Did someone mention rebooting the prequels on here? I'd be all for that.
No.

At best tell different stories during that time or before that or after with Janus and co. And I'd only want those to be one off movies really.

Keep going forward though.

Greg Rucka’s Star Wars novel Before the Awakening is A) Quite good and B) Explains much about Finn’s stormtrooper training and social circle leading up to the movie.

In a nutshell:

Finn was trained in a squad of four boys: Him (FN-2187), Nines, Zero and Slip.
Nines and Zero have nicknames based on their alphanumerical designations (Zero’s is FN-2003, likely used by the ficcer mentioned above, Nines ended in 9s, etc.). Slip was called slip because he was a ****up.
Turns out, most troopers have nicknames
Why does FN-2187 not have a nickname? Because nobody really likes him. An older trooper tells him straight to his face: he’s an outsider. It just happens to some troopers.
Why is this extra tragic? Is it because Finn’s a ****** trooper? NO. He’s actually top of his little trooper class. He’s the ******* bomb, with a blaster, with tactics, with hand-to-hand weapons. Phasma’s got extremely high expectations for him. (what a ****** mary sue amirite)
So why is this actually extra tragic? What’s Phasma’s one problem with him? Finn cares too much. He cares about keeping his squad alive.
He cares about going back for his friends more than the mission objective SOUND FAMILIAR?
So Phasma tells him to stop coddling Slip or face consequences. He does.
And then: the skirmish on Jakku. A trooper dies and Finn loses his final shred of faith in the First Order. Who is that trooper? PROBABLY SLIP, IT REALLY SEEMS LIKE. Basically Finn’s brother, even if he never really fit in with his squad.

And then: the first thing Poe does is give him a nickname based on his alphanumerical designation JUST LIKE HIS TROOPER FAMILY, NINES AND ZERO AND SLIP, WHO NEVER LIKED HIM ENOUGH TO GIVE HIM ONE.

IN CONCLUSION the trooper who recognizes Finn on sight (and who has been meme-nicknamed TR-8R) is likely Zero or Nines.

Nice find.

I wasn't gonna read any of the novels any time soon.

This adds a lot of depth the movie didn't or couldn't get in there.

if finn is at the top of his class, how did he get washed by his average classmate?

First time wielding a lightsaber or because the writer deemed it so after another writer said he was the top of his class. Pick one.

also Top of the Class doesn't mean you'll actually great in the field.

Yeah, it felt like while Finn was capable enough to defend himself and run away he was shook as **** in the field so he hurried a lot of his attacks. Like he wanted most one on one battles to end very fast.

I know for a fact he was shook fighting Emo Kylo.

That's outstanding depth on Finn. Makes a ton of sense the bloody hand to his helmet and the effect on him.

all that Finn backstory is why i nitpick on that "i worked sanitation" line. Seems unecessary, out of place and was just for the lulz (setup for the "throw Phasma down the trash compactor" callback dialogue.

This is one of those things where it's cool to know but it doesn't mean anything to the average fan who doesn't read up on this stuff. I can see why people would be upset at the lack of backstory, you shouldn't need to do homework to understand movie characters

The average fan doesn't care about Finn's lack of backstory... you're given enough in the movie. He was stolen as a kid and raised as a trooper. He's like every other stormtrooper, except he rejected it and he defected. That's all the backstory you need.

they did a poor job of filling in the 30 year gap before the movie because they wanted everything to be a secret

shattered empire should have covered more ground or some of the novels before the movie should have covered what happened leading up to the movie

a first order trooper book with finn as the main character would have been cool as well as a rey book covering her first years on jakku

also who was that big guy that had the girl who ratted out han rey and finn? he looks like he might be a future character like a jabba the hut

-the girl who snitched on han...bounty hunter seductress? :nerd:

-that 'intergalactic scotsman' also snitched on han after they escaped in the falcon...it looked like he was to survive the monster attack on the barge...who was he exactly? :nerd:

random thought: if they ever do vader clones they should have a bootleg vader clone voiced by the chocolate rain guy

If they ever use hayden again it should only be for if snoke aka plagueis actually did create anakin and created a clone of him incase kylo fails

Dont want to see him as a force ghost.

[emoji]128161[/emoji][emoji]128173[/emoji] Bright idea! If that dude didn't flip his 15 seconds into voiceover work, then he really missed an opportunity to live on risiduals forever. Chris Rock said he makes more money off of that Zebra than anything he's ever done.
