Patrice O'Neal Appreciation Thread vol. one year

That's what mainstream Hollywood is though. It's what comics like Kevin Hart and Amy Schumer became. And you see the rules Kev has to abide by. Chappelle dipped his toes into that world and wanted no part of it.
Patrice was never going to be that. He would've kept getting those 25th Hour / The Office roles at best and he'd have a popular podcast (of his own). Dude had Comedy Central, Showtime, HBO specials like 20 years ago when a special meant something. He was on top of the standup game already. Y'all making it seem like he was on a trajectory to star in big budget movies alongside Zack Galifinakis or something.
I get that's what mainstream hollywood is . You said he didn't want the spotlight (a.ka. fame)and was good where he was at, but when he was alive he was pitching tv shows, trying to get a radio show, and he even made a joke after Elephant In The Room came out saying he was waiting for fame to call. Fame comes with success in show business which he was in. If he were alive and did a Netflix special and it was trending like he or anyone would want their work to be, then wouldn't that make him famous? And by "the world becoming more accommodating" I didn't mean with just movies. Tons of ways to produce content with less restrictions now. Podcasts being one of them. He could have had a podcast as big or bigger than JRE or Bill Burr's podcast.
You're making it sound like he wasn't aiming to be more successful than he was.

I became a huge fan of Patrice from watching Tough Crowd. I even attended a taping of Tough Crowd back then but he wasn’t part of the panel that day (Jim Norton and Keith Robinson were on the panel). That was a dope show that couldn’t be replicated today. I imagine Rogan sees himself and his friends as a continuation of that but they’re not nearly as funny as those dudes. Patrice and Greg Giraldo’s deaths were huge losses in comedy.
