Give examples please

If you did have one how would you break out of that mentality?

Is it a way of thinking?

I'm trying to understand this concept?

Example 1: Graduates high school, prefectly capable of going to school or finding a full time job, sells dope anyway.

Example 2: Plays football, get scholarship to major program and D1 school, gets busted for selling weed.

I used to think that problems I had with people could only be resolved by fighting, glad I broke away from that way of thinking. When I was younger that was just the way it was.

This and what goldenchild said.

Hood rats and hood n____ lack a general plan and do not consider the future when making bad decisions

You don't have to be in the hood to have this mind frame... its just most common in the hood so that's what it's associated with.

Most times, men don't really stay with the hood mentality b/c they don't have the same leeway to make badk decisions as women.

Change your circle of friends. Try hanging out with people you know don't have that mentality.

Once you get a taste of that "Everything is all to the good" life, you'll realize how green/restricting the hood mentality really is.

Keeping your head on the swivel (never know who/what might creep)
Fighting at the drop of dime instead of talking
Looking up to folks you have no business ( dopemen, stick up kids, pimps etc.)
Flashing off ( jewelry, cars, clothes)

Its not something you can type out, Like someone said above its a vision- When I was a Store Manager for Finishline, I was transferred from Michigan to New Orleans...  Could always tell when a hit crew would roll up.. Dresses exactly the same as all the rest of my customers .. Looked the same. but acted that 1% dif to wear i knew they was going to try to get over..

Its Not always being "bout that life" ... But it is 99% of the time, time to be bout that life- Selling dope to a young buck you might givem a 5 for the 20, and vice versa for the OG's-

Like I said B4 its not all about kids throwing away they life, its basics-

Monks live in a monistary and thats all they know, They pray and preach whatever-

Hood is all we know, ..... All i can think of right now is that line from mitch on Paid in Full . "is the hood still gonna show me love"?

limiting your potential, for what at first sight seems like instant, easy gratification.

Ah, so all of this is limited to those in urban areas then, huh? Interesting.

IMO nothing separates a "hood mentality" as stated in this thread from any other sort of mentality.

People from the suburbs can lack direction and limit their potential

I think its a bit bigger than just "limiting ones potential", because those same people don't limit thier potential in the dope/rap game.

Doing unfavorable/illegal things to make ends meet

Willing to fight/grab a gun to yourself

Willing to get out on the block instead of in a school
