It's official:

Minnesota has fired general manager David Kahn, league source tells Y! Sports.

He's on the radio right now if you want to see what a guy-who-was-fired-5-minutes-ago has to say:

@talkhoops Kahn on KFAN: http://www.iheart.com/live/1209/?autoplay=true … One last chance for some spotlight.

And AP Jon Kraw reported this:

The new deal for Flip Saunders should be made official by Friday.

Kahn just said that the team he's assembled over the last 2 years "is the most talented in team history".

Mmmm great. Flip. Maybe he can get what he wants - team owner, president, GM, and head coach eyes.gif What a joke this franchise is

And Kahn knows he's essentially a cap and contracts guy anyway, Adelman has close to final say on roster matters. If Kahn thinks he has the handle on the draft portion though then he might as well not bring that up.

Quote:
Only two of the 10 draft picks the Timberwolves made in (Kahn's) four years -- Rubio and 2011 No. 2 overall pick Derrick Williams -- are on the roster.

I've stuck up for Kahn during his time here but these are all players in the NBA the Timberwolves passed during the draft on under David Kahn:

Stephen Curry, Brandon Jennings, Gerald Henderson, Jrue Holiday, Ty Lawson, Jeff Teague, DeJaun Blair, Marcus Thornton, Danny Green, Chase Budinger, DeMarcus Cousins, Greg Monroe, Al-Farouq Aminu, Paul George, Larry Sanders, Eric Bledsoe, Avery Bradley, Jordan Crawford, Greivis Vásquez, Lance Stephenson, Kenneth Faried.

It actually makes me sick. Some are all stars, some are pretty good. Throwing out Budinger (we signed him), all would be wanted here.

Don't know if anyone caught it, but Flip Saunders was on a local Minnesota station (KFAN sports radio) today and had a few interesting things to say!

-When Barreiro asked him pointedly, "Is Nikola Pekovic going to be on this team next year?", Flip responded with, "He's on the team right now." Awkward pause after that statement as well. mean.gif
-He basically confirmed without straight up saying it that Chase Budinger will be on the team next year.
-Said he would be very surprised if both Adelman or Kirilenko weren't back next year.
-Sounds like he is going to try to convert Derrick Williams to the three spot. Said he came in at 260 last year, and wants him to get down to 240-245.
-Made a point of saying "Derrick Williams was a better rebounder than LeBron and Nene during the regular season. He also was in the Top 40 of spot-up 3 point shooting".

Don't know how far I want to look into that comment about Pek. I think he's an important piece to building a winner. Having a center like him in today's NBA can go a long way.

I'm coming more and more around on Saunders....but I'm still holding my ground. In any case (as usual with this franchise) it's good to get a fresh set of eyes. Flip's obviously been in the league long enough to have his opinions on what can work. I will be interested though to see how this tag team works....where Adelman had huge say in all matters previously and now apparently it's Flip's voice as final.

Regardless, I do not see Adelman being here much longer than another year (unless for some reason we became a top team in the West) and when that happens everyone on earth is going to look right at Flip and wait for him to name himself the coach. This cannot happen with this team, and I can totally see it happening because, well, that's what we do here. We recycle everything. While continuing to stay in last place.

I'm excited for next season to start already and I think Rubio is ready to beast.

I'm numb. I'm holding myself to having zero expectations so that I'm not letdown again. Just get this team back to playoffs. We'll start there.

If Love and Rubio can play over 75 games... I consider it a great season. Because the results will come from that.

Lets just win the lottery. laugh.gif Flip needs to "Joe Smith" Adam Silver and Benedict Stern.

i take it with kahn gone it takes the chances of love ever getting traded to zero now?

Well, I wouldn't say 0, but much lower. Flip needs to get Love back in good spirits with the entire organization, assure him that nothing like the 4 year or 5 year debacle will happen again, and that all the faults from the past won't resonate with the current management group.
Love can basically force the T'Wolves' hands this upcoming season given that he only has a year left on his contract after 2014.

The Wolves own 17 of 1,000 possible number combinations. That means they have an 81.3% chance of staying put with the 9th overall pick, a 12.2% chance of picking 10th and a 6.1% chance of getting one of the top 3 picks that breaks down this way: 1.7% chance of #1, 2.0% chance of #2, and a 2.4% chance of #3. The Wolves are sending as their representative two-time All Star Kevin Love.

