy, provided he could stay healthy.

I mean:

2009: 25 homeruns

2010: 13 homeruns (clearly his worst season)

2011: 23 homeruns in only 117 games played

2012: 12 homeruns in only 108 games played

2013: 14 homeruns in 141 games played

In pretty much all of the last 3 seasons, Pablo was playing hurt/coming back from a significant injury that affects a swing.  I would safely say that Pablo is easily a 20+ homerun guy already, given what I just wrote out.  If he could stay healthy (yes, I know....big if) there is no reason he cuoldnt be a 25+ homerun guy.  Saying he needs to "develop" into that is wrong IMO.

Like you said him staying healthy is a big if, but even when he's stayed relatively healthy he's under achieved. 14 home runs in 141 games simply isn't good enough considering his power ability. I'll agree that saying he needs to develop was the wrong term, but he hasn't played good enough up to this point (other than the world series obviously). All things aside I certainly hope he can stay healthy and hit 25 or more homers. I feel like this has the potential to be the best Giants offense since at least the Bonds/Kent/Snow days.

Michael Morse shows off power in SF Giants workout (and Billy Beane nods affirmatively)

Michael Morse gave me a “what the hell?” look today when I told him he’d get a lot of Google hits if he typed in “Michael Morse three-way.”

He was relieved to learn that I was talking about the three-way trade before the 2013 season that ultimately got him from the Nationals to the Mariners.

Funny thing about that deal: The A’s were the middle men. They ended up with Mariners catcher John Jaso, but technically the Nats traded Morse to the A’s, who traded him to the Mariners.

Oakland GM Billy Beane was laughing about this the other day because Morse’s first act as a Mariner was to hit four home runs over three games in the season-opening series at the Coliseum. Morse hit nine home runs in Seattle’s first 30 games before he injured his wrist.

“He’s a strong individual,” Beane said. “We saw him healthy the first week and he destroyed us. He was part of our three-way. So technically we acquired him, and I thought, ‘This guy’s going to hit 40 homers and I could have had him.”

I guess in theory Beane could have kept him, but that would have ended the A’s days as multi-team traders.

Beane particularly remembers a three-run homer to right field, which is not easy for a right-handed hitter to do in Oakland. Today, we saw a little of that opposite-field pop when Morse hit one ball off the right-field fence and another over it, against Yusmeiro Petit, on the first day of pitchers throwing live batting practice to hitters at Scottsdale Stadium.

If Morse stays healthy, Giants fans might see some home runs into the right-field Arcade at AT&T Park, rare for right-handed hitters.

“He’s scary at the plate,” Beane said. “It’s hard to find right-handed power,”

Meanwhile, Morse in all seriousness asked if he really can be considered a former Athletic, even if for a few moments. He likes to own jerseys bearing his name for every team he was on and might ask Oakland to get him one in the green and gold.

I suggested that he should get a financial share because the A’s won the American League West last year. He replied, “Yeah, I’ll have to talk to the union about that.”

To me, Sandoval doesn't belong in the 3 hole. He simply doesn't stay healthy for a prolonged period of time to have consistent at-bats and that brings his power numbers down. My way of thinking is to have a big bopper in the 3 hole and while the Giants don't have that, I'm content with Belt hitting there hoping that the second half of last season is what's really in store for him.

dland's lineup is more of what I'd predict for Opening Day, but switching Morse and Pablo is probably the only tweak I'd make. I've lost a lot of faith in Sandoval, not sure why. I know he went through the weight loss again, but he's inconsistencies are too much to put up with. However, Pablo could have a huge year, being that it's a contract year.
