Official 2023 San Francisco Giants Off-Season Thread - Jung Hoo Lee signs with SF 6-years $113 Million

So I have been meaning to post this....and it may look a little different now than 2 weeks ago when I meant to bring this up.....

But there was someone who brought this up on 95.7 and I totally agree with it.  If the Giants want Pablo Sandoval to be on the Giants moving forward, they need to meet his contract demands.  Is he worth 5 years for $90M?  That is debatable.  But if the Giants think he is worth (hypothetically), say $14M, they would be wise to at least come close to meeting his contract demands.

Why?

Because almost EVERY large market team in the entire Major Leagues will be looking for a third baseman in the offseason.

Yankees

Red Sox

Dodgers

Angels

Phillies

And then there are other teams that have been making free agency splashes recently, that very well could jump in the mix like:

Mariners

White Sox

Then of course, there are sleeper teams that could either replace their third baseman or move players around to accommodate Pablo:

Diamondbacks

Brewers (Aramis has a mutual option)

If Pablo hits the open market, I think he will likely sign a contract that meets or exceeds the demand he made to the Giants.  I know it is easy to talk about this now that he is raking again, but this point was made weeks ago and I agree.  If the Giants want Pablo at ____ years for ____ million dollars, they need to be more realistic about how much they are willing to pay him.  He is going to get whatever he wants if he hits the free agent market.  We just need to decide if he is part of our plans or not.

There's ALWAYS another team willing to overpay for someone like a Panda. The guy's got two rings and has proven himself time and again, both with a bat and his glove. I don't think there's a lot of incentive for him to stay with the Giants especially if we can't match the offers of the big market teams.

Well that's exactly the point I was making.  If we want him as a Giant moving forward, we need to come close to offering what he wants.  Close enough that he would be willing to do it rather than test free agency.  If he actually becomes a free agent, I don't see how he wouldn't get MORE than the 5/$90M he originally asked us for.

Not only is he the best option but he is the only option. We have no one in the minors and the list of free agents pretty much consist of a bunch of 30+ over the hill 1/2 year a away from being full time DH types. The only way i could see us letting him walk is if they really feel Posey won't last at first and wanted to move him. Even then Hector as an everyday catcher... can't see it neither do I want to (and I'm a fan)

Just saw a stat that we have the 5th lowest batting average against the curveball this season (2.09) Wainwright will be throwing them early and often tonight.

This is officially a problem now. Between Cain, Hudson and Lincecum with the blister issue.

No Posey either :smh:

Not too worried about the Tims.

However, I'm concerned about Posey's back. It seems like something that could linger the whole season, and he hasn't been hitting well since he tweaked it.