The Wolves also own Memphis' first round pick (26th) and two second round picks (51st and 59th)

Anyone have any thoughts on who you want the Wolves to draft with their first pick? I've been big on Oladip for awhile now, but assuming their draft position doesn't move up, then he's probably going before they pick.

Man I have no clue honestly. Such a crapshoot and such young players now that the chances of us landing someone making a big impact on this team next year is real small. Personally at that spot (8th or so), when you are not picking #1, I'd like them to just acquire someone with a very high skill set of something specific even if he's bad at other things. If that's a major shooter (but he's slow), or a major shotblocker (but he can't shoot) or a major defender......just give me someone who provides something specific of value. I've about had enough of high-lotto athletic guys who don't really do anything specifically well and can easily be eventually replaced by a cheaper vet.

Our last eight years of first round U.S. college players were mainly "athletic" guys on brand-name schools: Rashad McCants, Randy Foye, Corey Brewer, Kevin Love, Jonny Flynn, Wayne Ellington, Wes Johnson, Lazar Hayward, Derrick Williams. Most of those gave us pretty good "wow" factor on draft night for us as fans...then aside from Love all ended up being semi to major busts and DWill has a good chance of being one as well relative to his draft positioning. You have to completely revamp your philosophy as an organization because obviously nothing has worked as far as your scouting. Now Flip Saunders, who knows what his plan is. He isn't exactly a master-evaluator either although I do feel better about him there instead of Kahn. I could easily see a trade go down before draft night to acquire a vet for Adelman.

This franchise though has just been absolutely killed by the lottery system and that's the main reason we sit where we do now. The Wolves never have had the luxury of picking first and making themselves look smart, they are always in the 3-10 range where it's the Wild West. Meanwhile Orlando very possibly could land their FOURTH number 1 pick tonight since their inception and they came in to the league the same year as the Wolves. mean.gif

I think we need a good big defender don't know if Stiesma is the guy and my guess Dwill name will be involved with trade talk.

If we move down I say trade it. I think there are some good quality guys at the wings this off-season. I don't think a lot of money will be spent on FA's. Most will get sign to a year or two just because of next years draft and FA class.

Needs for this team.

A good starting 2 guard that can score and defend.
Move Luke and get bigger in the back court.
Find that big that can back up Pek and be a 3rd big option after Dwill and D.C.

Well, just to get me even more annoyed I did some research today. I stopped at the year 2003.

Here are the 12 NBA teams that have been in the lottery the most since 2003 (11 lotteries). These were for their own pick or one that was coming to them because of a previous trade.

Minnesota - 9
Golden State - 9
Toronto - 9
Charlotte - 8
Portland - 8
Milwaukee - 8
LA Clippers - 8
Cleveland - 7
New York - 7
New Orleans - 7
Utah - 7
Washington - 7

Of those teams above here are the times they moved up on lottery night:

3 out of 8 - LA Clippers
2 out of 8 - Portland
2 out of 7 - Cleveland
2 out of 7 - Washington
1 out of 9 - Toronto
1 out of 8 - Milwaukee
1 out of 7 - New Orleans
1 out of 7 - Utah
0 out of 7 - New York
0 out of 8 - Charlotte
0 out of 9 - Golden State
0 out of 9 - Minnesota

Here are the times they moved down on lottery night:

4 out of 9 - Minnesota
4 out of 8 - Charlotte
4 out of 7 - Washington
2 out of 9 - Toronto
2 out of 8 - LA Clippers
2 out of 7 - Cleveland
2 out of 7 - New Orleans
1 out of 9 - Golden State
1 out of 8 - Milwaukee
1 out of 8 - Portland
1 out of 7 - New York
1 out of 7 - Utah

This would obviously look even worse if one continued researching back to 1989

I like Stiemsma as a backup center, and particularly think he complements the offensive-minded Pekovic with his defense well.

It's really a mystery what Flip Saunders will do with this draft now... we got the #9 and #26. Feels like every year we always have two to play with, and somehow **** it up EVERY. TIME. laugh.gifmean.gifmean.gif

I'm definitely on board with moving Luke Ridnour though. I don't think Derrick Williams is going to be moved unfortunately. His stock will never be higher, move him now! Of course the new regime has to see and make sure themselves that he can't play the 3, even thought he previous shoddy regime already expended a lot of resources into that.
