Exclusive: Obama authorizes secret U.S. support for Syrian rebels

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama has signed a secret order authorizing U.S. support for rebels seeking to depose Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his government, U.S. sources familiar with the matter said.

Obama's order, approved earlier this year and known as an intelligence "finding," broadly permits the CIA and other U.S. agencies to provide support that could help the rebels oust Assad.

US declaring Syrian rebel group as terrorist body

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration is declaring a Syrian rebel group with alleged ties to al-Qaida as a terrorist organization. It's an effort to blunt the influence of extremists as the U.S. steps up cooperation with the Syrian opposition.

The State Department's action blocks Jabhat al-Nusra's assets in the U.S. and bars Americans from doing business with the group.

The move hasn't been announced officially but was included in the Federal Register on Monday. The department said the group was part of al-Qaida in Iraq.

Jabhat al-Nusra has claimed responsibility for suicide bombings on Syrian government targets, raising fears of growing Islamic extremism among the opposition.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is traveling to North Africa this week to try to bolster moderates hoping to end Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime.

Sources: U.S. helping underwrite Syrian rebel training on securing chemical weapons
By Elise Labott

The United States and some European allies are using defense contractors to train Syrian rebels on how to secure chemical weapons stockpiles in Syria, a senior U.S. official and several senior diplomats told CNN Sunday.

The training, which is taking place in Jordan and Turkey, involves how to monitor and secure stockpiles and handle weapons sites and materials, according to the sources. Some of the contractors are on the ground in Syria working with the rebels to monitor some of the sites, according to one of the officials.

The nationality of the trainers was not disclosed, though the officials cautioned against assuming all are American.

In Syria conflict, U.S. struggles to fill intelligence gaps

“But we’ve got to figure out who is over there first, and we don’t really know that,” said a U.S. official who expressed concern over persistent gaps and who, like others interviewed, spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was discussing intelligence matters. “It’s not like this is a new war. It’s been going on for 16 months.”

These people don't even know who they are aiding.

It said the administration is calling A rebel group terrorists. This doesn't mean that they're labeling the whole opposition terrorists.

jesus christ... i'm beginning think this might be another event like the domino theory to stop communism. How america fought with korea and vietnam. those ended up being a lost cause.

Americans now have a justification to intervene on the basis to preserve democracy.

Next thing you know. we will be fighting syria and fighting an regime that seen as a terrorist group.

What the freak are our soldiers losing their lives for? bring them home honestly

Despicable, but no surprises here. The US government's allegiance is aligned solely with their own corporate, political, and financial interests (and Israel's). They couldn't care less about preserving or creating new democracies, and never have. Just look at all the US sponsored military coups that have taken place just because the US did not support an elected leader (Haiti, Chile, Phillipines, Iran, etc., etc.). The tune changes with every shift of the geopolitical landscape, regardless of whatever was established previously. As far as Syria and the Middle East are concerned: it's not radical Islam that worries the US, it's independence.

This sort of stuff has been going on for as long as the US has had foreign interests. Which, needless to say, is a really long time.

A joke. Worry about home first. This place is friggin falling apart and the gov't is worried about everything and anything overseas.

Oddly, this is what happens when the US takes care of home first.

The destabilization of other countries is married to US prosperity.

You people are hilarious. I guess this group is wearing name tags?
Would you like them to? In a perfect world, you would be able to simply label everyone. But this is a complex world where we can't simply divide people into Democrats & Republicans, Free & Slave, 1st world & 3rd world, etc. There are many shades of gray and often people from diametrically opposed positions can fight for the same things for very different reasons. You as someone who pays close attention to politics should know this better than most.

What goes on overseas directly affects what goes on at home. The most glaring example is 9/11.

What goes on in the ME is most certainly our business.

the US and the CIA have been doing this forever...this is nothing new, from the contras, the taliban back in the day, and who knows who else, hell i wouldnt be surprised if the CIA were the ones providing arms to the cartels in mexico...yeah i said it..

So why even get involved at all? Is it ok that this government has been aiding these people for months, and now all of a sudden they realized that "Oh, this single group here is a 'terrorist' organization" even though over 83 have signed a petition expressing solidarity to al-Qaida? Give me a break.

I see you know nothing about the Taliban. Oh and it's not the CIA giving arms to the cartel, just the Dept of Justice.
