It probably goes without saying but the way they're setting up the OT characters as myths that the new characters find out to be true is perfect. The nostalgia/mystery/sense of time passing is overwhelming

would this movie have more of less hype if the prequels never existed? 

imo there would be less hype since as bad as they were, the prequels introduced an entire generation to starwars

Less. The prequels did help with relevance. But it also feels more epic to see Luke/Han/Leia again after three movies without them, which made it seem like we'd never get to see them again.

I was saying this to my friend earlier today. The prequels were blueprint for what not to do with a Star Wars movie... basically laid everything out about how to ruin the legacy. I'd be hard pressed to believe JJ and KK didn't sit down and see all this and did the opposite to make them great again.
